Henderson enroute to Hollywood?

DALLAS--

Thomas (Hollywood) Henderson, indicated he may not come out of retirement afterall. Everyone has guessed (including oddsmaker Jimmy The Greek, Snyder), that the former Dallas Cowboys’ line backer would return to the game, in which he was forced into early retirement by Dallas coach Tom Landry. Landry said last week he fired Henderson instead of demoting the fifth-year, former No. 1 draft choice’s ego because he couldn’t handle second-

string status.

“I decided he couldn’t function (on the bench)’’ said Landry. “His ego is such that he eeds to start.” Once Landry told Henderson he was being placed on waivers athe controversial player an nounced his retirement from football in a hastened call news

conference.

Mike Hegman started at Henderson’s strongside line backer position Thanksgiving Day when the Cowboys lost to the Houston Oilers--the third straight week they had been

beaten.

Henderson, w ho acquired the reputation as a cocky loud mouth with press verbiage prior to this year Super Bowl with the Pittsburgh Steelers. said he just may be through with the game. T ve played for five seasons without an injury or having to have any surgery,” he said during an interview on national television Thanksgiving Day. “Football is not the only thing 1 can do. I can do what you're doing,” he told CBS sportscaster Brent Musberger. Musberger had asked Hen derson about his wearing a towel two weeks ago during Dallas’ lost to the Washington Redskins. Henderson held his linger in the air giving the No. 1 sign as he w as being filmed by

cameras.

Asked by Musberger about the gesture, Henderson, re torted 'holding his small daugh ten. "I don’t think you really know what it was for. 'Preston Pearson 'Dallas Cowboys playeri, had given it to me before the game,” Henderson said. He insisted the inscribed towel and his signal mg Dallas was No. 1 had nothing to do with his break down in communication with his coach. Henderson was recently quoted during an interview with Playboy Magazine as implying he thought the Cow boys organization had con

HENDERSON

sidered trying to shut him up. When asked by the interview if the Cowboys organization “so tied to its version of a com puterized football player would really rather shut you up?” Henderson replied. I think it's been discussed several times.” During the press conference December 19, Henderson said “he was not bitter." "It’s not a good time for me. It hurts a lot. I love t.he Dallas fans. I love the Cowboys. I don't want to play

for another team.

“The Cowbosys have the tradition in this sort of thing... Ask Duane Thomas or Bob Hayes or Jean Fugett,” he'

added.

Landry said that it Hender son decides to come out ot retirement then the Cowboys will ask a No. 1 draft choice from the team that wants him. A Hard Look < ON i IN! >. Winter CONTINUE FROM PAGE 8 signs at the beginning of these meetings. The Oakland-to-Denver shift is expected a hot item for the meetings. There have been ongoing negotiations in recent weeks with oilman Marvin Davis as A’s owner Charles 0. Finley seeks to sell the club which had the lowest atten dance in the majors past season. It is unlikely, however, that any potential buyer of the Mets will show up, simply because there has not been enough time for offers to be studies. announcement that the club might be sold came from the Payson Family only a few weeks ago. Concerning players - there was a time, long ago, it seems, when most player movement was generated by teams making trades at these meetings. Instead the norm has changed to players themselves moving form club to club, via the free-agent re entry draft. In the three years before the re-entry draft began, major league clubs completed 64 trades involving 162 players at the winter meetings. In the three years since free agency, however, the trade markets at these meetings has been reduced to 49 deals with 125 palyers involved. Last year. 13 players were swapped during the meetings, with noted players like Dan Ford, Toby Harrah, BuddyBell. Jerry Koosman and Bill Lee among those changing teams.
