The Venerable Victor's Latest LitcrarjLtbor. From a literary point of view, say3 a Paris correspondent, the second volume of "The History of a Crime" is perhaps a trifle inferior to the first. The author is almost embarrassed by the mess cf Information he has had to press into it, and, being obliged to Clin dense, has, maybe, sacrificed something of the graphic force of his description. To tell such a tale of horror completely ten volumes would not be too many, and we have here but two. Yet for that very reason '"The History of a Crime" is ia some respects an invaluable record. Victor Hugo has called it "The Evidence of an Eye Witness," and it has the terrible authority of a sworn indictment. A crime so foul as Louis Napoleon's needs no comment. The naked truth is more awful than any elaborate accusation, and far more fitted to inspire the reader with the author's loathing hate of the criminal. Even after 25 years the villainy 01 the coup d'etat conies before us fresh and ts black as pitch. How Victor Hugo managed to accumulate the wonderful quantity of fact3 he records is a mystery to me. He seems to have known every actor in the tragedy. Each is awarded his meed of praise or censure much censure and little praise short, eloquent, generally just, rarely exaggerated. There are three parts to this second volume: "The Massacre," "The Victory," and "The Fall." In the first we find portraits of some of the most prominent accomplices of the arch traitor, drawn by a master hand. A handsome addition to the. historical chamber of horrors! Carljle on the Lord's Prayer. Thomas Carlyle. though an iconoclast, ia as reverent a man as lives. In a letter written in 1SG9 to the late Mr. Erskine he says: "I was agreeably surprised by the sight of your handwriting again, so kind, so welcome! The letters are as firm ad honestly distinct as ever the mind, too, in spite of its frail environments, as clear, plump up, calmly expectant as in the best days; right eo: so be it with us all till we quit this dim sojourn, now grown so lonely to us, and our change come. 'Our Father which art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy will be done.' What else can we say? The other night, in my sleepless tossings about, which were growing more and more miserable, these words, that brief and grand prayer, came etrangely into my mind, with an altogether new emphasis as if written and shining for me in mild, pure splendor on the black bosom of night there, when I, as it were, read them word by word with a sudden check tc my imperfect wanderings, with a sudden softness of composure which was much unexpected. Not for thirty or forty years had I once formally repeated that riraver; nay, I never felt before howintensey the voice of man's soul it is; the inmost aspiration of all that is high and pious in poor human nature; right worthy to be recommended with an 'After this manner pray ye.' " Spectator: "Gainsborough or Millais would select some delicate or characteristic type of face, attend carefully to the disposition of hair, whether it be in a net or flowing curls, faint the purpis dress and golden bracelet n all importance "e do not say undue importance notice with the instinct of ana ideal habit, maker the sit' of the drapery, 8D0WU3 how an ormolu table or much chased secretaire can be painted without being vulgar, and throw intense energy into the grace of the pose and expression, so as to let us know at once that the young lady is ft member of social humanity." Ir. Prlcea Special Flayorlnar Extract! . Vanilla, lemon and all extract! used m flavoring ice cream, jellies, cakes, etc, are acknowledged by the best housekeepers ia the land to be the finest flavors madu.
