BERNIE HALL LINDA OSTERMEIER DIANE LYERSON

‘Capricorn one’ blacks out our hero named O.J. Everybody's raving about O.J. Simpson’s role as a black astronaut in the film “Capricorn One,” and we wonder why. First the film is highly illogical. Sure, the possibility of staged space landings exists among cynics, but complete with tape recorded conversation between the astronauts perfectly synchronized to their lip movements? Let's be serious. Also our hero Orenthal James keeps getting played down. Whenever he walks on camera with his fellow astronauts, he is either last in line, or has a heavy shadow cast over him apparently by bad

cities....No, the joke isn't really on Epic recording songstress Patti Labelle, but there will definitely be lots of laughter when she sets out to do a few select dates with comedian extraordinaire Richard Pryor. As of now, their first date together will be Aug. 11 at San Diego’s Golden Hall. Also this month, there will be five dates in San Carlos at the Circle Star Theatre and a possible date at the Aladdin Theatre in Las Vegas. On Sept. 1st, the fantastic duo will begin a two night stint at Red Rocks in Denver. From there. they’ll move to New York’s City Center for four nights. BLACK HISTORY QUIZ: Where is “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”?...A log cabin located in Rockville, Md., is believed to be the birth place of Josiah Henson, an escaped slave immortalized in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel about the antebellum South. Henson, born in 1789, escaped from slavery in 1830, and established a fugitive slave community in Canada. In 1849, Henson met Mrs.

SOUL SOUNDS CONTINUED FROM PAGE 10 “Shout" and “Twist and Shout”?) when there were only three: Kelly, Rudolph, and lead singer Ronald. Following their first gold record, 1969’s “It’s Your Thing,” the doo-woppers bounced back in 1973 with three more players--brothers Ernie and Marvin and brother-in-law Chris Jasper--and a new sound. They then set out to become living legends: the first bl—h act out of the ’50s to have a stronghold on the current market. They had mesmerizing ballads like “Who’s That Lady" and Seals and Crofts’ “Summer Breeze,” as well as fiery rock-funk tunes like “Fight the Power,” another gold single, and "Livin’ in the Life.” Some are slightly overweight, but they can still rock with the best of them, both live and on record, as their two platinum and six gold singles will attest. Appearing with the Isleys will be Dramatics, whose hits dating back to the old Stax Records days include “In the Rain,” “Whatcha See is Whatcha Get," and “Shake it Well,” and \ Taste of Honev. Latter group, led by guitar-playing loveiioe Janice Johnson and Hazel Payne, burst ever so quickly on the market this summer with a highly commercial disco smash, “Boogie Oogie Oogie.” Miss Johnson’s bass line drives the song in an unashamedly funky manner, while Miss Payne’s lead guitar licks reek of the Bee Gees’ 1976 hit “You Should Be Dancing.” •** Following are the week’s pick Soul Sounds: “What You Waitin’ For” - STARGARD; “I Thought It Was You” - HERBIE HANCOCK; “Ain’t We Funky Now” - BROTHERS JOHNSON; “Everybody Has a Dream” -- MANHATTANS; and “Love Brought Me Back” -- D.J. ROGERS.
