continuing it beyond the end of the war. The question of establishing a military policy of universal service has been debated to some extent recently. The impression prevails among many members of the congress, however, that it would be unwise to take up this question now. If the war* is long, d< may become necessary to provide for the registration of new classes which reach the military age of the selective service bill each year and oossiblv also to exempt men now registered but who may pass beyond the maximum age limit before the war ends.

Commenting on President Wilson’s statement regarding single men, he said: “That is merely the President’s view of the matter. Yet the selective conscription law calls for more than single, otherwise ft would not be necessary to go to all the expense and trouble to examine men with dependents, especially married men. An instance was given where a young man and his father had filed affidavit that he was the sole support of aged parents who, it was learned, owned a store and the father had swam 400 yards in a nearby lake and that they ow-ned an automobile in which they took long trips every Sunday. If that man is exempted by the local board, he and his father can expect to spend the next year or two of their lives in federal prison. Government laws can not be tampered with in
that manner.”
