HUMOROUS. Tho New York Leader thinks that Mace is the spice of the prize ring. Miss Vinnie Ream ha? modeled a figure she calls "The West." Will the West submit to be Ream model ed? A gang of laborers on tho strike in England have painted on their banners, "A little earning is a dangerous thing." A doctor boasting at dinner that he cured his own hams, one of his guests remarked: "Well, Doc., I would sooner be your ham than your patient. Tho Danbury News says there is nothing so calculated to call out the deep earnestness of a true woman, and enlist her most faithful devotion, as doing up her back hair. Josh Billings says that "the lion and the lamb may possibly sumtime lay down in this world together for a fu minutes, but when the lion comes to git up, the lamb will be missing." Who can but admire the stoicism of a Devonshire man, who, when on his death bed, the other day, begged his wife and children to have the pro cession start early, so that they might be sure and get home by milking time. The following advice ia from a New York paper: "Press on, youcg man, though you be poor. We knew a youth, who, with only his two hands and a crowbar, opened a jewelry store, and now he is living in a fine stone residence in Sing Sing." A pious but injudicious individual with a set of stencil plates devotes Saturday nights in Waterbury Conn., to posting scriptural questions on the dead walls. Working in the dark, he chooses some queer places. It is apt to destroy the intended effect, says a local paper, to read, "What must I do to be saved?" "Try Dr. Sprague's Female Strengthening Bitters." Youthful generosity was illustrated in Albany, recently. A little boy, smeared all over with molasses, came, running up from the river flourishing a dirty shingle, and screaming at the top of his voice to a comrade: "Oh, Bill! Bill! get as many boys and shingles as you can, for there's a big hogsit of 'lasses busted on the pavement busted, all to smash!l". A servant girl who was sent a day or two ago to a druggist in New York', with a request that he would give her some castor-oil, "disguised as much, as possible," was asked by the druggist if she liked soda water, and replied in the affirmative. The: druggist thereupon gave her a glass strongly flavored with lemon, with muoh oil cast upon the troubled water. Notioing that she lingered after receiving this, the druggist inquired the cause, and was told that she was waiting for the oil. "Oh," replied the man of drugs complacently, "you have taken that." The startled woman gazed at him in dismay a moment, and then exclaimed, "Oh, murder! I wanted it for a man who is .very sick." Correspondence of tbe Troy Times. A Couple or Jour. Printers. I met Mr. Thurlow Weed a day or two since in the office of ono of our leading papers, and I alluded to Mr. James Harper, and mentioned his views as to the ways for a workingman to accquire independence. Mr. Weed reflected a momont and replied: "It was most emphatically the rule of James Harper's whole Ufa to study, not how little he could work but how much. Mr. llarper and I learned our trade more than hfry years ago, of Mr. Seymour, then the leading printer ot thn city, lie was our master, and one of the best men God ever made. He resided at No. 46 John Btreet;and lived directly opposite his plaoe of business. James and I were partners. The advantage of having a good partner, where you ' worked month after month together at the same press,' must be apparent. Often after we had done good day's work, James .Harper would say, 'Thurlow, let's break the back of another token just break.' I would generally reluctantly consent just to break the back of the token, but James would beguile me, or laugh at my oomplaints, and never let me off until the token was completed fair and square It was a custom with us ia eummer to do a fair half day's work before the other boys and men got their breakfast. James and I would meet by appointment in the gray of the morning, aaa go aown io uoou Street. We got the key of the office by tapping on the window, and Mr. Seymour would take it from under his pillow and hand - it to one -of us through an opening in the blind. - A pressman'continued Mr. Weed, "who could do 20 or even 10 per cent, mora work than usual was always sure of a situation. James Harper, Totn Kennedy, (long since dead), and I made the largest bills in tho city. We often earned as muoh as $14 per week liberal wages when you remember that good board could be obtained as low as $10 per month." As Mr. Weed uttered these words hi3 eyes lit up with tbe fires that illumined them in his youth, and there was that expression a moment about his face that showed he was for an instant living over again what were probably tho pleaeantest days of his varied and successful life. In alluding to these "g'.ants among us," let us ask: Does the modern system of labor under the supposed ameliorations of the eight-hour law, trades unions and constant strikes, promise to bring up any representatives from the rank of the toiling millions like the legitimate fruit of the old industries, as represented by Thurlow Weed, James Harper and their coe.n.ia anri associates. ' 'faelf-made TtiPn?" Contrast the bitter spirit of antagonism that now prevails between the employer and the employed, with Thurlow Weed's utterance, with deep emotion in hia voice, speaking of his mooter vhn has been dead scores of years, as "one of the best men God ever made." It is something for the youth of the country, thrown upon toe WOT!
