(l>p«$ial to Tlw Indianapolis Nows] PETERSBURG, Ind.. January 1.Hanry Rsuas and three companions went hunting yesterday, armed writh clubs and [ accompanied by dogs. The snow was deep and the rabbits were marooned on isolated spots by the back waters of the Patoka river and other streams. During the day’s hunt the boys bagged 142 rabMts. Another htintsr armed with a shotgun, killed filty-iwo rabbits. Ths hunting laws made to protect the quails have helped also to protect the rabbits,, aa the fftrmers who , prohibit hunting OB their land for the protection of quails hsip to harbor 'thousands of rabbits, which in time become a menace, as they,'; W the" bark offs the trees, in young orchards
George V. CoIBn, sheriff of Marion county, today announced himself as a candidate for Venomination. Sheriff Coffin is *a Republican. “I think I hav-te fulfilled a pledge made to the people of Marlon county when I was a candidate for election," tl)® sheriff I said in his announcement. "1 promised i them a strict enforcement of the law throughout the county and I feel, in view of the constant commendation and lack of complaints which have reached this office, that I have fulfilled my promise. The public may feel assured that in the future the policy which ha.s been adopted and carried out for the first year of my administration of the office of sheriff will be definitely continued, and to their sat- , Isfactlon, On this ground I ask their supi port in the coming campaign and elecI tlon." I Strong Demand for Him. Sheriff Coffin had not considered the [question of asking for a secorjd tdrm, j but there has been a strong demand that j he be a candidate for renomlnatlon. This demand came not only from Republicans throughout the county, but from persons who take an active Interest in clean government, regardless of politics. Included In the support which Coffin will receive is that of a number of ministers, who hold posltlon.s outside of the city of Indidnapolls. Prior to the Coffin administration, they sa>% troublesome •'blind tigers" and resorts were operated In violation of the law and without molestation. Camps were established during the summer months In out-of-the-way places along the rlv^ers and creeks of the county and they flourished despite repeated attempts to< stamp them out. Little or no complaint of this kind was made during the last year. It Is said. Coffin made several “blind tiger” arrests outside of the citv limits and let it be known that they would not be tolerated. As a result the trouble-makers were driven out of the county. Active in Flood Work. Sheriff Coffin first came into prominence as a member of the police department. During the trying flood days of March and April in 1M3, Coffin took charge of much of the relief work of the west side, and his executive ability and genius for organisation won for him the strongest kind of support when he presented himself as a candidate for sheriff in the last campaign. His fine work on the "other side of the river" had much to do with the record vote which was cast for him. He led the successful Republican ticket. The sheriff was one of the men who in.iected new life into the Republican organization whei] It overthrew the old order of Ihing.s in Marlon county at the beginning or the last campaign and since his entrance Into politics he has been recognized as a leader.

SEVEN STATES BID GOOD-BY TO . ' OLD JOHN BARLEYCORN TODAY
If any one has it in his heart to bid liis old friend, John Barleycorn and all of his tipsy relatives a fond farewell today, company is assured for a dusty trip through the year. Eight or nine million people were piled on the water omnibus today whether they wanted to get on or not. Of course a large portion climbed on voluntarily. The eight or nine million are the residents of the sovereign seven states of Colorado, Iowa, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Arkansas and North Carolina, all of which came into the prohibi'eion'column’gtoday - by the operation of various state-wide prohibitory measures enacted either by legislatures, or the people direct. Florida and Alabama had ascended the water wagon earlier in' the year. Now a great deal more than half of the country is legally bone-dust dry; and the movement away from intoxicating liquors, and more especially; away from domination by the saloon through politics, seems only to have begun to get up momentum. Nebraska, California, Michigan, South Dakota,-Vermont and Alaska vote on state-wide prohibition this year, and national prohibition is threatening the liquor interests. Much territory not included in “prohibition states” is dry, by local option, Minnesota practically going dry by that process this year. An analysis shows that the new nStion-wide force that has pushed prohibition in where the temperance forces could not do it, is the resentment of the people to political operations of brewers and saloons. The new laws, which became effective today, will- put out of business more than 3,000 saloons, a large number of breweries, wholesale liquor houses and distilleries.
