Black Panthers and Koreans prove they know bow to do business 1 The recent agreement between the Block Panther Militia and a local Korean-American merchant U a aign of how things can |et done if the parties involved are willing to woitto-
When allegations of queadonable tactics are removed, one thing still reaudns, and that is the color ofmoney is still the most important consideration In the agreement, not the ctrfor of a person's skin. It was the lack of money that created the educational campaign on the part of the Blade Panther Militia, not the race trf the owners of ABC Beauty Supply. One factor that got very little attention in the Black Panther Militia’s efforts to bring a greater understanding on where to spend mohey in the Blade community is that the efforts of the Btod Panther Militia were nothing more tfian an education campaign, and that is all it was. It was not extortion. It was not illegal. v And it makes aense. ; t What is more alarming, however, is that as the Black residents of Indianapolis become more aware of the businesses located in their neighborhoods and how these businesses are not investing in the areas where they are located, then we will see a repeat of this activity over and over again. ; There are not a lot of Korean-owned business ventures in Camel and Martinsville, and both areas have a total popula-, tk» less than all of the African Americans in Indianapolis, but the Koreans are located where the Black community is. If it wefe just a maner of ndiere a eompany does business, then why are the Korean-owned beauty supply houses all located in the areas where die Black population is greatest? Obviously, some other areas know how to do business, too.
First Lani Guinier, next... President Bill Clinton has decided he is not going to be able to defend the writings of Lani Guinier, Ms nominee for assistant attorney general of the United States. After rumon of a fierce battle that would have been waged over Ouinier’s confirmation, Clinton has done once again the only thing he has been able to do consistendy since becoming president, and dot is change Ms mind. Ouinier’s record on civil rights issues does not merit the type of treatment to has received and her ability to offer opinions designed to generaie and stimulate thou^n are totally^ consistent with her position as a college professor. According to election results, over 80 percent of all Black females who voted cast di^rballou in fevor of Clinton. In return. quer strategy. It has been quite effective. What is my prescription? First, you have to realize Monday morning is the biggest banking day of the week. That’s die day all the churches make their deposits after a prosperous Sunday. To de-fragment, the first thing «tmhf«fnhappt»nI«Rl^Hrrhqirctiff mmff hank at one bank. It doesn't matter wMch bank. It mutt be die same bank. Notice, none of the churches give up my control over their individual accounts. Their memberriiip must be encouraged to bmk at the same bank. The first
step must be economic unity.
At this point, special interest rates cm be negotiated for mortgages, charge cards, car loms and business loans. TMs will make it efofiBr for minority entrepreneurs to get a foir
shot at starting minority businesses.
The second step is to developa“war chest” A percentage of each church's income—let's call it a tithe—must go into tMs war chest The purpose of this war chest is to Mreacompetent law fiini(i) to go law suit crazy. The fact of the mallbr is whether you win or lose, it’sgoing to cost the system money to defend against the suits. How do you kill die system? You shoot , M it fothe “pocketbook.” MarcMng around city hall and praying on the steps of die police station are not effective. All it does is create a apectade.Thetdevision news loves it because k helps with their programming. But that's
about all k’s good for.
