Is surgery needed to treat gum disease?

Ask Dr. Scott By Leonard Scott, LXDlS

Q: My dentist says I need surgery to cure my gum disease. Is there any other way? A: It is easy to understand a patient wanting to avoid surgery. That is why non-surgical treatments of gum conditions deserve a close look. Most of these treatment methods include combinations of salt, hydrogen peroxide and sodium bicarbonate.

The problem with these treatment is that they are being promoted as “magic elixers.” These materials have no mystical abilities to cure the causes of gum disease. For that matter, gum surgery has no magical qualities either. At this point, both surgical and nonsurgical treatments aim largely at a simple, non-glamor-ous goal: keeping the teeth and gums clean. There are clearly times that surgery is called for, to change the shape of the gums and leave them in a condition that is easier to clean. In these cases, a totally nonsurgical treatment will not serve a patient’s best interests. For more information, write 3532 N. Keystone Ave., 46218, or call 923-3343.
