There waa but one case before the Recorder yeBterday, and that was the case of Mr. Burgencracker, for obstructing the side-walks. The city is remarkably quiet and or derly. ; We doubt that there is another oity the size of onrs where law and or der so universally and uniformly pre vail. - It is death on local sensation items but an honor to the good citizens, Long may it continue so. tayTbe Indianapolis Journal says that owinir- to the large number of houses' built thia season, and the increas in? stringency of the times, there has been a marked abatement of rents with in the past six weeks. Houses that two months ago were rented for $4U per month now bring but $25. There seems to be no decrease in prices ia onr city. t . Major Williams, we learn from, the Warsaw Indianian, is about to construct a street railroad in that place, and that it will be completed by the 1st of May, Mr. Monfort, the Indiana Military Agent, recently deposited in the State Library, at Indianapolis, a pair of Eng lish handcuffs worn by several of our In diana soldiers while prisoners in Libby prison. ' , ' A meeting of the citizens of Frank fort and vicinity was held on Monday last, to take some action on the proposed railroad from Bellefontaine, Ohio to Lafayette, Indiana, in connection with the extension of the Evansviile & Crnwfordsvilie road to Frankfort. - A railroad meeting waa held at Anapolis, Parke county, on the 1st ultimo, to take into consideration the extension of the railroad from Rockville to Attica Fountain county. The Youngstown Ohio, Iron Company are now negotiating with tbe Atlantic Sc Chicago Railroad Company, with a view to the extension of the Attioa road to the point desig nated. Cotton Speculation.' The Indianapolis correspondent of the Cincinnati Commercial says a magnificent cotton swindle, by which Judge Walker, former reading clerk of the National House of Representatives, Judge Hughes, of this State, and certain parties in New York, were diddled out of $20,000, has just leaked out The swindle was concocted by an' ex-rebel Colonel itemed James T, R. Allen, of Paris, Illinois, another young man of that place being his con federate, and was consummated in St. Louis last week. Allen's confederate professed to own fifteen hundred bales of cotton on Red River, which he sold to Walker, receiving $20,000 down, and was to get the balance when the cotton was delivered on the river bank. It ia also alleged that there was a plot to murder Walker, and thua possess themselves of the hundred and eighty tboa sand dollars which ho waa known to have. The plot waa confided to a gam bier in Paris named Whitaett, who blowed it Allen, and his confederates are still at large. ; - ' i1 . -i ' "' Amusements. Bella Golden formed the chief attraction in her impersonation of five characters in Satan ia Paris. The', piece waa well performed all through, and we were sorry that the houae was not crowded. ..To night Bella Golden takes a complimen tary benefit, tendered by the workingmen of Evansviile, and we hope the workingmen will all remember the lib erality of Mr. Golden, and the superior excellence of hia lady, and make it a rousing benefit Let the house be crowded to its utmost capacity. Tbe bill to-night is an attractive one. The Irish drama, "Kate Kearney" will be presented, in which Mrs. Golden will appear as Kate, after which she will sing Geo. P.
