vice la this state.

This, from the Now York Boa. which has been so ardently and conspicuously an opponent of civil eerrioe reform, ia significant. It ahowa how the Mtabliahmeat of n principlesven into slender opportunity for notion as the civil aerrioe law give* for the principle of that reform, poshes away antagonism and brings about acquiescence aa a matter of coarse. Thus will It bo with tariff reform.

Tha Greeaeastle Banner complains that the amount required to secure Mr. De Pnuw’s donation to “Anbury university,” and convert it into “De Panw nniversIty," has not been half subscribed yet. It is pemibie that a good many members of the denomlnatloa to which Ash ary belongs may net ears to pay heavUy to have the name changed after aa honored existence of nearly hnlf a century, even for the very great advantage of lb. De Pauw’s liberal endowment. Uaeouple the subscription froaa the change—end Mr. De Pnnw, it is enid, does aot make it a condition of his gift—aad see how toot will work. Mobs conspiracy revelations are madeia Ireland. By tha confession of one of them then was a murderous organization in January of last year for the purpose of MlHng landlords, agents and spies. Tha loeal leader named Maolaaraoy, introduood to the members a stranger from Dublin, who Mid ho had toarelod through other oountrice and formed sodoties. He also said the members might have to go to various parts of Ireland, and evea to Englaad, to aheot landlords and ageato. Ha aamad the now society the laviacibles or VigW bate. This group of ooeieties, the report further states, is implloated in nina of the atoat notorious mardora ever committed ia teohnd. This oeafearioa oonplM the land league oicMr to ertmo than any yot It la to bo roeoived with great caution. It is toe Indirect. The informhr puts it that aacttar man intoedneed a stranger, and that tha stranger said the land league furnished the money. All which may bo true, sad yet nothing be proven. ‘ ■»-- Db. ha is prebably m good antherity as say of the judges. He Mys that by all precedent one of the iadietMento should tern boon quashed and hapeetaut testimony, throwing Ight on tee whole eacc, m he admits ia another place, and possibly vital to aa intelligent and just verdict, should be excluded, net becauae it didn't go itraifht to tee point of tho prisoner's gnltt or iaaosoaoe, ter bo admits that it did ar might, but boeauM it was aot aeeording to rule and precedent. Here he presents, sharply defined, the fatal de* fact of criminal jurisprudence. The end is saerifieed to the mesas, tee result to the proecM, the community's peace sad safety to tho integrity of forms and methods. To ths thorough-bred criminal lawyer, in this country, especially, it ia of far lorn consequence that a villain should be punished than Uai rule should be broken. If a form •f procedure exoludM testimony that would prove guilt, exclude it sad let the ■ooumdrelgo, is the faith tad practice of the erimiaal lawyer everywhere, and ao where eo absolutely as ia .the United States, “Pig Ibon” Kbilky was diaed on his birth-day at Philadelphia last Thursday, by the Uaion League, aud his poct-prudisl uttoranoe wm a “stuaaer.” It has always been said to Mr. Kelley's credit, that, mouth-piece Mho has been for yean of rich nags, yet he remains a poor man, sad is personally honest. So much can hardly be said of his mental condition. He is in that ohrcaie condition of protectionism, where, drives constantly to attempt e reconciliation of facts with sentiment, one is led evea to a repudiation of the teachings of Christianity, relgating them to the starch and water domain of the Sunday school, aa wholly unfitted for the “blood end iron” rule of this robust work-a-dny world. Mr. Kelley for instance, assumed that we had free trade ia I860 and then assumed that the war and every element of tho oenatry’s aggrandizement since was dne to “protection.'* Then of course the improvement ia steam navigation, Bessemer's discovery, the Irish immigration caused by the potato famine which sprang from free trade and the German immigration caused in some other way by free trade, were all dne to the adoption of a highly protective policy by this county! Well, of course you can't head off a man who can manufacture such beliefs as that. Among other things he said, that ns n result of protection, we export now "less than 10 per cent, of our cereal productions. Oar mining and manufacturing population furnish n home market for 90 per cent,” As the New York Times remarks, “90 per seat of our cereal productions for the census year 1880 would be 2,430,000,000 bushels, and mT there were in that year bat ^37,112 persons engaged in manufacturing! mechanical, and mining occupations, enoh of them must have consumed the enormous quantity of 633 bushels of cereals in the year, or nearly two buahels every day.” Just so! * It must be so! Mr. Kelley Mys it£He says further: “Saoall, however, m is the percentage of our export, it has sufficed to destroy the agricultural value of the farms of the British islands.” Hear the man exult at the misery which protection has brought to somebody else! The old heathen idea that if you hurt Mine one else you are helping yourself, the idea that Jesus Christ combatted so vehemently. Were we wrong ia saying that protoetionism led to a repudiation of Christianity? Proteotionism is distinctly barbarizing and demoralizing in its teachings. Mot Bo Very Crazy. • [Texas tufting*.)
