PUnola Tom’a Cabin,” “A Cracker Jack,” Comedy and Vaudeville. “Uncle Tom’* Cabin” has undergone man? change, since it wa* first not on the staye decades ago. It has had real live bloodhounds introduced, then two Topsies, then two donkeys, then two Markses, and sow It haa two pugilists—a conception of “Parson” Davies, whose work was witnessed at English’s last night The audience was top-heavy and the territory beyond tfia yellow bridge had a large representation. The interest centered in the sparring ot Peter Jackson and Joe Cboyniki, which was a clever exhibition. The sparring occurred between the first and . second acts. As “Uncle Tom" Jachson does fairly well. Ilia manner is natural and bla emphasis characteristic of his race. His enunciation is rather indistinct, however. He is not as good an actor as Corbett Choynski as the slave-driver, acts veil, ami "barton” Davies as Uie auctioneer leavea the suggestion that he might do well at the business if his under study conld always be relied upon. Accompanying the show is a colored quartet, and Miss Louise Miller, who played the part of “Topay,” introduced a number of songs and dances. “Little EVa,” in the hands of Anni. Laughlin, won much applause. The play will be repeated to-night ana to-mor-
row afternoon and evening. “A Cracker Jack" at the Park.
“A Cracker Jack” is the melodrama running this week at the Park Theater. It is well-named. With one bound it springs from the banks of the Hudson to the wilds of Oklahoma, and it is wild in plot as it is in the characters portrayed. There are a number of strong situations, however, highly sensational at times, while throughout there is a vein of love and comedy which enhances the interest. The •oubrette of the piece is Miss Carrie Ezler, who is unusually bright and attractive in her songs and dames. Her rendition of the old negro melody, “Don’t You Hear Me, Honey," rivals ‘‘Hear Dem Bells,” made famous by the Irvin sisters. The comedians are Mr. Ous C. Weinberg .s sm _ !_ Jr's : 11 * U .i 1 n a A *% » wi ri artrissov*.

the week.
Comedy and Vaudeville at the Empire. The Irwin Bros.’ Comedy and Vaudeville Company is playing this week at the Empire Theater. Two performances are given daily. The combination was warmly welcomed last night. There is little that is . poor in it and very much that is good. The ■peoial feature, include the performances of Hilton, the contortionist; comic songs and parodies by Frank D. Brian, Nellie Forrester and Gilbert Moulton, who call themselves the national trio; Dasnaway and Moulton, triple bar performers, and Harrigan, the juggler. The afterpiece, arranged by the national trio, is better than the common run of curtain-drops. Another feature is the cornet solo playing by Miss Bessie Gilbert, who appeared here some year! ago with the Thomas orchestra. She
is a skillful performer.
WITH THE POLICE. *
If Superintendent Powell answered all the requests made of him to settle family quarrels he would have little else to do. Many people imagine that a word from the ■uperintendent of police ia enough to settle any kind of a disagreement between mao and wife, and some of them ire anferV because the police will not take part for them. The other night a tall young fellow, who looked like a railroad roan, went to see the superintendent, aud told him his troubles. He and his wife could not agree, and he wanted his wife watched., Mr. Powell explained that the police could not engage m
that kind of business.
“Well. I pay taxes and have some rights,”
exclaimed the visitor.
“That’s true, no doubt, but you will have to secure the services of a private detective “WUL eh! Well, I’ll see if the police will do their duty. This matter will here-
ported to the board,^air.”
The Superintendent had a mysterious visitor the other day. He looked knowingly and whispered deeply. Ho explained that he knew where a terrible crime had been committed; in fact, he knew thst the crime was going on all the time, and believed that a detective shonld he put on the track of the man. The man was living a double life. The visitor told such a plausible story that the Superintendent sent a detective to ini vestigate, telling hie visitor to return the following morning. The next day the via-
itor was there bright and early.
“What did you find out?” eagerly he **^|fopnd out that the man you complain ©f ia your father. Do you mean to say you want a detective to shadow your father
about town?”
“Well, ye?; I thought—,
“Yea, I have had a few thonghta*myself since I found out about this matter, and I have not a very high opinion of vou, either. You will have to hire a private detective to ahadow your father. The city force will not
engage in auch business.”

The police havo receivad instruction* to move the afreet-corner loafers that hang areuud the front of hotels apd ogle women who pass. The complaints against these fellows are numerous. Captain Quigley with Sergeants Lowe and Meflord met with a great deal of opposition Saturday afternoon. More than one man refused to move until the officers took him by the arm and led him away. One of the moat obstinate stood at Illinois and Washington streets. He was defiant, and in a loud voice announced his name and his business, that of
a contractor.
“f own as much of this street as you do,” he exclaimed to Captain Quigley, “and I am not going to move until 1 get ready.” “You believe ip the enforcement of the laws, uon’t yon?" “V es. 1 do, but 1 am not goia* to move

"Of course you do not, but if you are
permitted to stand here, the other fellows will do the same and respectable women
and girls are subjected to insult.” "Captain, you arc right;” and the man
moved np the street and waited for his ear.
One of the piacet about which there are
many complaints is at Washington and Meridiau streets. One or two young fellows who imagined they own a large alice of the universe became very abusive, but Sergeant Metford ataned to cell the wagon and then
they buriediy got away.
? Patrons of the Park Tin ater complain of the dude “statues’* end mashers that line up in Washington street, from Illinois to -Tennessee. These fellows are of all classes, all conditions and colors. The police got after them Saturday afternoon, and for once a woman without an escort could walk
free from embarfassment. 'owell has issued order* to

A Tax Collector Reckons Without His Guest, As ’Twer®.
Mono ANTON, P»„ January 30.—A thrilling Story of robbery and murder ia told bore by Manson Reynolds, of Union county. William Jones, tax collector of Union county, received a notification from Controller-General Wright to close up hia belated returns. Sunday night a peddler called at the residence of the tax collector and asked for a night's lodging. He was taken in. About two hours after a negro made hia entrance into the house, and. covering the peddler, ordered him to give up hia i;oods, which he did. The robber then turned on Mrs. Jones, and ordered her to bring out the tax money. ’"i ” * “— r - 1 -- - 1 -- the the discovered that the dead body was that of tax collector Jones, who had adopted this scheme of keeping the county’s money, WING TAKES A FLIGHT.
Excitement In the Cougrhlln Case Caused by a Charge of Espionage.
Chicago, January 30.—Ex-Judge Wing, of counsel for the defense, created a sensation in the Couglin ease yesterday by asking that the jnry be excused, and demanding that the prosecutor take the stand. A ttorney Wine then charged that the prosecution has set detective* to shadowing him and those who called at his office. “This is America, not Russia,” Judge Wing shouted, “and such method* should be severely punished. Captain Seheuttler is at least partially re.-poneible for thi* shadowing and I want Mr. Rottum to swear as to his connection with the matter.” Mr. Bottom denied all knowledge of snch use of detectives, and Judge Wing then demanded that Captain Scbuettler be called to account. WORK AND SOCIETY. The Two-Fold Strain on Delicate Women. Unerring Symptoms of Nervous Weakness and Over Fatigue—The Yalne of Paine’s Celery Compound, the Eemedy That Makes People Well.
In arecent number olthcGuoen, Mis. Lynn | J-help», of Dfiitmocth College, two women In Lynton writes, evidently Irom experience, of | the be»t woot/.y fn Dexter, Mich., (whose por-
the danger of overwork and too greet nerve and mental pressure among dei.ca o women. “Only the exceptionaLy strong,” apys Mrs. Lynton, ‘-caa stand the strain of the two-lold
liie of w rk and sociity.”
Social life, instead of bringing refreshment, brings a redoubling of anxieties and so muoh more to think of and so much more to arrange and manage. There are a thousand cares that the mother, the hot t ss and the carelul housekeeper can not share with others. With more pretentious living, larger families, and with every fresh social duty comes the increase of nervous strain and a step nearer the breaking-down point. The great share oi this pressure comes upon the anxious mistress of the household. She becomes irritable and hysterical. The most insignificant little t-ouble looms large and weighs heavyall because she is breaking down, and the hervous strain is too much for her. She can noteat, nor sleep, nor rest, nor work; her nervous or)ailzation has gone all to pieces. Of the thousands of such cases that Paine's celery compound has cured, of the thousand of people in all classes of society who owe there present health and strength to this wonderful ccmpound, first prescribed by Prof.
Halts are given a ore), tell their friends of
the virtue of the retreiy.
Mr.-. Belle Redman writes: “I can certainly speak in favor of Paine’a celery compound. I have doctored more or leaa lor about three years-with our best doctor, and t led several remedies, with no benefit. Last summer I was advised to take Paine’s celery compound. I have taken about three or four bottles, and my sister, Allie Bennett, haa taken it, too, about the same number of lottlea, dating the
same length of time.
“I felt all run down my liver troubled me, I had awful headaches and very bad periods of sickren that would leave me weak and pale and d scouraged. Now I have improved in looks and flesh, and I have gained in many wave through the merits of Paine’s celery compound, and shall u *e it, as I am too young to be sick. I am twenty-five years old.” Mrs. Rodman, her sister, ai d the little girl are certainly healthy now, as the above pho-
tograph shows.
From all over the country ccme, every week, hundred of similar testimonials, unsolicted. If one is weak or "run down,” she should use Paine’s celery compound. If makes people well. ‘
