At the Howard association headquarters great activity prevails, and nurses are being sent to Pans, Mason's, Grand Junction, German town and Lagrange, Tenn., and Hernando, Miss. Anidng the deaths reported are Ed Terrell, Daisy Shepperd, George Butler and James Gatty, who was taken ill at Mound City, Arkansas, five miles np the river. L. J. Levin, a volunteer from Chicago, fell senseless at the Peabody hotel entrance at noon to-day. His condition is considered extremely critical. Nurses here furnished this morning Mrs. M. W. Iledford, Mrs,. A. J. Roach, M. C. Pearce and Mrs. Julia Morrow, who are among the cases reported. The Rev. Africa Bailey, a noted colored divine, died last night Augustus Sadler is reported in a critical condition. Dr. E. T. Easley, volunteer physician from Little Rock, Ark., died this morning at the city
hospital. A child of the Rev. S. C. Arnold, a local preacher of the M. E. church, died this morniDg, being the last of a family of seven, who have fallen victims to the plague. Twenty-two deaths have occurred since last evening at 6 o'clock. Twenty eight deaths from yellow fever have occurred during the past 24 hours ending at 6 o'clock to-night. Dr. 11. W. Mitchell, medical director of the Howard association, to-day received the following telegram from John M. Wood worth, surveyor general at Washington city: "Will you accept aopointment on the yellow fever commission to serve at once with Bern is, of New Orleans, and Cochrane, of Mobile; compensation, foOO per month and traveling expenses? Please reply immediately, as 1 must decide this afternoon." The following was the response sent: "Thanks for the honor. Duty to a suffering people binds me here." Since noon R. B. Clarke, treasurer of the city relief committee, and John B. Taylor and H. 8. King, two prominent maso ns; Ous Sutton, foreman lioltz Bros., undertakers, and Louis CzapskI, general bookkeeper of the Union and Planters' bank, have died. John Condon was taken down this afternoon. Dr. H. Suave, of Hot Springs, has been detailed for duty at the city hospital. A physician bas been telegraphed for to attend Louis Bond, ill with lever at Brownsville,- Tenn. Twenty-two physicians of the Howards' medical corps report 142 new cases. Patsey JIaley, a -prominent ward politician, was taken down to-day with the fever at Camp Wright, eight miles distant from the city. AT KEW ORLEANS. New Orlkans, Sept. 30 Deaths, 35; cases - reported, 100, of which 63 are dated since the 27 th; total cases, 0,385; deaths, 8,345. William Fairchild, telegraph operator at Tanjipabon, died of yellow fever last night. C. N. Harvey, of Brook Haven, who took Faircliild'a place at the key a few days ago, is now down with the fever. The weather is pleasant Brother Solomon Moser, I. O. O. B. B.. who has been sick ten days, is out again. His family of seven persons have all had yellow fever and are now convalescing. The Orleans central relief committee met at the custom bouse at 11 o'clock, a large number of gentlemen and ladies of various
charitable associations being present. The report of the committee regarding the distribution of rations from the government was read and adopted. A preamble and resolutions were adopted, setting forth that destitution and suffering are constantly increasing; that the issue of rations had been discontinued by the secretary of war because the impresiion prevailed that sufficient funds are in the bands of the charitable associations to supply the wants of the people; that a committee of five call upon the Howard association, asking them to supply the funds necessary for the continuance o'f this committee; that filling in this a fioal appeal be made to the secretary of war for ra'rons. that failing in this the committee is authorized to appeal to the public at large to aid it. From noon to 6 p. m. 22 deatba were reported and 125 cases, of which 81 dated since September 27. The mortuary report for the week ending at 6 p. m. Sundar shows 400 deaths; 43G whites and 51 colon d. Yellow fever 326; 19 colored. Of the interments for the week 243 were children under 10 years of age. For the week 39 were buried from the chanty hospital; 16 from other public Institutions, and 22 on coroner's certificates. Dr. O. E. Kricke (German) has arrived from Harrisburg, Pa., sent here by the order of Haraguri to cure the yellow fever with lierbi. P-rties from the coast watering places ar- ' rive in large numbers. One family returned Sunday, and three of them were taken down the sime nigbt with the fever. A sub-comroifee of the Orleans central relief commities waited on the Howard association and appealed for means to enable the committee tocootinue the itsue of rations. The superintendent states that in many places in the infected districts the people are under the impression the spread of yellow fever has been due to the mails, and they look n con postal clerks and route agents as enemies of mankind. In some instances agents have been taken from trains by the quarantine officer?, and left in the woods.
