SMITH’S FARM STAND PROVES O.OJ\PUZZLE Republicans in Quandary on How to Fling ATs Words in His Teeth. BY RAY TUCKER PALO ALTO, Cal., Aug. 6.—Republican spell-binders will try to impale Governor Alfred E. Smith on both horns of the equalization fee dilemna as soon as the presidential campaign begins in September. In preliminary conferences held since Smith’s advocacy of what is considered a definition of the fee principle and his denunciation of the fee itself. Republican strategists have chortled over the opportunity the Democratic nominee has afforded for attacking him on both eastern and western fronts. Eut there is a note of irony in the G. O. P. gloating. They are in a quandary on just how to fling Smith’s words in his teeth. And they realize, they are sharpening their steel to meet one of the cleverest political swordsmen of the day. Some Republican advisers suggest that Smith be pictured as attempting to deceive the farmers of the corn belt and the conservative elements of the Atlantic seaboard by twisting words, Taking his proposal for controlling sale of surplus and levying the cost on commodities benefited, they argue that this means nothing but an outright equalization fee. Some Oppose Two-Headed Plan So they hope to pin him down to this position in the East, where they expect it will work to his disadvantage, inasmuch as that territory generally approved Coolidge’s veto of the proposition. This line of attack also contemplates development of the idea in the farming regions of lowa, Kansas. Nebraska, Indiana and Illinois that Smith definitely has outlawed their equalization fee machinery, and that, since there is no other known method of carrying out his agricultural plan, his sympathy is political rather than agricultural. But other leaders oppose this two-headed plan. They believe that citation of Smith’s anti-fee views will tend to take the sting out of that issue for the Republican party. Their proposal is to persuade the West that both candidates and parties are against the fee, and, therefore, the farmers can expect a better deal from Herbert Hoover, an lowa boy and western man, than from Tammany Hall and a candidate who is the product of the city streets. Tilson’s Feelings Plain With Hoover’s detailed development of his farm ideas in an acceptance address expected to show Iris sympathy for agriculture, the wtter proposal will probably carry great weight. The two methods of handling this subject are understood to have been the main subject discused by Hoover and John Q. Tilson, Republican floor leader, before the latter left for the East last night. Tilscn will have charge of the eastern speakers’ bureau in New York, and the first use of Smith’s conflicting equalization statements probably will be made in the Maine campaign. Tilson left no doubt of his feeling in the matter. “Smith’s several statements on the equalization fee,” he said, “make it look like a now-you-see-it-now-you-don’t Jack in the Bex proposition.” Complicated by McMullen The situation further is complicated by the assertion of Governor Adam McMullen of Nebraska, who conferred with Hoover while the latter was en route to the coast, that he drafted the Democrats’ agricultural plank and that it was an indorsement of the fee. George N. Peek, another fee advocate, has said he was “satisfied” with the position taken by Smith and John J. Raskob, Democratic national chairman, to which Tilson gave this dry rejoiner: “With Smith denouncing the equalization fee, Peek must now feel like Democratic dry delegates from the South did after they" returned home from the Houston convention.” THORNTOWN CHARTER Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity Given Recognition.
