OBITUARY. Death of a Piou«er EOncator, Milwavkkk, June 10.—Prof. Milo P. Jewett, of tne wholesa'e t-otiee firm of Jewett & Sperman, aud the nrst president of Vesssr college, died here last night, aged seventy-feut^rears. Professor Jewett was the pioneer o: special education for woman in America, and was the actual founder of Vassar, as well as its first president. He was a native of St. Johnsbury, Vermont, end was born on the 27 h day of April, 1808. He was the sou of Calvin Jnwett and Sallie Parker, both of whom were highly educated people, and possessed ot literary tastes. Professor Jewett received hut preparat’ve education At Bradfoid (Vermont) academy, and in 1828 graduated from Dartmouth college. The next few years be spent in Holmes’s academy, Plymouth, New Hampshire, as principal: studying law with Hon. Josiah tjuincy; attending Andover Theological seminary; and, upon invitation of Josiah Holbrook, of Boston, lecturing on common schools in New Hampshire, Maesachusetts and Connecticut. His work produced the happiest results, ami his addresses on these subjects are believed to have been the first of a popular nature delivered in the United Nunes. Through J. Orville Taylor, a fellow siudent of Professor Jewett’s, who became interested in the matter, a movement was inaugurated in New York City that resulted in the present common school system iu the Empire state. Mr. Jewett’s success induced him to abandon tha idea of entering the ministry, and accept an appointment aa one of the first professors in Vassar college. Before entering U|>on bis duties he spent several months among the Congregational churches of New England soliciting college funds, basing his plea upon “The perils which threaten our civil and religious liberties from the progress of Roman Catholicism in the Mississippi valley.” He was the first to second Mr. Vassar in the noble work, planned and organized the college, and was chosen its first president. At the trustees’ request he visited Europe, spending eight months in visiting the universities, libraries, art galleries, &c., in all the principal cities of Great Britain and the continent. Two years later he resigned the college presidency, and in 1867 went to Milwaukee. A Canadlau Politician. Mysterious Foundering «f a Vessel nt Sea. New York, June 10.—News hna re.uited here of the mysterious foundering at set of tire British ship Pelredo, on Mar 8, about twenty miles northeast of Porto Sarto, one of the Madeira islands. Thevestel was from Rio Janeiro for Glasgow, and the circumstances attending the loss show how weak may be a British built steamship. The Peredo was au iron vessel, of 1,029 tons, gross register, built at West Hartlepool, England, in 1872: hence, she could not be termed an old vessel. From the statements of twenty-two of the crew who were saved, out of a total of twenty-six, it appears that in a moderate head of sea, she cracked amidships, her decks started up; and she foundered in two minutes afterward. Fifteen of the crew managed to save themselves in one of the boats; seven others were saved by clinging to some of the wreckage, and four were drowned. American Meoical Association. Washington, June 10.—The pending appropriation bill for the improvement of rivers and harbors is the largest ever reported by a committee of the house of representatives. It calls for nearly $17,oOf),000. Amendments wiil lie oflered in the senate increasing the amount to more than $22,000,000, which is nearly double the sum appropria*ed for the present fiscal year. In 1881 the expenditure for the purpose was $8,900,000; in 1880, $9,-500,000; in 1879, $8,200,000. There was no appropriation iu 1878; in 1877 the amount was $5,015,000; in 1876, $6,600,000; in 1875, $5 200,000; in 1874, $6,100,000; in 1873, *5,500,000; iu 1672, $1,400,000; in 1871, $3,945,000; in 1870. $2,000,000; and in 1869 the bill, which cailed for a large amount, was vetoed by President Grant. As they went around Governor’s Island it was greeted with a national salute of twenty-one guns, which was fired by the exprei-s orders of the secretary of war. The compliment was gracefully acknowledged by the dipping of flags and blowing of steam'whistles. A New Telegraph Liable. St. Louis, June 10 —On t he occasion of President Garrett’s, of the B. & O., recent visit to this city he is reported to have said: “I can tell you now, in confidence, that in the next two months you will see a new cable company organized, witn a capital of $4,(XXi.OOO tor laying a cable from Baltimore to English soil. We have the money pledged, and when ready for business will charge a uniform rate of 50 cents a word. AN INDIANA PARTY Found In Ue Brookfield Bank Robbers —The Tnle of a Pretty Miss. Brookfield, Mo., June 10.-A special train with the bank robbers, in charge of Marshal McArthur and fifty men, arrived here at 1:50 this morning. A great crowd received them, bnt no trouble ensued. The prisoners were identified: three, aa Frank Albert and Fred Mason, brothers formerly of this county; the otner is evidently a new comer. Frank is tall, dark and brawny; Fred, shorter and fairer; Albert is tall and hard-looking. All are rough looking cases. Frank Mason’s wife has gone this morning under escort to recover a bag of gold coin, about $1,400, which she savs she hid under He floor of her house. The four prisoners M ere taken to Linneus, the county seat, thte morning, the circuit court being in session. The prisoners are reticent, and say nothing of their past life. They agree in saying that two of them are _ from Indiana. A worn m who is young and pretty, aud devoted to 1 rank, says she was recently from EUebery, Indiana, and only come to Missouri five weeks ago. She is keen and cool, as are the men, and, no doubt, is privy to their plans. It is believed they will plead guilty. A HORRIBLE DEED. Am In«aue Woman Kills Her Four Children and Herself—Grotesque Preparations. Chicago, June 10.—Caspar Sevbolt is a ba.ter, and works at night. When he left home, last evening, his wife began preparations for a horrible deed. They had four children, aged twelve, seven, and two and one-half years, and a baby four months old. She dressed them in fresh, white clothes, with bright ribbons, gave them strychnine, aud when they died laid them out carefully with flowers in theirhands, and all thesurroundings made as beautiful ns possible. RAILROAD NEWS. A New Combination after tbe I. & St. L.—Revival of Hi? Old Continental Freight Line Scheme. The sale of the Indianapolis & St. Louis railroad, carrying with it a lease of the St. Louis, Alton & Terre Haute road, ou the 28th inst., is attracting considerable attention, and the indications are that the bidding will be very spirited. The latest entry in the field, is a combination consisting of the Erie^New York, Chicago & St. Louis, and Indiana, Bloomington & Western. The objects to be gained by this joint proprietorship are extensive and important, aad tbe Pennsylvania and Bee Line will find no ordinary competitors in the struggle for posuession. The primary plan of the Nickel Plate people is to secure a through line to St. Louis In connection with the New York, Chicago & St. Louis. This will be done by way of the Nickel Plate from Buffalo to Fostoria, thence over the Lake Erie A Western, which is part of the Senev system, to Mnncie ; and by Duilding a line, from Mnncie to a point on the western extension of the L. B. A W. near Indianapolis, which has long been contemplated, thence from Indianapolis to St. Louis over the I. & St. L. The Indiana, Bloomington & Western comes in to secure a Cincinnati connection over the Cincinnati, Hamilton A Indianapolis. The Erie can use the I. A St. L. also, as a St. Louis line, in connection with the C., H. A L It will require$8,000,000 to reimburse the Pennsylvania and Bee Line interests for their investment in the L A St. L., and at least that much will be needed to buy it away from them; more, probably, will not secure it The directors of the I. A St. L. held a conference at Cleveland, a day or two ago, at which it is believed an agreement wan reached to buy in the road by its present owners, and they certainly can afford to pay more lor it than any other party. In pursuance of this conference, Receiver Devereox to-day filed a petition before Gresham asking leave to borrow $150,00$ to pay off claims for labor and material now outstanding. The petition is endorsed by the Bee Line and Fennsylvania attorneys. This is taken as an indication of a change of heart by the Pennsylvania people, who have heretofore resisted all efforts of the receiver to borrow money, besides refusing for more than a year to pay its proportion of expenses of the road, and as an indication that the two owners have arrived at an amicable understandingin regard to its future. The old Continental railroad scheme, which first appeared nearly twenty years ago as an applicant for government assistance, has not died out, but is under headwav as a private enterprise backed largely by foreign capital. This trunk line in its magnitude is stupendous. It will be double track, steel rail, from New York to the Missouri river, striking, probaibly, Council Blufis. It will be an air line and is shorter to every important point than any present road. To Pittsburg from New York the shortest line is 444 miles, the continental will be bnt 383; to Cincinnati, shortest old line, 759; Continental (and connections) 695; Indianan , lis, shortest, 827; Continental, 640; Council Bluffs, shortest, 1,347; Continental 1,224. Sixty millions in capital, it is said, i ro t.i 7, and ———. — —— - great steamship bne for European shipment. Docks on both aides of the Atlantic are already secured. The main line will pass thirty miles north of this city, and an Indianapolis contractor, who is interested in its consti notion, goes to New York tonight to meet the projectors of the enterprise. General Manager Henderson, of.the I. B A W., returned from Ohio last night. He says the Springfield extension gives promise of a large busmen. The first excursion over the twenty-five miles between Troy aud Springfield was run into the Utterplace yesterday, hauling 450 pa««engers, ninety-five of whom were picked up at cross roads.
