THE INDIANAPOLIS RECORDER
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22,1994
Top Story: It has been four years since Jonathan Butler has been on the chart's. But, after a tumultuous legal dispute with his former record label, the native South African is back with the single “I’m On My Knees,” from his Mercury Records album “Head To Head.” Even though Butler had two top 10 R&B hits, several top 40 hits, a gold album, two Grammy nominations and a 50-city tour with Whitney Houston, he was not pleased with his label, Jive Records in 1988. While he did not divulge any details about his legal wrangling with Jive, he says he and Jive had creative, religious beliefs and they impacted his lyrics. Out from under Jive’s wing, Butler is definitely pleased with his new release. His single marks his return to the R&B music charts and Butler says the song is unlike anything he has ever written.
Since the singer has become a born-again Christian a few years ago, he has become more aware of his relationship with God. He says while most of the songs on his album are about love, many of those same songs have a spiritual meaning. As usual, Butler wrote and produced most of the songs on his album with longtime collaborator Gerry Brown. In addition, he jammed with keyboardist Herbie Hancock on one track and says he’s happy with an album that represents all kinds of music, including R&B, jazz, pop, gospel, and South African rhythms. Although he has been missing from the record stores, Butler has not been missing in action. He has spent much of the last four years on the road, touring the U.S. and Japan. And he has written songs recorded by Regina Bell, George Benson,

Angela Bofill, Billy Ocean, Al Jarreau and others. People, Places & Things: The multicultural Motion Picture Awards are a fantastic idea, but the awards show still hasn’t gotten the kind of recognition it needs or deserves. For the second year, press was almost nonexistentforthisevent, hosted by Loni Anderson and Mario Van Peebles. Diahann Carol! was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award, while the Pacesetter Award was bestowed upon director Oliver Stone. A star-studded multiracial turn-out featured the likes of Louis
Gossett Jr>, Lou Diamond Phillips, Andy Garcia, Margaret Cho, Rosie Perez, and Forest Whitaker. Allen Payne and Jada Pinkett are currently starring in the Gramercy Picture’s film “Jason’s Lyric." Set in Houston, Payne stars as Jason Alexander, a young appliance store clerk who harbors guilty feelings about his father’s death, his hardworking mother and his younger brother who has been in and out of jail for the past several years. Jason has no zest for life until he meets up with the thoughtful Lyric Greer, played by Pinkett. “Jason’s Lyric” also stars Bokeem Woodbine, Naughty By Nature’s Treach, Forest Whitaker, Suzzane Douglas and comedian Eddie Griffin. “Jason’s Lyric” is currently showing in selected theaters nationwide. Be sure to check out the film’s awesome soundtrack
on Mercury Records. The first single “U Will Know” features an all-star cast of today’s hottest R&B male vocalists, including Brian McKnight, R. Kelly, Boyz II Men, and Tevin Campbell, who call themselves “Black Men United." While on the subject, you can catch Pinkett starring in the upcoming Keenan Ivory Wayans film “Low Down Dirty Shame,” which is set to hit theaters in November. Meanwhile, Payne just finished shooting the ‘Walking Dead," another George Jackson and Doug McHenry production. The film’s about Black Marines in the Vietnam War. Walking Dead" is slated toopen sometime next year. Feedback: It's time to hear what’s on your mind. After all the callers we’ve had over the past month dissin’ Prince, Segal Westbrook of Jacksonville, Fla.
called in to his defense. Segal feels it is wrong for everyone to dis' Prince because of his personal preference in women. Since he has never made a song that puts down Black women or directly puts down women, we should all back off! You’re right Segal, Prince has never shown direct disrespect towards Black women in his songs, but he hasn’t left color completely out of his music. There have been racial references in more than one Prince song. In fact, he even has a song called “Race.” Besides, our callers weren’t complaining about the way Prince treated Black women who wanted to meet him at his Glam Slam Club in Los Angeles. They were upset by the lack of Black women featured in his videos. Perhaps you have missed their point.
