5-HOUR SIEGE ENOS IN DEATH OF MAD KILLER Takes Life After Matching Fire With 100 Officers in Bitter Battle. (Continued From Page One) stopped the officers each time they attempted to attack. Gas bombs were tossed at the house, but the madman’s cunning rendered them ineffective. Lantarc had broken every window in the house so that the gas fumes were quickly blown away and did not bother lorn. Fire Is Set to House Finally, an armored bank truck was brought up from Hammond, Ind. The car was equipped with two machine guns which were loosed on the bullet-pocked house. Under cover of the diversion created by the car, other deputies set fire to the house with oil-soaked torches. Then six men were rushed up to the front door of the home. They broke through and, climbing the stairway of the burning and ruined structure, found Lantare and ended the struggle. Sheriff Holley was rushed to the Mercy hospital when rescuers finally were successful in recovering his bleeding body from the bitter cross fire. He died of his wounds at | 1 a. m. Prayed Father Might Hie Lantare’s daughters were at work When the battle broke out. They approached their home to find the seige in progress with bullets #c reaming about the house. Hysi’rical, they watched the scores of riflemen shooting at their father. “Father has been acting strange or two years,” the elder of the girls! aid. “If he has killed someone it j is better that he die.” As the battle wore on the weeping 'aughters prayed that their father might end his own life. At the height of the battle, Lantare was firing rapidly from windows of all four sides of the house. Others Are Wounded He would show himself for a moment and as the attackers concen- | trated their fire would run to an- j other window, and open fire on a ] new front. The others wounded included: Deputy Sheriff Kelly, Detective Ralph Bogardus, Gary: Detective j Opic Cross, Gary: policeman Edward Haack, Gary, and Detective George Methcntes, Gary. Police Chief Tom Martinson and j Sergeant Adam Funk of Hammond j led the detachment which finally J gained entrance into the house. I

COPS ‘CURE’ HIM J /Srv mm % Arthur Ele Victim of a muscular defect which frequently causes his jaw to become dislocated, Arthur Ele, 29, of 1010 South Mount street, until Saturday was a periodical patient at city hospital. Then patrolmen George Jackson and Herschell Musgrove, who, three times within four days, rushed the suffering man to the hospital, took the matter into their own hands and set the jaw themselves, when called to Ele’s home for a fourth time. JACK PiCKFORDIAID TO HIS LAST REST Funeral Service for Actor Is Held at Hollywood. Utl T'it it p.d Press HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 17—Rain beat against the Wee Kirk of the Heather church Monday as those who knew him in the days of his fame paid their last respects to Jack Pickford, former motion picture star. Only relatives and close friends attended funeral services for Pickford, who was 36 when he died in a hospital in Paris a fortnight ago. His sister, Mary Pickford. heavily veiled and attired in black; her husband, Douglas Fairbanks, and Jack’s other sister, Lottie Pickford, sat quietly in an alcove, while Father Michael Mullins read the Roman Catholic burial service. After the service, the little assemblage followed the body to the mausoleum, nearby, where the actor was placed in a crypt beside his mother, Mrs. Charlotte Pickford. Prominent film actors were pallbearers.
