The Demonetization of SilverThe ludianapols News. The Ncwb lias railed attention to the fact that tho advocate* of Lite remouetizatiou of silver place it on the ground of thorough dishonesty. They insist that its demonetization was a great wrong to the debtor class, and to the (lovernment as a debtor, because it deprived them of the privilege of paying their debts in the cheaper metal. They insist on its remonetization on the ground that this will restore thin privilege. It is therefore simply a proposition to scale debts— in plain English, to cheat creditor*— and therefore be denounced by all honest people, regardless of any other consideration. And so the News has not scrupled to denounce it. What add* to the thorough dishonesty of the proposition are the utter falsehoods to which its advocates resort in its defense. They allege that in the demonetization of silver the interests of the debtor were sacrificed to those of the creditor, because he was deprived of the privilege of paying his debts in the cheaper money. This is false, for when the coinage bill was passed, dropping the dollar of the fathers from this list this dollar was worth three cents more than the gold dollar. It was therefore the dearer and not the cheaper dollar which was dropped. The cheapening of silver was an after result, not contemplate 1 in the act, and having no relation to the existing rights of debtor or creditor. Again: They allege that this demonetization was accomplished surreptitiously; that nobody knew it was proposed, and that as a hastily and secret act of legislation it ought to be cancelled. But this is just as foreign to truth. The measure was proposed, and the bill was prepared by tin- Comptroller of Currency, Hon. J. J. Knox; it was elaborately explained and advocated in his published reports; it was before Congress for three years; was before a dozen committees; was reported on and debated half a dozen times; passed the House, was amended in the Senate, and again passed the House. In fact it is safe to say that no financial law of the last ^0 years ever received so much legislative consideration. And those who say it was hasty or surreptitious are guilty of inexcusable • ignorance or utter mendacity. Farther, it was considered reported upon favorably and advocated upon the floors of Congress, by men who now denounce it, and who utter these falsehoods concerning it, of whom Win. I). Kelley is a precious specimen. This gentleman had the bill before his committee more than once, himself reported in its fav,or, took the floor in its defense, declared the impracticability of n double standard, stated the value of the silver dollar to he 08, and now he demonstrates himself to be a pestilent demagogue in denouncing his own law, and shouting for more silver and unlimited greenback*.

A Solid South and What it Moons.
Lsifjuotto Jonmr.l.
The South is solidly Democratic, and all the aonccssious the President has made have failed to make any impression upon its ranks. The Hepulilicans, dispirited and disorganized, have abandoned the contest, because it would have been useless to continue a struggle so hopeless—a struggle in which they could neither have a fair expression, and in which, even if successful, they would be defrauded of the fruits of their victory. Thelateeleotion in Georgia, the fraud perpetrated in Beaufort County, South Carolina; the hold and defiant tone of the Southern press; the expulsion of seventeen Republican members of the Soutli Carolina Legislature, and the seating in their stead of Democrats not legally elected—have hut one meaning; that is, to get and retain control of
the State government.
A solid South may be looked upon with some degree of alarm. The fact that the repudiation of State debts lias been almost the first act that has marked the complete restoration of the Democratic power in the Soutli is a sufficient cause to excite serious apprehension. At tho same time while compromising State credit a vigorous effort is in contemplation to obtain appropriations from tho National Treasury for internal improvements. The Texas Pacific Railway, the construction of various canals, the improvent of tin* Mississippi levee, at the expense of the Government, are favorite projects. The refunding of the cotton tax, the payment of the
are other cherished actively pressed if by the Democratic party in getting control of purse. A section that is

La Fayette Journal.
That LaFayettc should so long have been without a public library is a matter of surprise. A public library, comprising a well-selected assortment of books accessible to the public, would be of almost incalculable benetit morally and socially. Many who seek to pass away an idle hour after the business and labor of the day has closed, resort to the gaming or billiard table, where perhaps worse habits 1 may be contracted. Furnished a place where a pleasant hour might be usefully spent in the acquirement of knowledge, the mental energies stimulated into activity, sound morality inculcated, social intercourse held and the amenities of lif" cultivated to a greater extent, would be an inestimable blessing to those who participate, and to the community at large. Mar tin# villa U*pubiionn. In 1774 Lawrence county got rattled over the cry of reform, and elected a sort of hybrid ticket under that delusive banner, by which a few Democrats slipped into office tor the first time since the halcyon days of Jimmy Buchanan. Among those reform Democrats was the county treasurer, who served about eighteen months and died. An investigation into the affairs of the office revealed the fact that in the name of reform, the office was

Mrs. Russell, the temperance worker, was made the recipient of a handsome silver cup, presented her by R. B. William* and John Robbins, two of the blue ribbon boys, on Christinas
day.
A mechanic of this city was offered $8 if he would sign the jdedgo last Monday night, and not drink any on Christmas day, but he declined and got as drunk as a lord before Christinas was over. Farmers are becoming very tired of the mud embargo, and many of them are beginning to realize that bad roads are much more expensive to them than the cost of constructing gravel roads. The Jouriifil received s leller the other day from a student attending an educational institution at a distant point, making the proposition, that if the paper is sent to him one year free, lie would send notes concerning the said institution. Accompanying his proposition was an advertisement worth $10 or $12, which he called “Notes concerning the school ns seen by a Rtinlent.” Well, some people liavo curious ideas concerning newspapers.

While a Chicago and Northwestern box car was being loaded with nitroglycerine at the Jackson mine, near Negauno, Michigan, one morning last week, the mass exploded, instantly killing seven men and demolishing the car. The locomotive was lifted into the air and thrown fifty feet, and landed in a confused heap of wood and iron. After the failure of the late insurrection in Japan, a richly-attired Japanese young lady was found lying dead in a castle moat, with her father’s head in her left hand and a bloody knife in her right. The devoted heroine had cut off her father’s head, at his command, and then killed herself, that the two might not be taken pris-
oners.
Dr. L. B. Woc/lfo!k, of Lexington, Ky., says that the present mild winter vindicates his well-known weather theory that heavy cannonading draws the Artie cunvnts to the place of tiring, taking with them cold weather and great snowfalls, and giving to the other part of the world mild weather and no snow. The cold at the Crimea in 1HM-5 gave to this continent an open winter, and now the bombardment of Plevna is bringing us the same condition of weather as then. —• -4B^Subscribe for tho Ban nek.

pieces have always been exchangeable in France for a gold twenty-franc piece, tho proportion in weight being 15A to I. The five-franc coins are leg'll tender for all debts, public and private, but the smaller pieces for no amount. The white coinage of 1877 was limited to *10,800,000 hy the Latin l niou. The bunk no longer issues notes under too francs. The Government does not appear to contemplate
demonetizing silver.

I he death of Gen. George W. Mc-
Cook in New York recently recalls the services of himself and his brothers in the war of the rebellion. No other family furnished so many distinguished soldiers as the McCook family. There were eight brothers in the war. The oldest, Gen. Alexander McDowell McCook, became a major general, and commanded a division at Shiloh, a corps at Stone River and a corps at Chicamauga. Another brother, Robert L., became a brigadier general anil was killed by rebel guerrillas near Salem, Alabama, in 1802. Brigadier General Daniel McCook, another brother, was killed in the fatal attack on Kenesaw mountain, on the 27th of June, 18(H. Other brothers served also with distinction, and their aged father entered the ten days service when Morgan invaded Ohio and was wounded in the arm in
the fight at Buffington Island. Gencarl Gourko, the Russian’s Sheri-
dan or Custer, who made the flying raid down to Ycni-Saghra last summer, has accomplished another brilliant ten-day campaign in penetrating the Etropol Balkans, a spur of the main range. In summer time it is a twodays trip. Five times that long has been required at this season of the year; numbers of men and animals wore blown from precipices by the wind, and all suffered incredible privations. On the 31st ult., he fought a severe battle, at Tasteson, before securing the Turkish entrenchments. The Russians lost 700 in killed and wounded. The Turks retreated, at nightfall, toward Sofia pursued by cavalry. After a halt for rest anil reorganization, General Gourko re
slimed the advance upon Sofia. John Holden, a surveyor of Ferry
county, Mississippi, has dug up $1)5, 000 in coin. The money was buried during the war by guerrillas, w ho kill-
ed each other off.
Virginia first publicly inaugurated her Governor. It was denounced as a “Yankee innovation,” but submitted to. The old dominion is thinking about, refusing to repudiate her debt. That will be another Yankee innova-
tion.
