Cosmetic Industry
The Madame C. J. Walker Manufacturing Company of Indiana Inc. whose home office and factory are located in the Walker Building— Indiana Ave. at West St.—Indianapolis, is 62 years old- having been founded in 1900. This Hair and Skin Cosmetic company was established by the famous Mme. C. J. Walker, one of America’s early business titans — a remarkable and gifted woman who was born Sarah Breedlove in a slave cabin in Delta, Louisiana, December 23, 1867, of ex-slave parents. After her marriage to Charles J. Walker of St. Louis, in the 1890’s, she became known thereafter as Madame C. J. Walker. Madame C. J. Walker and Modern Beauty Culture are synonymous. The life of this indefatigable woman to this day is an intimate part of the cosmetic industry all over the world. Not only do thousands of women find economic emanicipation through Beauty Culture, but the personality of millions of people was upgraded because Madame Walker lived. The beauty industry pioneered by Madame C. J. Walker has grown today into a market estimated at over 300 million dollars annually with the better than eighteen million Negroes in America as the area of concentration. This market

The Madame Walker company is proud of its employee-manage-ment relations. Employee turnover is negligible. Madame Walker believed, and it is the theme of the company today, that there is beauty in all skin tones and all textures of hair. Madame Walker products were originally designed to enhance this natural beauty and it is with this idea that they are manufactured today. Beauty Culture owes much to Madame Walker who played a tremendous role in making it one of the most glamorous, creative and profitable careers open to men and women. Madame C. J. Walker was the first person selected by thd* readers of Ebony magazine for the Negro Hall of Fame, and she was chosen by the Pittsburgh Courier in its Fiftieth Anniversary edition as one of the fifty greatest Negro Americans of all time. The officers and directors of the firm are Atty. Robert Lee Brokenburr, Chairman of the Board; Mrs. A’Lelia R. Nelson, President: Mrs. A’Lelia P. Bundles, Vice President; Mrs. Violet D. finds all of the major and minor cosmetic companies today seeking to get a part of this lucrative business. This the Mme. C. J. Walker Mfg. Company finds itself in direct competition with the biggest ind smallest cosmetic companies in the field. Through it all the Mme. C. J. Walker Company has grown and prospered and the future potential of the company is great. In* 1900 Madame Walker, who was then living in St. Louis, Missouri made an ointment which improved the appearance of her hair to such an extent that friends begged her to sell them a jar. Word of this hair and scalp ointment spread quickly, and Madame Walker was literally forced into the hair preparations business. She sold her ointment door to door in St. Louis. Meanwhile she increased her line to five products and began to make sales trips to other cities. On one such trip to Indianapolis in 1909, she was so impressed with the city and its central location, nationally, that she moved her residence and factory here in 1910. Since that time, Indianapolis has been the home of the Madame Walker Company. Madame Walker was active in Indianapolis community life giving \ unselfishly of her time and money to deserving causes. She was the first person to give $1,000 toward the building fund of the Senate Avenue YMCA. Today, this YMCA, now the Fall Creek Parkway Branch YMCA in Indianapolis, is in a new million dollar building and the Mme. C. J. Walker Mfg. Company under wrote the cost of furnishing the main lounge in this building. AS SHE CONTINUED to travel extensively, she stressed the need of scalp and hair health to promote hair beauty. She taught methods of sannitationto prevent the spread of tetter and other common disorders of the day. Realizing that she would need help in distributing her products and in teaching a basic course in hair culure, sheorganized a group of Madame Walker Agents throughout the nation to sell her products and teach hair culture. Thus she provided jobs for many, assured distribution and started the Madame Walker System of Beauty Cul-
ture.
