fEESOSAL ASP SOCIETY. All tacitly and personal notes for the Sunday iuutofthe Journal, to secure publication, mutt Is gent to the city tiititir by .t unlay noon.. The week closed with two brilliant parties Friday evening the silver weddiug anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Coffin and the dance given by Mr. and Mrs. VT, II. Morrison to their daughter Grace. Indianapolis never Lad duller holidays than tfcelat, nor a gayer Lent than this year. Tha season of "quiet and sackcloth and ashes has not been observed to a great extent, and quite, a number who are generally observers of the season have entertained, but in nearly every instance it was because there were visitors xn the city who could not prolong their stay till after Easter. Now that Easter is hero even more entertaining will be done, a nnraber of receptions and parties having been already planned. The Social Trust, alter" a long period of quiescence, "will have an elegant party at MissAyres'a in about -a fortnight, 'the children will Cive some kind of a dinner or banquet before many days, and invitations are ont ai:d in preparation for some of the weddings "which have been whispered about The first large wedding will be that of 21 iss Virginia E. Cooper, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. CooDr, and Hon. J. M. Wiley, of Buffalo, N. Y. The marriage will take place at Tabernacle Church, Wednesday afternoon, the ltith iusL, at 5 o'clock. A recention and dinner will follow, at- - the- - family residence. No. 400 2orth Meridian street, and from 8 till 11 there will be a large reception. It is aaidthat Mr. Wiley and his bride will go to Europe on their wedding journey, and "be gone a year. There are a largo number of invitations ont for the church, and accompanying each is a card of admission to tlje ceremony, a custom which is rarely observed, -bat should be generally it the family desires any degree of privacy. It is always the case here, and presnmablv it is invery other city, that noon the orcasion of a church wedding, people feel at liberty to go whether they have invitations or iMtf-'A. wedding is a very fascinating ceremony. . Every one wants to see it; to bee the hridu, her costume, the groom, the attendants, the mode of procedure, the decorations, the family and their best clothes, the relativesuud guests. The enrioity which all this excites willdrawpeople to a church wedding who would scorn to go to any other place whero they were Dot bidden. A couple were to bo married at St. John's Cathedral, several months ago. and desired to Issue cards of admittance, but the priest would not allow it, for the reason that if the church was for the public, so one should be deprived of any service whatever that should take place there. In protestant denominations the minister is not consulted upon such matters, and the families do as they please. A church wedding is, to a considerable extent, a public affair, and yet, a marriage ceremony should h'Ae a certain privacy, and the only way on account of people's curionsity one can secure it is not only to have admission cards, bnt demand their presentation at the church door, tome people are f,o constituted (those not invited are meant) that they would not seriously object to saying to the door-keeper, "I left my card at home," in order to get in. It once happened hzre, when snch cards were enclosed in the invitation, that a person not invited desired ery much to go, and went to a friend, who was a friend of another lady who wa i invited. The second lady was percuaded. much against her will, to go to the one invited and ask for a card, so that the first lady mi stb t attend the weddinjr. The earn thing was done for a party once and the persons in both instances were on hand bright and early, and seemingly enjoyed their entertainments tfreatly. Hostesses have a very good opportunity of seeing and judging people, whether they are gueata ia the house or guests at a party. Personal Mention Merrick E. Vinton, of St. Paul, Is in the city. Mr. O.
