A Strange Story. [From the New York Herald. •2d.) About half-post twelve o’clock Vrtst^fday afternoon ft gt;ntlbrtifirity appearing German was seen passing slowly along Wall street from the direction of Broadway, and had reached the front of No. 16 when he accosted 1 young man who stood in the doorway, dnd l x>th men passed into the hallway and went ip stairs. The German was not seen again until half-past nine o’clock last night, when he appeared at the New York side of the Btaten Island ferry, near the battery. Mr. Langenbahn confidingly followed his conductor to the upper parf of the house, when mddenly he found things fading from his sight. The police are busy seeking for a trace of the ( adroit thieves'who drugged a man on the busiest street in New York, robbed him and spirited him from the city. ■low”One Husband was Boelatmed. The wickedness of Saratoga and Long Branch has been so thoroughly explained and commented upon, that it is refreshing to learn of the existence of compensating influences which sometimes counteract the gilded enticements of those places. Tjie story is of a husband and wife at Long Branch, the former riven to nightly visits at the lair of Chamberlain's tiger, and the latter affectionately solicitous of his welfare in the encounter with that roy»l beast. Wisely, refraining from curtain lectures, the wife undertook a more audacious and effective means of reform. Attiring herself in her husband’s best broadcloth and tightest pair of dress boots, this “woman who dared’ f followed her dissipated lord to his evening haunt, and, when he was anxiously awaiting the turn of the cards after coppering the ace, blew a cloud of smoke across the table into his face to attract his attention, and calmly put $10 on the king. The story concludes with the rapid and terrified exit of the husband, fol lowed by his successful wife, and the extraction of a promise, on the way home, of fut ure abstinence from thf green table. If this tale is to be credited, we no longer wonder at the determination of Mr. Morrissey to rigorously exclude ladies from his temple of play, for a few such wives would break the bank before
the season is over.
ng I the basis of the integrity of French territory. Alexander II, in the same dispatch, informed the Empress that he had earnestly recommended to the King of Prussia to open negotiations for peace and not insist on the cession of French territory, as the disintegration of France would Be dangerous to the peace of Europe. The prospect of Russian intervention was, however, spoiled by the outbreak of the revolution, on September 4, and the flight of the Empress, which took place a few hoUrt after the dispatch had been received froth the Kmperor -Alexander. On hearing the news that the Republic had been proclaimed the Emperor Alexander withdrew his proffered intervention and notified the King of Prussia that Russia would remain neutral. Jules Favre and all the former members of the government of St. Cloud, who knew of the existence of this dispatch, said to have been found after the flight of the Empress, and withheld from the public by the government of National Defense. These revelations are apparently to be made public with the consent of the Empress Eugenie. The Republicans, principally Jules Favre aud his colleagues, will probably deny the proposed intervention of the Czar, but the truth of the facts related can be completely established.
