fans began lining up outside the Walker Theater at 11 p.m. the night before. By 3:30 a.m., some 400 were lined up for a block and a half. By the time the doors opened at 4:30 a.m., the line stretched two blocks, with more than 650 people waiting to get in to see host Tom Joyner, newswoman Sybil Wilkes, comedians J. Anthony Brown and Mrya J., commentator Tavis Smiley and singer Cherelle. The Joyner show, heard weekday mornings on KISS 106.7FM/ WBKS, was making its first visit to Indy since July 1996 to help kick off the Coca-Cola Circle City Classic. And kick it they did. When the broadcast began, the theater was shaking with thunderous cheers, yells and applause, as the Joyner cast members took the stage. They wasted no time in giving those in attendance and those listing on radio in Indianapolis and the nation a show! A rousing opening set by Cherelle made sure that no one was sleeping. Dressed in a onepiece black pantsuit that left little to the imagination, Cherelle, backed up by her ten-piece band, got the 1,000 spectators dancing in their seats. The energy level continuedforfoureneigetichours!! A sophisticated audio and ' sound system was able to recreate all the popular regular features of the ‘Tom Joyner Morning Show.” The audience laughed and clapped during the two renditions of the daily “It’s Your World” soap opera. They laughed as Mrya J. gave her “Ups for the Single Mom.” And the house came down when J. Anthony Brown did another of his popular hit song parodies. The action wasn’t just confined to the Walker Theater stage. Many times during the four-hour performance and broadcast, Tom Joyner and the cast took wireless microphones and ventured into the audience, even up in the balcony, talking, cajoling and relating to the audience. During the commercial breaks, the fun continued, with jokes, interviews and dancing. The program was a four-hour love affair with fans, some of which had driven to the Walker Theater from Ohio, Michigan and Tennessee. Guests on the program included Rev. Charles Williams, President Indiana Black Expo, who talked about the significance of the CocaCola Circle City Classic. During the program’s “Little Known Black History Facts” segment, Sandra Smith, President of the Madame Walker Theater Center, talked to Joyner’s nationwide radio audience about Madame Walker’s accomplishments affecting Indianapolis and the nation. Dr. Oswald Bronson, President of Bethune-Cookman College, accompanied by the Wildcat mascot, represented one of the two Black Colleges involved in the 15th annual Classic Along with entertainment and comedy, the ‘Tom Joyner Morning Show” deals with serious issues affecting African Americans. And the Joyner show in Indianapolis didn’t shy away from serious issues. In his commentary, Tkvis Smiley bluntly talked about why African Americans in Indiana should make Democratic State Senator Cleo Washington the first Black State Treasurer in Indiana. Washington, who was present, received a resounding ovation from the 1,000 in attendance. Smiley also said that Blacks should strongly support the reelection of Congresswoman Julia Carson, who he said was “being targeted by the Republican Party
