Batlroad'Matter*. The committee on railroads report that, after a survey of the premises by the civil engineer, the Terre Haute and Indianapolis and IndianapoUa, Cincinnati aqd Lafayette railroads do not occupy that part of Louisiana street to which the ordinance permitting Ibeir construction confines them. They klso reperted in favor of ordering the street railroad company to build the following line, alter the extension of the College avenue line to Ninth street: From Illinois street east on South to Delaware, south to McCarty, and thecce east to a point between New Jersey and East This matter was laid over for two weeks, after a faint inquiry as to what had become of the extension of the Blake street line, ordered last November. Oa recommendation of the same committee, the judiciary committee and city attorney were instructed to prepare an ordinance requiring the erection of gates, similar to the ones ia use at the Union depot, across the railroad tracks on East Washington street. The Tree Flaad. To the Editor of The IndianapoUa News: I think it is high time that Indianapolis is warned against the tree fiend. He is already abroad, busy at his reckless work. He has done mischief enough; it is time he was suppressed. He has mined more of onr beautiful shade trees than all the storms mat ever struck ut. Tni« rpndhl ©alls hioiscK a trimmer; that may ba bis i)erne, but Le-is simply a tree-but.cher. Hj is too b zy to trim a tree. He is only after u j>,b; the ea iest way to get rhl of unntctSMuy branches is-to cut the whole top off * v one tell 6l .w. That is doiag big work for his mcney. No muter if te has left your hand’ome ru , ’'>le, the giowtb of yt-arp,’an unsightly, naked trunk, your tree ’is etlectnally trimmed. Yes, iu itf>me cases we know it has been effectually killt d; in others it has been shorn of its symmetry and beauty forever. What a pitiful spectacle these amputated trunks of trees present along.our aveuues, feathering out at the top iu a tuft of sprouts; John Foster has happily said they remind us of old age ciii girg to the follies of youth. No other city in the union would tolerate such barbarous ^laughter of its shade trees. We might become in a short time one of the most beautifully shaded cities in the country, if proper care were taken in plan*it?g and trimming and boxing our trees. The first reform should be the arrest of this wicked ▼aijdttl, the tree fiend. A Friend of Treks. HIATK MfcWfe. The Benton Telephone, is the new independent paper at Boswell, by J. II. Whitcomb.
