The subject of the races of Rusaia, j says Dr. Hrdlicka. seems at first glance very baffling, yet If considered from the viewpoint of anthropology, the problem is simplified and there I are seen to be large areas of racial ! uniformity. The earliest known peoI pling of Russia took place during the | latter paleolithic epoch and the following neolithic times, but a much more important Influx occurred during the latest neolithic and the bronse and iron pariods. proceeding from the ; adjacent regions in Europe and also over Caucasus and from tha great ! steppes of Asia. Dr. Hrdlicka then considers Urn •‘non-Russian • races of European Russia. including the Roles, Llthunians. the Tchouds and Finns, and, the FinnoUgrian tribes of the interior, the Laps and the tfamoyeds, the Tartars, the tribes of.the Caucasus and finally the immigrant Jews and Germans, of which last there were practically 2,004,000 at the beginning of the war. In summing up his studies, the author says: “Leaving aside all details and localised ethnic peculiarities, we find that the racial problems of European as wdlt as of Asiatic Russia, are relatively simples (1) We find over a large portion of the vast territory a thin substratum of Flnno-Ugrlans. who are of western Asiatic origin, and carry with them varying traces of Mongolian admixture. Fesier, auditor of Marion county, the sheriff of the county, and the members of the board of commissioners of Marion county, defendants In a suit filed by Edward A, Strong to prevent the payment of more than 40 cents a day to the sheriff for boarding prisoners, have filed an answer to the cdmplaint in the Shelby circuit court. The suit was brought here from Marlon county on a change
of venue. ✓
For some time the sheriff In Marion county has been paid at the rate of 20 cents a meal, or «0 cents a day for boarding prisoners. Strong seeks to enforce the payment of 40 cents a day as provided by law. The defendants in their answer give a table, which says that the price of food has Increased more than *72 per cent, since the beginning of the world war. They contend that because of the great Increase it is Impossible for the sheriff to feed his prisoners at the
rate of 40 cents a day.
DESTROYERS ON THE WATCH Craft Will Aid Ocean Flyera in Case
of Mishap.
WASHINGTON. April l-Britiah destroyers will co-operate with the American navy In patroling the course to be followed bv American naval seaplanes in the projected flight across the Atlantic ocean next month. From fortv to fifty British ships will be on duty from the Azores tc$ the British ’ isles. American destroyers will patrol the course from St Johns. Newfoundland.. to the Asores. the fifty to sixty of the craft used being stationed at Intervals of le*-'* than 330 miles. Along the greater part of the course there also will be an almost continuous stream of army transports going to and returning from France, and these will form an additional safeguard for the crews of the machines tn event accidents force any of the craft to descend With reasonably good weather, however. the planes could ride on the water while minor repairs were being made to
the motors.
Under present plans there will be five men lu the crew of each of the two or three planes to make the atari. Besides the navigating officer in command, there will be two pitots, a radio operator and a mechanician. Turfer. however, it mav he decided to add an additional
