NOTE: Thl purpose of AA sgrisa is to stfmulate ttoUght on •objects that concern Negroes. The ftuthor Is a staff secretary of the Service Bureau for Education in Human Relations.

1. For 1 the most pert we get our i>xejddces from the society in which we grow up. We do not choose them any more- than we choqse our religion or the kind of clothes -we wear. If each one did his >ewn«thinking there would probably- be less prejudice than these is now. Many , individuals retain the prejudices of their group in order to have standing with the group . . Everyone has a' normal desire to belong to some group and in order to do so one must conform to a great extent to the standards and customs of the group. a 2. It is often said so, since frequently white workers and Negro workers are competitors for the same jobs. In addition many of the workers have had few educational advantages and therefore have strong prejudices. However, that White workers are npt always the enemies of Negro Workers-has been demonstrated more than

once, perhaps never more dramatically than in the Uniting of Negroes and whites in the Southern Tenant Farmers Union, organised two years -ego end. now numbering over 25,000 members. 8. Educators are more and more Advocating that education be realistic—that it prepare children for the actual world in which they are to ^ live. Everyone sooner or later must face his world, and psychologists tell us that adjustments are difficult if children have been sheltered from realities. Since prejudice and discrimination, with their resultant limitations, are realities that most Negroes must eventually face, it is often advised that the Negro child should be prepared for them. However, the preparation must be of the right kind. Certain courses should be. pointed- out not as impossible but as difficult. ~ j- r. • Copyright 1988 ’ ' ’ ’ ’ * ... Inter national Negro Frees -
