then, many aggressive community organizations have been battling for the lifting of the barrier against employment of Negroes as switchboard operators. Ofiily rocefitly. the Chicago- Urban league, through its industrial secretary, L. Virgil Williams, has been negotiating with the company for the employment of Negro phone operators. Sele«|ion of applications were made from a “file of recent appli■ations for telephone operators’ po sitions from Nbgro operators who ire qualified," the company disclos ed. "Those selected were between 18 and 25 years of a".e. were high -chool graduates having good voice characteristics and diction, and who met the high health and physi. '•al standards of the company.” The numbes selected for the special training course was not revealed, but the company did say

that it has on hand many more applications from which to fill its requirements for the next several months. The company’s action is far from establishing a precedent, since Negro girls have been employed in similar capacities in Michigan, New York. New Jersey, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Ohio, Maryland and Minnesota. Heretofore, the Illinois company employed Negroes as installers, repairmen, collectors, service workers, clerks and office workers.

Charges Race Hate To Chicago Racial Relations Group > CHICAGO (ANU) '— The Rosemoor Community association, an organization of white property

owners of Chicago’s far south side, last week wrote to Mayor Martin H. Kennelly demanding that his Commission on Human Relations be abolished. The association charged that the commission has been ‘fostering racial hatred” instead of developing good will between racial and religious groups, and accused the commission of using its office “as a headquarters for zeelots sowing the seeds of unrest and turmoil.” The 700 property owners in the association, according to the sec letary for the group, plan to op pose any appropriation for the commission under the 19-18 city budget. This year the commission has an appropriation of $55,115.
