SOME YEARS BACK the Theatrical Department ran an annual City-Wide Recorder Jazz Poll using only local talent. Plans are in the making to resume this affair in the very near future. Dort’t you think that this would be a good deal? . . . The winners would receive trophies and a certificate of merit at the Grand Ball . . . Why not, drop us a line letting us know what you think of the above happenings? . . . Your letters could start the poll rollin’ ... Believe Me! . . . WE THANK Willis Dyer, band-leader-salesman for the Schmitt Music Co. for his kindness extended the Recorder Staff and Yours truly, before the recent organ concert of Don Baker, noted organist, recording and motion picture star. The entire concert was played on the beautiful new CONN ORGAN. Willis is the first and only Sepia salesman selling the Conn instrument in the city. DEATH LAST WEEK claimed Fred Wisdom, 61, pianist and one of our best musician friends. As we think back to the early 30s when the Avenue was really jumpin’—all the talk among the nite lifers were: “Let’s go to the Cotton Club and hear the Wisdom Bros. Combo. The cats are jumpin’ like mad.” Notforgetting, “Georgia Boy,” the great entertainer now retired and living in Louisville, Ky. The combo was under the coleadership of both Fred and his brother, Walt, who wailed ‘much trumpet’ along with Kelly, the drummer-man out of Ohio. The rest of the sidemen sat in at different times making the crew the best in the city. There were jam sessions each and every afternoon and night except Sundays . . . Believe Me When I Tell You These Things. I was there. During the 40s after the termination of the Cotton Club contract the brothers went out on their own with Fred becoming a member of Bob Womack and his Continued on Page 13

"To Kill A Mockingbird" Starring Gregory Peck At Walker Sunday
An important milestone in the career of film star Gregory Peck took shape at Universal studios when Peck starred in the PakulaMulligan production, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” based on Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize novel.
His performance as “Atticus Finch,” the Alabama lawyer and widower who teaches the pitfalls of injustice and prejudice to his two growing children, marks the first time in 31 starring motion pictures that Peck has appeared on the screen without any romantic vis-a-vis. Neither wife nor sweetheart will share a single scene with him in “To Kill a Mockingbird,” scheduled to open Sunday at the Walker Theater.
“And yet,” says Gregory, “it is one of the most beautiful love stories ever to be made into a film. It is this magnificent relationship between father and children that made Miss Lee’s novel so great, a spirit pronounced simply and honestly so that all would understand. It is the love expressed in ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ that made it a best-seller for almost 100 straight weeks, achoice of a record-breaking four book clubs and a sale that is reaching toward five million copies.
JAMES BROWN ‘Mr. Dynamite’
himself: “How does he do it? How can one person have so much drive and energy and talent?”
Brown and his complete and exciting revue will be presented in two performances Friday, March 27 by the popular Defiants Club. Show time is 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. at the Murat Theater. Tickets are available at the Claypool Ticket Agency.
