There Is reported to be much concern among the colored people of the city regarding the threatened negro exodus from the south, alleged to have been precipitated by the democratic victory. It is the general opinion that. If they come they can find homes in the country and prove beneficial aa agriculturalists, but tha' there Is little room for them In the cities. Rev. Mr. Roberts, of the Vermont street A- M. E. church, Is the only colored minister who thinks there Is no danger of an exodus. He believes the feeling of the democratic party In the south toward the black man la better than It baa been heretofore, aud aa that party will try to remain In power It will ba gentle and endeavor to act as not to antagonize the colored man. Tbere are some Inducements for the colored man ta emigrate to the eouthweet, to Arkacsia and Texas, he says, and It mav be they will go there tn audicltnt numbers to control local politics and be able to get representation tncongres atonal districts He ta opposed to anything that looks Uke colon'zatlon of the negro.*

WILL GO SLOW* Got. CleTfUnd Ontliiei His Parpoui lo a Fmnd—“Be Snrr You're Bight and then Go Ahead.’’ Washington, Dtcembar 5.—A member of congress who has recently viaited Governor Cleveland re porta him as having spoken as follows:"! intend to resign on the CJiof January. As Lieutenant Governor Hill will administer the executive ofllee for next 5 e i r , I have turned the writing of the message over to him. After laying down the duties of governor, I shall listen to whatever my democratic friends have to say. I shall divide my time between Albany and Bullaio until the day arrives to go to Washington. I Intend to give due consideration to the counsel of our party friends. It may te when I enter the presidential ofllee some things may not move as fast as some democrats wish, but I think It will be better to bo alow and be sure. We cannot hope to avoid mistakes, but If we proceed slowly we will make fewer mistakes than if we go with a rush.” The member of congress with whom Mr. Cleveland talked sa>s the governor will become president without any ambition for a second term, that he holds to the single term principle laid down In his letter of acceptance, and declared his great object Is to so administer the government as to lay the foundation of long continued democratic rule. teMU To Be a Working Sesaton. Mr. Butckner says the banking and currency committee will try to pass through the house some bill to secure the national bank system and avert financial depression. He expects to meet with opposition, but says something must be done. Whatever action Is taken, however, will have to be before the 15tb, for after that time It will be too late to get a day assigned. The Interstate commerce DU! will, possibly, not occupy more than two days. Mr. Cobb will make an effort to pass some additional land grant forfeiture bills. Toronto, Ont, December 5 —A sneclal from Quebec to the Globe says it Is understood that a memorial presented to Lieutenant Governor Mason making certain gr ve charges against tbe membership of the present cabinet affects two ministers, Secretary Blanchet and Treasurer Robertson. Secretary Bianchet Is accused of having sold certain mining lands in Beauce, belonging to the late Senator DeFry, representing them be his own property. The purchaser was a New York broker. He Is also accused of having, during the^laet session ol the legislature, written a letter to the manager ot tbe Canada gold mining company, threatening to prevent a private bill of the company’s from passing unless certain mining lands were made over to him. The accusation against Treasurer Robertson Is that he borrowed for the province, when treasurer under the Chapleau government, a large sum of money from an eastern township bank for which he charged the province six per cent., while In reamy he was only paying the bank five per cent. Government papers deny the charges and say they were Instigated by a discharged employe. Strange Bobbery. Salem, Ky., December 5.—Livingston county is enjoying a sensation of the first maeunude. Rev. THE M1CABAGUAN CANAL. Some of the Alleged I'lwritten History Id Regard to the Project. San Francisco, Cal, December 5.—William L. Merry, one of the chief promoters of the Nicaraguan canal scheme, gives some Interesting facts not heretofore generally known. Merry, with Rear Admiral Ammen and Civil Engineer Moneca!, had obtained concessions from five Central American Republics to construct a canal, by which said republics guaranteed 3 per cent, yearly on $53,000,000, provided Merry and his associates, could obtain a similar guarantee on $22,000,000 additional required, either from the United States or by other means. About two years ago Ammen went to Washington and saw Frellnghuysen. The latter stated that the government could not countenance a private enterprise, as the state department was negotiating with tbe republics with a similar object in view for the United States government. Merry and his associates did not lose courage, but succeeded in getting backing of New York, and San Francisco capital, and Ammen, as president of the company, was In the very act of signing the agreement with a construction syndicate when a messenger brought him news of tbe failure of the Marine bank upon which the company chiefly relied for its eastern backing. The scheme subsided and the cou cession expired September 30 last through default of Merry and the company. Tbe appropriation asked for by Freilrghujsen, a quarter of a million of dollars, was really to enable the government to pay the necessary expenses engendered by tbe negotiations. The senate was aware ol ihe purpose for which It was Ict ended, and the commute ot tbe House on foreign affairs and on appropriations were informed ot its purpese, and the bouse refused to grant the sum. The state department, it appears, had been successful In its negotiations, although Merry declares that Nicaragua has not ceded any sovereign rights in Its territory. He anticipates it will be one of the most momen'ous questions with which the next congress will have to deal, as the concession granted conflicts with the Clayton-Bulwer treaty. Merry takes his defeat good-naturedly, although It has been his one object in view for the last twenty years to build an Interocean 1c canal. CONDENSED NEWS.
