KEFLEX OF THE INDIANA PRESS. ALLEN COCSTY. The Fort Wayre Gazttte states that a jcucg wciadu -who resided in Ohio, and wiiwe fond and doting parents bave done everything that wealth coald to afford her i;i the advantages ot an education, was seduced while atlendini? a eeminary, and was induced bv her soducer to come toour city. The Ledger sajs that aboat lour miles Jrorii New Albany the lightning struck and shattered ;welvo telegraph poles. "ear whra. the fia3h struck a lady was stunned, -atiTaTsoy knocked Insensible. James M. Hester, the son ot Mrs. J. A. Robinson, eight years of age, was drowned Fridav afternoon. While attempting to jump "from a barje he fell in and the Ohio swallowed him. JOENSOM COOSTY. The E'liclmrg Courier has a level head sura. It says: W-3 rtrd the Sentinel by ail odds the very best newspaper in the si ate. The Courier learns that the Christian -Cburcb, near the loll Rate, on the direct road to Fraoklic, and about four miles from Kdinburjr. was entered on Saturday night last and robbed of a fine Bible which cost 15, and a portion of the communion service. And also another church our miles beyond, on the same rod, was broken iDto and robbed of a Bible and a lot ot school boons. Both deeds were likely done by the same party. LA PORTE COUISTT. The Michigan City enterprise thinks the L., N.A.AC, railroad will keep pegsiog away at their sand ridge until the sand dunes are leveled clean thro' to the lake, glviEg it a magnificent lake and -river frontage and pning up a splendid view of the city lakeward aud of the lake cityward. On comple tiou ot the breakwater, this and the I., P. it C. roads will Lave, in winter, a smooth fiity are water held tor their ice crop. MIAMI COUNTY. Peru has a manufactory of bagging, which will use all the ihr' fiber which can be had. If farmers would learn how to take proper care ot the flaw straw the profits ot that crop would be largely incroasad. Such a factory as that at Paru ii th kind ot i ndustry that tiaserves encouragement. PERRY COUNTY. The Caanelton Eaquirer gives an episode of the late flood that is worth reading. It re.tlly looked pretty equally for the worshippers: The scene that took place at Oil Creek Chapel can not be properly described. There being at the time a congrestian gathered lor the purpose of listening to a funeral dweouT39 by the Rev. John Collins, consequently the number was lareer than otherwise would have been. The text had jsc-irccly been announced when the rain commenced, and as the church house Is situated on an island and on low ground, before the discourse was fairly prefaced the cbanceaof ecaie for the time cad passed, but none supposed that any serious trouble was at hand, but in a few moments hordes that were tied on low lauds were mid sides. The seriEoa was prematurely and informally closed, uin started for the relief ot tbeir horses ani to take care ol their wagons, the water rising at the rt.te of six inches per minute. The most serious case was that of Mr. John C. Eis ry, whoso hordes and wagon stood on very low groucd and before he could hitch his horses to the wagon he was waist deep in water, his vagon almost ready to move off. There being a high spot in front cf the church door, many thought to save their horses acd wagons there, while oth era. and perbsps the wiser, thought best to uwiui across the south branch of the creek and take refug? in Mr. Walker's field. The women and children being left to take their chances in the house, which is three fefct above the level ot the ground, in ten minutes those that were holdisg horses in thj church yard were standing in from thirty inches to taiee faet of water, and the drifting logs passing and jimxning t horses till the poor animals Had a!mot-t become iurious, and some seemed determined to risk their chances in the stronger current by swimming. Those who had gone Into the field gradually retreated before the advancing water until they wsre almost a quarter ol a mile from tha church. The water was getting on the aor whn the rain ceased, and in a littl-i while bOise of the most venturesome ciosstd out of the iail made by water. Alter a c julinement of atout four hours all were able fo escape and no lives lost, but all seriously irizhteced. SULLIVAN COUNTY. . The Union say: The contract for building the road from this place to Switz City, on the I. A V. roiid, has been let to a reap nsible firm, who are able to build the road. The papers hf.ve been signed by the parties and put upon record. SWITZERLAND COUNTY. At Vevay a little girl was found last week abandoned ty parties who Beena to have stolen th9 chili. She gave as her name, Maggie Flan eery, and said that her father's name was Martin Flannery, who lived near the foundry cn Front street .in Newport.Ky., and that sh) had a step mother and did not live with her fither but with a man namad Lew Barbar, and that she was nine rears ol age. Uer lather was sent for and said she hd been lost for over two weeks. "There is some mystery about the matter. fPEXCBR COUNTY. The Rocknort Democrat, giving an ac count of the late flood, says: Reports from the vicinitv of Pigeon bottoms, inform U3 that the seen 3 in that locality Monday and Tuesday beggar description. The lands bdiug very low, were soon inundated, houses and cabins near the creek was almost bud merged, and the wildest c jnsternttbn prevailed. Reports aay many people were taken from their houses on rafts, wolle others escaped a best they could. A man and his wifa are missing, and it is generally believed thai they were lost amia tae maa water?, in attempting to escape to the high land?. The fences along the creek and tor -quite a distance around were torn down, and in some puces swept away. VANDERBURGH COUNTY. A little bile of clothes on the bank of P.gf on Creek told the story ot Willie Burns who went in to name ana to uie. Evansvillo is in a stew for a city school superintendent to succeed Prof. Gow, lately resigned. The Courier Ditches in for its can id ate as thouffh it were a civil office to be decided by i. popular election. . VIOO COUNTY. Dr. John R. Cunningham, who has lived inTerre Hinte forty years, was burled on Sunday last. The Journal aays: Dr. Cun ülEsham was a rplendid represontatiye cf

KO NEWS CONJECTURES AND SURMISES THE SEARCH FOR THE BODIES VIEWS OF PROF. KINO BELIEF OF THE SIGNAL SERV1CK PEOPLE. The fate of Donaldson and Grimwood still absorb the attention of Chicago. In the absence of any definite news, the following Irons the Chicago Tribune of yesterday, will be of interest: Moment by moment, minutes lengthen Into hours, hours into days, and the days ore hurrying rapidly onward to complete the week, and yet no tidings are heard from the missing balloonist. Where they are, dead or alive, Is a matter of the merest conjecture. It can not be said that they are dead until some definite information to that effect is made known. There have been so many hair breadth escapes and withal so many fatal accident from balloon ascensions that one hardly knows which side of the case looks most probable. When one reads such escapes as that made by Mr. Haddock and Prof. Da la Mountain, where the aeronaut lacatd in an immense lorest in Canada, and were not heard from for two week?, it seems hard to refu-e Messrs. Donaldson and Grimwood the same chances and hopes of survival that Messrs. Haddock and De la Mountain proved possible, and even probable, under conditions ot the atmosphere not at all dissimilar to those of the latal night, if such it may be called. They were supposed to have been provided with inflated life-preserving vests, and if they were dropped into the lake from no great altitude they might have survived the storm. Possibilities in this direction seetred stretched the farthest pgilble limit by the recovery of a boy who had floated for fiity hours in the lake supported by a mere board, an account ot which was published in yesterday's Tribune. Here again it may be found impossible by many to give tbe balloonists up for lost, rbeu such a miraculous occurrence trans pires under precisely the same cirenmmancfg, the fierce squall included. The aeronauts, it provided with these vests, were infinitely more safe in tha water thau was this unfortunate boy ou Lis plank. But THE CHANCES for any such survival are infinitely small, and the chances that they are deep in Lake Michigan are as infinitely greater in proportion. The balloon carried 900 pounds of sand, an amount eufllciect to give the aeroPint a large control of his balloon, so far as altitude was concerned. The barometer wa excrediDtrly low shortly after the time that the balloon started from the earth, lower, iu ftct, than it has been lor a long lime in this city, a is instanced by the United States signal office returns. Thi? indicated an unusually heavy atmosphere, under which circumstances the balloon would have risen proportionately h gher than if the attuo.1-l.er0 was clear. It has been stated that under these circumstances the balloon would have gathertd hundreds ot pounds of moisture added to its weight so materially as to Sbriously impede it. liut previous to the occasion the billoonhad re.-ted .'or nearly sixty hours in tbe open air, brcides making one trip. During tJv.a tiui9 it would and must havo gathered about as much moist ure as it was possible to carry. About the only additional that couldsettle uiK-n it was that wtlch wonld gather on the outer surface already heavily moif-tened ou its inuer tide. In ihe event of a rain it might have gathered considerable weigh r, but certainly not enough to overcome tbe amount of eand it carried, which could be thrown out et pleasure. Besides all these advantages there remained the valve-rope, bv pulling which a su tlicient amount ot gas could have been liberated to enable the balloon to reach the earth in a very short time. This last woold afford Donaldsou very little consolation, however, as his sole object must have been to get above the storm, if he were alive when bat approached. If the balloon was can got n tne storm, an nope must end lor tbe re covery of the occupants. Though the bal loon might have withstood the cale, it was a most attraotivo object for the lightning to strike in tbe fierce eclectric battle of teat night. II such is the late of the af ronauts, it i v?.in to hope lor tho recovery even of their bodies. They would never know what had befallen them, and no cne ele could tver find out. Their prolonged absence had made sure but two facts one is A DIM POSSIBILITY OF LIFE, and the other a horrible death, with naught to toll the passing souls save tho wild, restes3 waves of Lake ML-higm. Itisnefdless to refer to the excitement that pre vailed in ibis city and in other places da rng the last few days. There is not a family who does not feel almost as if it were the peril of one of their own number. Their sympathies are all aroused, and every man, woman and cmid is on tue lookout for something concerning the balloon. For young Mr. Grimwood, the sadness is striking. A morn ing paper yesterday stated that his parents were in the city. The facts are that tbe young man's mother is in so exceedingly feeble healtn that tbe has not yet been ap prised of the loss ol her favorite eon. Tn family are at their home in Indiana, and a sadder or more mournful family it would be indeed hard to nnd. in connection with the report of Cant. Qaavle, ol the Presto, having seen a body off Grand Uaven, It Is necessary to refer back to tbe suicide of D. K. Albright, off the steamer Muskegon, when 20 miles off Grand Haven, on the morning of tbe 4ch of July. He was a large, fleshy man, and it was just about time for his body to come to the surlace.and bis it possibly is. .besides the reward ol 1500 offered by Barnum's manager, Mr. Coup, for the recovery of either of the bod les, outside parties have augmented tbe sum considerably. The proprietors of tbe Kvenirg Journal, who have taken an unusual In terest in the matter on account of their mis sing employe, yesterday received the fol lowing from Mr. KINO, THE AERONAUT: Cleveland. O., J nly 19, 1875. To the Chi cago Evening Journal: If your citizens are raising funds, to Institute search for Prof. Donaldson and bis companion, put me down for $100 and draw on me at sight. Samuel A. Kino, Aeronaut. The Journal has added 100 to this amount Mr. King also telegraphed the same paper as follows: It is my opinion that Donaldson and Grimwood have reached tbe woods of Mich igan, on the lake shore, and that they will follow the coast in tbeir efforts to extricate themselves. Send a tux to cruise along tbe shore, as it may be the means of saving them from starvation. Spare no ineans to save tbe lives ot the men, and believe nothing of the stories told of intentional absence for the purpose of creating a sensation. Samuel A. Kxsa, Aeronaut. ' The Journal also applied for a tug to go out

and search for the bodies, and received in reply the following from Capf. Priadiville: 1 jiitvo spnkeu to the superintendent, Mr. Hr;r.on, and he thinks it would be entirely e;e4 to tena a tue to bunt up tne boalts on the lake, for she might look around lor a month or more without being able to dis cover them. It is merely by accident that boats in passing discover anything of that kin-j, lor tbey show but lor a very short dis tance. Ii he thought there was a chance in a thousand of discovering them, he would willingly send a boat out. Very respectfully, M. Prisdivillk. Later the Evening Journal applied to Ad miral Cox, and it is exceedingly probable that the large tug L. B. Johnson will be sent out; to skirt along the shore. If neither ot the bodies are found, there may be s"me h')po of recovering ih3 remains ol the balloon. Unless it was loaded down with sand b4g.4 it would project out of the water enough to carry it slowly before the wind. Tne greai qu6ry regarding the fate ol the balloonisds " still eugrosaees th' Chicago public, and the absence cf determined f3cts seems to render the anxiety still greater. A visit to the cilice of the United States Signal Service Uice yestfrday afternoon resulted in the obtaining of some facta not hitherto published. Maj. KaufTman stated thit the wind on Friday morning at thirty minutes alter 12 o'clocK, when the gale sprang up, was blowing at tbe rate of THIRTY-TWO MILES AN HOUR. The probabilities for the twenty-four hours, beginning at 1 o'CiOck Thursday morning, showed: 'For the lake region, a falling barometer, southeast to southwest winds, warm and increasingly cloudy weather, and rain areas." Major Kauffjaan took an observation just before the storm began, and also tested the velocity of tbe wind when gjle began. In answer to inquiries, he stated that the wind often blew on Mt. Washington and Pike's Peak at the rate of forty miles an hour, and ninety miles wat the greatest velocity. The speed of a hurricane is SO and 100 miles an hour. The wind on tbe lake the night the balloon went up would probably reach 40 miles an hour, as it bad lees resistance than on shore. The in dications published on Thursday morning and afternoon, previous to the balloon a cension, should bave been examined, and would have been by most aeronauts before a voyage was made. Donaldson, it seems, took no notice of them. From the above observations some deduc tions have been made. It is variously esti mated that Lake MIghigan is from fifty to eigbty miles wide ou the average, and on that basis the calculations following are made: The distance traveled by tbe bailoon. in the event of its continuing a direct fligbt, would be ninety-six miles, if a f peed of thirty-two miles an hour was reached, be tweeu 4:30 and 7:30 P. M., when irknes came on. Tbe gale came on at 12:30 a. m. Friday morning, and therefore eight hours would have elapsed between the hour of the ascension and that time. In the event of a speed of ten miles an hour being reached, tbe ba loon would have bad atnplatime to pass the lake and reach the Michigan shore, if their ca'culations do not extend to a great alti tcde. There are nodates showing the velocity ol the wind at great altitude and balloon i. ti' estimates are only depended npon. The trip from St. Louis to Adam, N. 1., in 18W. was a remarkable one, and .Lake ua tario was crossed in a terrible gale at a rate of speed calculated at 80 miles an hour. AMONG THE BUSINESS MEN.
