SILVER AND GOLD.

f The currency of the country, no matter j what it* form, is now* a gold currency. J Yet there 1* ground for apprehension that : in time* of stress It may be difficult to j maintain this parity. With the stiver-dol- ! lar worth only about S5 rents. It might be that, with a panic on, silver would | be discredited, and there would be a ru.-n for gold. Mr. Shaw sees a danger here j and urges that Congress provide for the ; redemption of silver in gold at the option : of the holder. Of course. as he 1 says, the fact that the Government freely i receives sliver In discharge of debts due to It. is Itself a form of redemption and j operates to maintain the parity between ! the two metals. But with all doubt as to silver removed, there would be ’ lees temptation to hoard gold, and so less demand on th# Treasury for gold. The danger to the Treasury would be lessened rather than increased by the proposed ehange. All our money would be gold, or its unchallenged equivalent, and, except for purpose of export, silver would be available as gold. That is the case S now. to be sure, but with the present * doubt It may not always be the ease. With national bank -notes made payable In gold, no small part of the burden of providing gold both for domestic use and •, .for export might be shifted to the banks. ,v ’ : The argument is thus summed up by

|. A *r Shaw:

There can be no valid reason, legal, economic or equitable, why the Government should not redeem In gold all Its own obligations, whether they be ropre-

Perhaps the National Housewives' Association of Chicago hopes, by abandoning the tise of the word "servant" In connec- ( tion with household employes, to emancipate the employers. It s ti lovely dream, but it ia to be feared that whatever she is called, the threatened withdrawal of the lady help from the kitchen will cause the usual attack of nervous prostration to the mistress of the establishment and the customary cold shivers to the man who pays

PRECIOUS PACKAGES.

A wife got $100,000 damages In a New York court for the death of her husband in the tunnel accident. The suit was for JMO.OOO. It was based on the allegation that the man's life had a cash value to this amount from the fact that he earned $80,000 a year. Already in suits caused by this accident damages of $3J,ouo and $60,000 had been awarded, but $100,600 Is said to be the largest on record. The fact Is well recognized that the lives of men have a cash value based on the earning capacity of the Individual. A g;ent many men carry life insurance of llOO.oon and more, but this fact perhaps rests on another basis, as presumably the Insurance company does not look al the earning capacity of the man as such, bat eon
