Britons, Americans in London|
Want to Relax. By HELEN KIRKPATRICK
Copy right, 1943, by The Indianapolis Times
he Chicago Daily News, Inc. LONDON,
May 15.—Hollywood’s
war consciousness is causing considerable discontent among British and American troops in Britain, ac-
eording to all accounts.
Only two movie theaters of Cen-|
tral London's 14 are showing nonwar films this week—one is “The Black Swan,” an American film, and
the other is the British film, “Miss]
London Limited.”
Few people here want to see a|
plethora of war films with sirens sounding and bombs falling. On the other hand, films like “Desert Victory” play to full houses, but they are on the list of “Must Be Been” movies and people do not go to them for relaxation. The London Daily Mirror's film eritic quoted the remarks of a solgier and a WAAF while standing in Leicester Square, where there are five movie houses. “Blimey, it's another ruddy war film.” said the soldier. The critic also mentions letters he has had from other parts of the country where munitions workers gay that after a day in the factory they want relaxation and the glamour of escapist films.

with red, white and blue stars in a partial blackout. The stunt intrigued members of the teenage corps who were present in large numbers. One of the reasons, of course, the Kaye fan club keeps growing is the maestro’s famous audienceparticipation stunt which permits the boys and girls to lead the band. Four took a whirl at this assignment at the first show yesterday and a George Washington high school student came off with top honors, while a young housewife whose husband stayed home to mind the youngsters came in second. In addition to the extra-cur-ricular features, there are the band regulars, Nancy Norman, the West coast high school girl whom - tile band acquired last year; Tommy Ryan, Arthur Wright, Billy Williams and the Kaye choir. The vaudeville attractions are Sunny Rice, a talented, young dancer who first appeared here last summer as a substitute for an act that didn’t show up. Miss Rice has since gone on to the better bookings and the ballet tap which she demonstrated last time is still the best part of her routine. Don Cummings is back again, too. Don is the rope twirler who spills a line of pretty fair comedy as a build-up for his stunt of jumping through his twirling rope. On the screen, “The Falcon Strikes Back,” as usual, with Tom Conway and the routine excitement.

one of the few strong men to visit Keith's. Fact is, he’s one of the few strong men left. For various reasons, probably financial, the strong man game isn’t as popular
has the field pretty much to him-
His feats of strength include being a human tug-of-war rope between two teams of five men each and picking up a keg of beer by a rope attached te his hair. He also breaks chains to expanding his chest (expansion: eight inches). At noon today he will pull a fire truck around the Circle by the hair of his head. Art Castle and Helene are present with their bicycie routine and Art pulls in some customers from the audience to help out. Jackson and Nedra, dance stylists. have a neat routine with a brief flight of steps. Bert Walton is m. e. and presents some “amateur” talent which turns out to be his partner, a blond, billed as “& company.” Sharkey is a seal and Mark Huling, the seals owner, claims Sharkey is the smartest seal in captivity. At any rate, Sharkey is one smart seal. Ben Dova has an inebriate act which requires him to'climb a portable lampost and read a newspaper. That is somewhat diverting, too. On the screen, Keith's has brought back the grand-daddy of all Hitchcock thrillers, the famous “33 Steps,” which is still better than most of mysteries which it has inspired.
