Jesse I. Straus, New York merchant, was apointed United States Ambassador to France, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Straus, who has been affiliated with Macy’s New York department store for many years, is the first Jew to hold this position. Jews have held ambassadorships to many smaller countries, but never before to a world power, such as France. In the recent presidential election, Mr. Straus was once of President Roosevelt’s most staunch supporters.
