The Democratic county committed has given up hope of recovering certain book* and document*, containing information of value to Democrats, which wsfe in the custody of M. Grant Homaday as secretary of the county and city committees. Homaday wa* the chief clerk in the city engineer’s office, and wa* *ent to prison for embeulement, hi* shortage covering a period of four years. After he left an effort wa* made to get the books. Then it wa* learned that he had had them removed after hi* arrest to hi*

house.

Secretary Moore, of the county committee. has tried hard to trace their whereabout*. and ha* tried to get information from Homaday, hut without success. The Democratic committee believe* the bt’okt are in the hand* of Republican*, and that Homaday turned them over to Republicans. The books contained the detailed statistics, some private in their nature, of three campaigns. On* of thee* books contained a list of contributors of campaign funds, and the names of several Federal employes, who have been holding their positions since the McKinley administration besun, were Included. Several mail carriers were on the list, too. it Is said. Becretary Moore, of the Democratic committee, says he knows nothing about the books, but admits that th# committee can not find them. He says they were of importance to no one but the Democratic committee, and that all they contained can be supplied, but that considerable labor will be necessary. Democrats say the books and documents procured the aid of Republicans for reducing his punishment for embleselement. Hornaday’s first attorneys were W. W. Spencer and J. J. Rochford. C. 8. Wiltsle represented him in the Criminal Court. Mr. Wiltsle, who is a Republican, was formerly prosecutor. Wiltsle says he knows nothing of the disposition of any Democratic records by Hornaday. He says he does not believe there was any arrangement made by which Hornaday received any lighter punishment. He say* after Hornaday * sentence he was very anxious to arrange some Important documents which he had at his house, but Wiltsle said he did not know what documents they were. HUNTING FOR THE MADAM. Many Who Paid Monty to Her Are Making Inquirltt. A well-dressed, middle-aged woman, giving her name and address as Madam Fauvette, New York, and her occupation a# fortune-tell-er. trance medium, clairvoyant and medium healer, has left th# Plaza Hotal, In Monument Place, where she had occupied apartments for six weeks, and many persons who paid money to her for "treatment” ar* making Inqulrlm. Two women called at the hotel this morning and asked for Madam Fauvette. They said they had each given her $25 for a course of "treatment.” A man called and told the same story, except that he paid $50, and had made but one visit. Two young women said they had been engaged by the "Madam” to travel with her on a salary of $10 a week each. They paid $5 each for lessons, and called yesterday to find her "out." A poor shop girl paid $18 to have herself and lover "brought together " Madam Fauvette had plenty of money and dressed stylishly. A colored servant girl said she saw (he "Madam" recalva "gobs and oodles" of money.
