and their children are always clean

A BRETON SECOND STOBT We will add any amount of complication and expense to our homes, much of which oounts for nothing. -It complicates all domestic movements, is inartistic, and adds nothing to our comfort. At the same time we have in America streets and roadways,. alleys, and the unused parts' of cities, iu a condition that a BrHon peasant would feel a disgrace. We have people iu our cities who growl at a few dollars extra taxation, and who yat spend hundreds and thousands of dollars in ugly, inartistic decorations, build olumtv, meaningless appendages to their houses, complicate their living in every wav, adding nothing to their comfort or artistic enjoyment. Here in a town eight miles removed from a railroad, where men consider themselves fortunate if they can earn 30 cento a day by working sixteen Doun, and where bread and meat cost more than with us, we see them sweeping and cleaning every street until there is not a scrap of paper or a bit of dirt or rubbish of any kina visible. In a little fishing village of six hundred inbkbitanto, which is located twenty-five miles from a railroad, there is not a street or roadway which is not cleaner than was the best street in Indianapolis, as I last saw it. In certain respect* we are as far removed from high civilization as are these peasants in others. We have gone to an extreme of civilization in our homes; they have surpassed us in the care of the exterior—the streets, alleys and roadways. Theirs are clean and ours are dirty. Louis H. Gibson.
