TRANSIT LEADER ASKS RAIL PROBE,

Wiese Tells Truckers Here Modernization Is Needed.

A Congressional investigation of ~mgnagement and practices of rail-| roads was urged today by W. P. Wiese of Detroit, vice president of the National Transit Corp. . Mr. Wiese spoke before a special ‘meeting of ‘the Common Carrier division of the American Trucking "Association at the Hotel Lincoln, attended by representatives of large trucking lines. ‘A Congressional commission, Mr. : Wiese said, “might investigate possibilities of forc consolidation of railroads and forcing railroads to

divest themselves of their enormous “capital investments’ which are a

growth of policies which may have

been wise at the time they were inaugurated, but which are today no part of the actual transporttaion of commodities and passengers.

‘Changes Should Be Made . . J

“Drastic changes should be made to modernize railroad operation before. any transportation legislation is considered by Congress,” he said. “I would point out to you that "while our industry is competing with ' railroads, we are at the same time vitally interested in seeing that the railroads, which are so valuable to this country, do not. Sollapse,” he ‘ continued. “We are not, however, as individual and corporate taxpayers, interested in taking taxpayers’ money to subsidize inefficiency, or any part of a system: which has become obso- ~ lete or in subsidization to perpetuate obsolete business methods and prac- ; tices.

Loyalty Bruised Boy Hums on Stand as Father Faces Judge.

EW YORK, Feb. 3 (U. P.).—. Little Jimmy Strachen, 3 years old, tried to hum a little tune on the witness stand yesterday just to show the judge his father hadn't hurt him very much. His eyes were swollen and bruised. There was an ugly blue mark over his nose and his hands were marked with purple blotches. * Magistrate Michael Ford’s voice choked and was barely audible. Tears ran down his face and splashed on his robe. Before him with lowered head stood John Strachen, 31. He pleaded guilty to heating his son with a knotted rope! and tying him up with wire. He was held in $15,000 bail.
