THE COLUMBIAN T . LADY'S Sc. GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE. " EDITED BY JOHN INDIAN - , And filled with Contributions from 'i-; the most eminent and accomplish- - - i ; ed writers-of the cnntry. ! THE motives which have led - to tha com- r - mencement of this undertaking may b briefly stated. It ia believed by the proprietor that there is in the United Stales an immense pro- ! vision of literary ability, for which as yet there : is no adequate encouragement, or field ofdis. play: that besides the number of clever andsuccessful writers, whose productions are week lyv and monthly, and annually read with delight bj thousands, there are yet greater numbers coh- -

etantly arriving at maturity of power, who have-

only to appear on the stage oi publication to re

ceive a brilliant award of lame, and that the

powers of those whose1 names are already pro

nounced vriih respect by lips ol wisest censure.

are capableot more and still Higher exertion than

bas yet been called lorth. It is believed, teo.

trial tne demand lor literary production in- this

country; especially in the periodical channel, '

exceeds the supply in a very large proportion.

and that new supplies have only to be presented

of the right quality, and ia the right way, to to-

sure a hearty welcome and profitable reception.

SSo doubt is entertained ot tbe American mind's

ability to sustain' itself certainly on its own r

ground, if not abroad against all the competi

tion that tbe intellect ol other lands : can bnnir

to the encounter; and full assurance ia felt that

among the millions of -American readers there

can be, and is, a cordiaT welcome for all that

American writers can produce of excellent and

interesting'.

" 1 ill health and peace of mind alike are gone"

The nerves of the human body those neces

connect man with external nature are singu

larly prone to have their functious disordered by

an oppressed condition of the stomach; the mm

panded upon the organs of digestion conveying the morbid impression to the Brain. Aud al

though the Head can, undoubtedly, like other or

gans, be the seat of primary -disorder, yet, in the

treat maionty of cases, the uneasy censations

there experienced are symptomatic of disorder

ed Stomach; and, further, there is abundant evidence to prove that crudities in the Stomach

and tsowels can, in every grade oi numan ex

istence give rise to spasmodic action in every

organ ot the body; and whether we survey it in

fering and distress (in which body and mind al

so participate) BRANDRETH PILLS are con

fidently recommended; as, by combining aro

matic tonic and cleansing properties, they re

move all oppressive accumulations, strengthen

the Stomach, induce a healthy appetite, and im

blood, exert a most beneficial influence in all

cases of disease. Read the following.

DYSPEPSIA CURED. Bennington, Vt. Dec. 5th, 1843.

Dear Sir: I wish you to add my- testimony to the host of others that you have, in favor of your valuable Pills- - In the year 1838, I was attacked with that disagreeable complaint, the Dyspepsia, which so affected me that I could not take the least particle of food, without the most

nnpleasent and uncomfortable sensations in my

chest, head and bowels. My cheBt was so sore

that I could not bear the slightest pressure with

out giving me pain. My health whs most mis

erable; many physicians told me they thought 1

was in the consumption, and that ii 1 did no

give up my business, and change climate, could live but a short time.

1 tried every thing in the shape of medicine.

and consulted the most skilful physicians, but

found no permanent relief. I became discour

aged, cloomy, sad, and sick of life; and proba

bly ere this, should have been in my grave, had I not fell in with your precious medicine. A

friend of mine, who had been sick wiih the

same complaint, advised me to try your pills;

but, having tried most other medicines without

obtaining any relief had but little taith that your dills would be of benefit to me; but at his earn

est solicitation, I procured a box and commeiic ed takinsr them.

The first box produced little or no effect, and

1 began to despond, for fear that your medicine

would prove li lie others l nave taKen; out my

friends argued that one was not a fair trial, and I purchased a sccond, and before I had takeu ihe

whole box I began to experience a change; the

pain in my chest began to be less painful, and

my food did not distress me as much as formerly. I went on taking them until I had taken

six boxes, and my Dyspepsia was gone, and my

expectation of an. early death vanished, and I felt like a "new creature." I was then, and am

healthy man. 1 have never since been
