Ed Wynn Will Do His Christmas Shopping Here
| By WALTER D. TUCKMAS A human Christmas tree was Ed ■Wynn when I bumped into him in thè lobby of thè Claypool Hotel thè other aftemoon. He had bundles under both arms and balanced another pile on his two hands. “Sorry I am two minutes late.” he said. “Had to do ray Christmas shopping. Realiv there is no sense te thè damed thing." I trailed him to his room. The room looked like thè- headquarters e’ Santa Claus. Packages and bundles everywhere. “Looks silly for a grownup man to go maii about Christmas,” he said. ■'The trouble with thè whole darned business is that I bave just startedrChristmas this year is going to cosi me $3.000 and then some. That’s some expensive Christmas feeling. I go off my bean at Christmas timo. Nobody can hold me down.” Then he yelled this as he took a lcng llst of names out of his pocket. ‘These are those for whom I buy presenta.” he grinned. “Look at this. ‘Mrs. E —. sls present.’ She is my brother’s mother-in-law. Now I ask you what does she m@n in my lise? But I bave remembered her.” I looked around thè room and saw a big box. “What in thè world is that?” I asked. “More Christmas,” Wynn explalned is a complete roulette outflt, K>ne of those parlor sets. It is for a friend of mine. Only cost $300.“ I thought Wynn a very wise man then. Probably Christmas will not bo such a dead loss to him aster all Turning to his manager, Wynn said: "I have decided about thè ejeven stage hands. lam going to give them caps. I only need eleven of them, but 1 will buy twelve. Keep one for myself. I am going to get something in wnolesale lots.” “I am going right over and buy bill crepa! ~~ BF STftTETROOPS Adjutant General Backs Move to Keep Down Expenses. The abolishment of State drill pay to members of thè Indiana National Guard, at an average of $20,000 a year, is proposed in a bill to be introduced in thè coming session of thè Legislature. Adjutant General Smith is behind thè proposal. The proposed bill sets out that thè $20,000 will be used to provide club rooma and recreation being demanded by members of thè Guard. | General Smith has taken thè matter up with Govemor McCray. who is waiting for a copy of thè bill before he expresses himself. Other changes also are being included in thè bill, which would enable thè National Guard to function on its $20.000 appropriation. which will not be increased this year, although thè Guard has increased from 3,000 to 6,000. The State pay averaged 20 cents per drill night. The Federai Government pays a $1 additional for drill work. some more. Going to do all my Christmas shopping right here in this city,” Wynn said. “My family? Oh, yes. There are some things for thè boy,” he said. (li will take a special train to cart those home.) I gave my wife several weeks ago a wondc-rful ring for our wedding anniversary. It cost a small fortune. I intended it to be a Christmas gift - for thè next Ave years, but 1 lost my when I saw a marvel•us imported kimono and I plunked down some more cash for that.” There is a System behind Wynn’s .'unmaking. He works night and day on new things for his play. “The Perfcct Fool,” now at Engllsh’s. It takes study to thlnk up funny things. There must be a brain back of every joke.
