Just a Little Mistake. When I entered the theater I wa* j wondering how I would get tnstde when (suddenly a reception committee hurried ■ Into the very place I wanted to go. I They were so cordial and 1 was so eom5 piimented thrt It was rad to have to i tell them it was a case of mistaken identity and that I was not Miss Ran-j j kin. Anyway, I was in and I heard her ; make • a good speech, which w as well i {received. She advocated something new In the ( way of newspapers, however. It was •this: That each community should have a newspaper board similar to Its school board, the newspaper to be printed and circulated free, the articles to be written and signed by responsible people in the community, to be passed on by this central board for approval. She said the press would be then public as well as free. But the present method of publishing newspapers Is evidently satisfactory to the w. C. T. U. members, as demonstrated yesterday morning, when Mrs. Busan McWhlrter Ostrom told them In her modrat. unassuming way that if she had 1100,000 to spend for W. C. T. U. work today she would surely spend It with the press. She received great applause. Appeal by Bishop. Bishop McDowell, of the M. E. church, made a strong appeal for temperance and introduced the dignitaries of that church who have been here in conven-

tion.

He then Introduced Clarence True Wilson, of Ohio, whereupon the Ohio delegation cheered and gave a yell that woud shame DePauw students. He said the temperance people were satisfied with legislation up to date but the time is not far distant when even beer would not be manufactured. All Washington is muzsled as far as I can Judge. Whether it is that the American people axe moved by patriotism and intend to stand by the President throughout this war whatever he may decide to do or whether it Is that Mr. Wilson has gained In personal popularity, I can not decide. But even Mrs. Wilson Is accorded new virtues which she did not have this time last year. Then the gossip was that she only liked to swing in a hammock and read novels (Who does not?), but now I hear on all sides that she is an excellent buslnesa woman, aws the brains of the Galt Jewelry Company; that she has a desk of her erwn inside the President’s office and many important papers are referred to her by the President for her careful analysis. All of which reminds me that a New York state M. C. has Just called up the suffrage headquarters to ask why a woman lobbyist

Little Stories of Dally Life “Every Kid Loves a Soldier.” The old saying that “all the world loves a lover” might be changed these military days to "every kid loves a soldier,” or his uniform, at least. Just watch the little boys and girls as a soldier pLses. Those admiring glances would not be bestowed on a “slacker." Here are two cases In point: *Y Jus’ lov ou soders," said three-year-old Charles Ullrich, son of Fred Uilnch, Big Four agent at Shelbyville, as he entwined his arms about the neck of Sergeant Rosa Reed, of Greensburg. Reed, with several Decatur county soldiers. from Camp Taylor, were on the way to Greensburg, by way of Shelbyvillo, and the sergeant after buying a ticket had leaned^up against the railing of the ticket office when the three-year-old hugged him. 9 A second Illustration occurred when Sergeant Reed reached Greensburg on the way to his parents’ home. He was confronted by a tiny soldierly figure that saluted with all the grace and courtesy of a trained soldier, The sergeant exchanged the salute, and then learned the tribute had been paid by six-year-old Henry Jerman, son of Prof. E. J. Jerman. superintendent of Greensburg’s city schools.

Failed to Bring it “Whst is the matter?" asked the mother of a six-year-old girl as she came home almost In tears after her first day in school. *T don’t like the teacher," said th% j little one. "Why, you hardly know her. What has she done to you?" "When I went in she said: ‘You sit here for the present,’ and she never brung It*’’
