Police officers save children from burning vehicle An Indianapolis man led police on a three county chase and attempted to kill himself and his children by torching the vehicle they were riding in before he was arrested. When finally caught in Bartholomew County, police said Keith D. Allender was trying to pull his children into a fire inside a van. Allender, 31, of the 3100 block of E. Michigan Street, was charged with arson and attempted murder. He was in serious condition at Wishard Memorial Hospital. Allender’s daughter was in serious condition at Methodist Hospital with bums and his son was treated and released from a Columbus hospital. The incident began in Indianapolis about 12:20 a.m. and ended 30 minutes later. Bartholomew County. Police were called by Allender’s ex-wife, Tnella S. Kincaid, who said she had gone to his house to pick up their children, Keith D. Allender Jr., 10, and Shmeka R. Kincaid, 9. When she arrived, police said, Allender asked her to take him to the Village Pantry at 305 N. Oxford St. where he began dousing the interior of the car with gasoline from two soda cans. Kincaid told police Allender told the family they were all going to die, lit a match and started a fire. He then took the children and fled in a van owned by the Diamond R Ice Cream Co., where he had been working for the last two weeks. A Marion County sheriffs deputy spotted the van on 1-65 near County Line Road and began chasing it Allender ran off the road and crashed the van into a fence. He had started another fire and was trying to pull his children into it when police arrived. A Columbus police officer sustained a broken arm in the struggle to subdue Allender. Suspension recommended for 3 drill team members An Indianapolis Police Department ofiicial recommended to Chief Paul A. Annee on Friday that three drill team members be suspended without pay for speeding through Michigan and Indiana on May 3. Deputy Chief of Operations James E. Campbell gave the recommendation after reprimanding and counseling the three officers, Sgt. James B. McAtee, Officer Michael G. Adkins and Officer Dwight D. Tripp, police said. McAtee is the son of Marion County Sheriff Joseph G. McAtee. Campbell advised Annee the three be suspended for one day each without pay for their conduct. The officers had driven at high rates of speed on their return to Indiana from Benton Harbor, Mich, and had been stopped by Michigan State and Indiana State police, but were not given a ticket. Campbell said the resulting loss of pay for each is roughly equivalent to the amount they would have been fined had they been issued two speeding tickets. “I know the public is disappointed that this incident did not conform to those standards and I assure you that I have emphasized to each officer involved that this conduct is unacceptable,” Campbell said. The IPD Board of Captains has to vote on the recommendation before Annee can enforce the suspension. Man shot by unknown assailant An Indianapolis man was shot in the lower back by an unknown assailant Saturday evening, police said. Caldwell Morris, 26, of the 10000 block of E. Aristocrat, was sent to Wishard Memorial Hospital Satufday after he was shot as he sat in an Eastside bar. Morris told police two black males confronted him and accused him of jumping them the night before. A fight erupted and one of the suspects shot Morris. He told police he did not know the men.
Woman pleads guilty to fraud A woman indicted by a Marion County special grand jury pleaded guilty to welfare fraud last week. Mitzi J. Rogers, of the 300 block of E. Terrace Avenue, was among six people indicted in midFebruary after a review of the spending practices of the Center Township trustee’s office. Four recipients, an employee, a Center Township trustee advisory board member and a rental management company employee were indicted on charges of fraud, theft, bribery and perjury. Under a plea agreement, Rogers, 34, pleaded guilty Thursday to welfare fraud, a Class D felony. In return, the prosecutor’s office will drop a similar Class C felony charge. Rogers is scheduled for sentencing June 14 in Marion Superior Court, Criminal Division Room 4. Teen sentenced in shooting A juvenile involved in the school bus shooting of Schneik Carpenter was ordered Friday to perform up to 300 hours of community service work by a special juvenile coun judge. Tellis J. Wilson, who admitted he acted as lookout to spot two intended targets on a school bus last Sept. 21, pleaded guilty to aiding in criminal recklessness and a misdemeanor handgun charge. Wilson, 13, also received a suspended sentence to the Indiana Boys School for his role in the shooting outside John Marshall Junior High School. He was put on indefinite probation, with his status set for review in August. Judge John R. Barney accepted the plea agreement and said if Wilson finds a job this summer, he will only have to perform 200 hours of community service. Judge sets aside Sanders’ conviction A judge set aside former schoolteacher Fred C. Sanders’ involuntary manslaughter conviction Friday, because Sanders was im-
era was charged with fatally shooting Indianapolis Patrolman MM J. Faber on Aug. 14,1988 and was sentenced to serve seven years in prison. Spencer's ruling means Sanders, who already has spent mote than two years behind bars, could be released early or face trial on new charges, including murder. The Marion County prosecutor , sorriceisrequiredwithin20days to offer Sanders die chance to plead guilty to the involuntary manslaughter charge. After that offer is made, Sanders has 20 days to respond. If he does not plead guilty, the original murder against Sanders or another charge could oe refiled and Sanders could be tried before a jury. The prosecutor’s office can also appeal the ruling.
