Col. Walker: It is with no ordinary feelings of regret tbat we record the death of our gallant young friend and fellow-townsman. Lieut. Col Will II. illnen. CoJ. Walker, in response to the call of Lta country, in 1801, enlisted in the 25th Regiment, of which be became Adjutant, ia which position be served with credit to himself aud to the full satisfaction !f the officers and men of the regiment, until shortly 'after the fall of Fort T)nelon, when he was forced to resign on account of ill health. During the winter of 1.3-4 he rendered valuable assistance lo Cot. Gorman in recruiting and organizing the 120th Regiment, at Vincennes, where ho acted at Post Adjutant. When the call wan made for 100 days wen, he again responded . prompt" ly, and raised a full Company, of which he was chosen Captain, and upon the organization of the regiment he was recommended for, and commissioned as, Lieut Colonel, in which capacity be did his whole duty, until stricken down by the disuase that has thus speedily proved fatal. lie reached home about a. week ago, very ill, but strong hope! were entertained of his speedy recovery. But ' alas, those fond hopes hate been blasted, and to day the dutiful son, the faithful nnd warm-hearted friend, and brave sol-dii-r lies etruighinDod for the tomb. To his bereaved friend we can t ffer no connotation: their' is agrinf tha., lime aluno can mitigule. But in coming years It will be a matter of pride to see the name of their son and brother inscribed with those who gave their lives fur their country "Una of t' c hw Immortal name That were uol bom to dia."
Fkiiit at Kalkm, Kr. We are informed by a gentleman just from Kentucky, that on Sunday lust, Col. Sjpert, (rebiil) with 1 10 men attacked Col. Jim Wilson, of the 4Mh Ky, (Federal) at Salem, Crittenduu county, Ky., and was handsomely repulsed. Tho Federal force was about equal to that of tho rebels. Tho rebels acknowledge" a loss of threo killed ami six wounded. Among the former was Capt MrGiiodwin. The rebels claim that thny killed 12 of Wilson's men and wonnded a goodly number, but as Wilson fought uador cover while the rebel were exposed, ami from the additional fact that Sy pert retrentid precipitately to Mofganfield, it is naiural to suppose that tho rebel loss was far greater and our loss far less than reported by the rebels. We further learn that on TuesJay Col. A. It. Johnsrm with all his forces in Union county, left xuddecly in the direction of Salem to retrieve the losses of Sypert, aud unless Wilson is heavily reinforced, we fear he will be compelled to retire to safer quarters. I.atku. From a gentleman who arrived from SmithlitnJ yesterday we j learn that Jim Wilson was not in the fif,'ht at Salem. The Federals were commanded by Capt. Wyatt and another captain whos.e name we do not remember, and consisted of only forty men, the baUncn of the command bein out on duly scouting. The rebels, one b nnd red and twenty strong, approached the place about daylight ainl captured the pickets, and then sent in a demand to the little garrison of Federals, who had entrenched themselve in the Court-house, to surrender, anying thftt they bad two hundred men, and that three handled more would reach there in an Lour. Tha auswer returned was, that they would have to fight for the town, when the battle opened t About seven o'clock and continued until eleven, the rebels losing nine men killed outright and two left wonnded so badly as not to. be able to be moved, and from thirty to forty others more or less wounded, including Col. Sypert, who had his rit elSow broken. Capt. Bush, commanding at Sraithliind. bavins learned of the con templated attnek, mounted two hundred men and sent them to the relief of the little band of heroes. They arrived in sight of the town at eleven o'clock, and beinr; seen as they crossed a bill two miles distant, the rebels incontinently fled. The Federals had their horses picketed under range of their guns, and the rebels, beinj unable to. steal them, got into houses and shot some thirty of the horses. The Federal loss was three killed and four or five wounded. feSThe editor of the Independent says that a leading citizen of New York, a nol!? and unspotted lawyer, bas ad- j dressed him in these words: "Tha Fremont meetings in my district are held in the same grog-shop out of which, last snmmerKissncd the . rioters who set fire to my house, the audiences are the some persons, and the speakers are well known as Copperheads." v ' -: SSyA portion of tha 32d Indiana Kepinient will arrive here this evening. Preparations should be made to give
them a fating raoeptiou.

They were struck down while gallantly loading a charge. Capt Kerr was severely wounded while penetrating the eaercy's lines. Tho Tribune's Wahington special says: Chief Knjjineer Latimer, who arrived this morninif from tne fleet off Mobile, reports that when he left, activo preparations were beinjr maile by Furragut for immediate action. Hi? describes Fort Morgan as a brick structure on the Sumter p!in, aud banked np at on additional precaution a iih sand bars, so that the front is conTiiJert d impregnable; hut being once passed, can be readily reduced by an attack from the rear. Farragut having aucceedsd in pnsinj the lort, we shall doubtless hear of its capture and evacuation in a day or two. Otilcia! diepntches are expected from Farragut to-morrow. It was no part of bis plan to captor the city, hut only to relieve a larjrc portion of our fleet which has been stationed there tor six mnntlis past Morris's statement, that the Tecumeb was sunk by Fort Morgan, is totally discredited by the Navy department. The vessel was not likely to engn the fort, and no chance shot could not have sank her. Some correspondent savs: It is generally beiieved in the Army of the Potomac that l-ee has sent Lonsrstreel's corps to Hood's assistance. The Tim-is Washington Fpecial of the 9'h savs: " A Cabinet meeting was held to-day, at which questions of Slate policy of more than ordinary interest and importance were discussed. It is conSdently stated by thoee who are in intimate social and political relations with different members of the Cabinet i that Stanton h:is resigned, and the j President has accepted his rerignation.
