Melba Moore here Sunday

Broadway and recording star Melba Moore will wrap up Indianapolis Museum of Art’s 1977 “under the stars” concert

Mr. James C. Cummings, former staffer on this newspaper and presently heading the National Black Republican Council, was guest on the National Black Network on TV -8 Sunday, Aug. 7. An experienced PR man in his own right, he fielded questions on the Negro in the political arena with clarity and brilliant expertise. The young man has always been my favorite in the field of public relations, and is destined to go places. . . because he has what it takes to succeed in the world today. And should the Republicans win in 1980 he will most certainly be an important cog in the wheel of influential Blacks who’ll be named to high positions in the victorious

party.

RENEEE FERGUSON RENEE FERGUSON, the handsome gal with the wide smile and a former reporter for WTHR -TV channel 13, is currently a member of the news team at Channel 2-TV in Chicago. Miss Renee, a journalism graduate from Indiana University, was a reporter for the Indianapolis News before entering television. She was with Channel 13 from 1972 to 1977 and her coverage of the criminally insane led to the legislature’s revising sentencing laws. She also did a documentary, filmed in Texas, on the problem of migrant and alien workers. Here’s hoping her many years of success in Chicago.

SY OLIVER MEET SY OLIVER. . . the musical genius from southern Ohio. We met Sy man, many years ago in Columbus, Ohio, as a young musician looking for new musical worlds to conquer. He got his start (methinks) with the nationally-famous McKinney’s Cotton Pickers of Springfield, Ohio. Later he joined Don Redmond’s band and took off for the big time. Later, he went to California where he became a topflight arranger in his field. The next we heard of him was a note saying he would stop in Naptown to see me, enroute

to Columbus, Ohio for induction into the man’s Army. I’ll never forget the day he drove into town driving a high-powered Dusenberg automobile. We chatted for a short spell and he left for Ohio. What brought back memories of the good ole days was his picture in The Chicago Daily Defender. And, where ever he is, we sincerely hope he’s doing fine and enjoying the very best of health. And that’s for real. We finally made it back to the 500 block on the Avenoo last Monday. The reason: to have my semi-annual hair-cut. We did see a few of the boys. . . including James McQueen, owner of the famous bistro known as The Place To Play and EAT, also Bob Welch, Harold Bell, R.O. Riley, and Chester Lee. While the old STREET isn’t what it used to be - it is still perking even if it is drawing its last breath. We are hoping that some enterprising group of BLACKS will step into the picture and help make the AVENOO live again in all its glory. If you don’t the ofays will move in and take over. Then where will you be? Incidentally, the Elks Club on Capitol Ave at 12th is being renovated for your pleasurable enjoyment every Friday and Saturday when they present live entertainment, featuring the Blue Diamonds with Donald Rhoades rockin’ the joint with his popular vocalizing style. Drop in and see for yourself and meet Brothers Fred Roby, Felix Howard and Monard Adams. BELIEVE IT OR NOT. . . the Eastside of town should be named Babyland. . . never seen so many young critters,.. Girls still in their teens carrying one in their arms and one now showing in their bellies. Is it for kicks or WELFARE (ADC) checks? It is downright disgraceful. . . Most of these girls are way under 16 years of age. . or is it because of too much CAR HOPPING? (If you dig what we mean. Just what are these mothers thinking when they see their tender young daughters dashing out of the house to hop in some creep’s shining and (balance-due) chariot with four wheels. ? Or, are these mothers helping to increase the amount of WELFARE CHECKS coming into the home. Your guess is as good as mine. . . (Whatchabet?)
