Xewsfrom the .47ny.Jut at this time when we are expecting news from the active operations of Gen. Taylor, there is beginning to be a feverish anxiety in the public mind to hear. Rut we have nothing later. The notes of preparation for a more decisive action reaches from Washington. It is stated that all the volunteers raised in our eastern and northern Stales last
summer have been ordered to Tampieo in hot haste. Pi eparaiions are also on fool
lor more active operations w ith our Navy. Tho Mexicans have been insultingly ask. ing us "when w ill the ' ar begin?" launting us for lhe tardiness of the action of our Navy. But if w e rightly understand present indications, we think they will soon find out when the war will commence. If the President had prosecuted the w ar as he should all would have been sei tied before this time. Rut he has acted like a father who spoils all his children by bad government. He whips a litile, then the milk of of human kindness, prevailing, he coaxes a little. Then again whips. But

there is considerable business :n ccuit I reckon the lawyers will do it all up &roir;i. The river is getting remarkab'y low a number of steam and flat boats are hanging on the bars above here. The mail boats still pass, I suppose because their pilots are more perfectly acquainted with lhe channel.
The Sons of Temperance are prospering in this city beyond any Division in the Slate. ; No 8" now numbers more than 130 and from C to 12 are initiated every night. A charter for anoihei Division has been applied for, and I suppose as soon as ilNo 8" gets into their new room there will
be two or three more charters asked for. Much good has already been accomplish ed. Many w ho w ere on the very borders of destruction have become staunch 1 Sons of Temperance." Their families now show that their head and supporter is a sober and industrious man. 'Mort might be said on this subject than miglit be prudent at this lime. But the cause will yo on in spite of the pigmy opposition of a few clerical bigots who are found even preaching
whole sent ons against the Sons of Temp erance. This is a dirty work, and the day will come when they will be ashamed of il. But I must stop you shall hear from again when I look over the noble farms of the Statesman of Ashland. Till ihen Adieu, PELEG.
