Funeral services were held in Columbus, Ohio last Wednesday. Mrs. Douglass was the former wife of our good friend end co-worker, John Elliot Douglass, who along with the writer contacted the first cooking school ani food show for Ihe Recorder in 1935. Mrs. Douglass' death came as a complete shock to her many friends in Naptown and especially to the writer, who had known her for more than 20 years. When we first met the lovely lady around 1927, she was acclaimed the most beautiful girl in central Ohio, end following that time won many beauty contests. A NEW YEAR'S greetings letter came in from Leo Lesser from somewhere in Korea. He savs he considers himself quite fortunate to be alive ana thanks the Master above for still being alive and able to moke it. He also soys that it is actually pitiful to see these little MdMitanisirfg* a»OM<Hwit)*o«t?clothing, ond men ore dying by tha thousands, with refugees fleeing the oncoming enemy with general chaos ond disorder everywhere. The children ore hungry, sick ond not even knoWtng where their parents are. He says that the Recorder rhouid have sent me or brother Chambers over to cover the war. (This I refuse to do (smiles). He feels that the NAACP should investigate conditions among colored soldiers' in this "Police Action." (Several paragraphs deleted for obvious reasons). He wants to know what Scotty Scott is doing these days. He also inquired of other friends. Leo is the boy who sent a check for $5.00 to buy the boys a New Year's drink. . . . Those participating in the drink were: Jesse Robinson, Bernie Miller, Howard Fillmore, Wm. (Bill) Chambers, Scotty Scott, Eddie Hammond, Big Town; Mitchell, Robert Hines, George White ond yours truly. Others in the gang who missed the freebie were: George Morris, Oscar Harris, Weldon Beverly, Dupree Dancy, Emmett Randolph and Bill Cox. Believe it or not, the check refused fro bounce. . . .
