To the Editor of the Ximi&naooils Journal: The Journal has seen proper, recently, on several occasions to nso the words "shark," "robber" and others of similar significance in connection with my business and! name. 1 haven't the slightest objeetion to a fair statement being made at any time of my business transactions, but wften snob a gross misstatement as that in relatio'a to the Gray case, in your issue of the 23th, is published, I feel that it is about my time to make m kick. I do not pretend to loan money at 8 per cent, interest, and have never loaned dollar to any man or woman without first fully explaining my terms. Our rates of Interest are high, because the risks wo take are great. They usually belong to the "extra hazardous" class. It has not infrequently been the case that a customer would have a half dozen concurrent mortgages on the same prsperty. and in each case in obtainins the loan would make an aitidavit that the property was free from incumbrance. Again, in many instances, when the loan becomes due neither property nor borrower is to be found. But as to the Gray case, I submit the affidavit of Mrs. Olhe Gray and ask you to give this statement and the ath davit the same publicity you have to the articles attacking me. J. U Kinnu State of Indiana, Marlon county, as.: Mrs.Ollie Gray? being duly sworn.ou her oath says that the statements tnado in the Indianapolis Journal of May 18, In relation to the loans made by her from J. C. Litel personally, and as agent for other parties, is grossly Incurrect; that. Instead of reiving only 45, in their various loans she received $'J3; that Instead of having paid $DS, she has only paid. In the t xo years tne loans have been running. $40; that she has always understood rerfectLf well what Interest or commission she tris to pay, and has nevei leen misled by any statement In retard to the matter made by Mr. LrteL That Mr. Uriel is not now, nor has he at any time, claimed mors from her than was dae under her contract, all of which sbe Is willing and expects to pay; that saa has never employed any attorney to resist or anostiou the validity or Justice of the claim, and oes not Intend to do so. Mus. Olxie Guat. ' peal. Subscribed and sworn to before mt this btu day o June, lb'JJ. Allekt T. Bfck, Notary 1'ublio. Why Not Gratify the People? fo the Tvlitor of the Indianapolis Journau Mr. English, the monument commission er, in an interview with one of your reporters, says the commissioners do not particularly care which way the crowning figure faces. If this be trne. then why not pleasa the vast majority of people in the city who do care. Why stubbornly stand out against public opinions. MaIUOX. Ij Dixx apo lis June 9. Charch Peopio and the Fair. New York Independent. What should be the attitude of Christian men and women toward this international fairf They have been strongly advised to boycott it, to remove their exhibits lrom the grounds and to refrain from visiting it. We have never believed that such a movement could be successfully conducted. Wo have uot advocated it nnd shall not do bo now. The fair ought not, in our judgment, to be condemned because it has been opened to the publio on Sundays. It is legitimately open six days in the week. It is a legitimate fair six days In the week. If any have lost interest in it because it is open seven days lusted of six. and do not want to visit it, well and good. Let them etav away. Let every man be fully pe rbuaded in his own mind as to whether ht shall go cr not go. We can see no wrocg in visiting thf fair on any week day. We do not believe atiy good can come from advising Christiau people to stay away altogether. The churches ought not to take any such attitude. Let them make their protest fairly and squarely against Sunday opening, as they havt done. I3at for them now to propose a boycott would be unwise, unnecessary and illotiicaL Pointer t Story w riters.
