It is only four and a half miles from this city, and is a very desirable piece of property. Correction. In Monday's Journal an error occurred regarding the baptism in the river. It was Mr. Leavitt and another clergyman, and not Elder Flower, who performed that rite. S? The Chicago Tribune of Monday fills four columns and a half with the account of the Blondes cowhiding Storey, of the Times. The net result is, that the Blondes and Storey are shown to be rather a rough party. New Firm. Attention is directed to the advertisement of Messrs II. T. & J. Ilassler, wholesale and retail confectioners, etc. Making their own cindies, they can guarantee their quality, and invite an inspection'of their stock. TnE Floral Gem. Mcssre. Carmody& Nelson have earned an additional name for their little Gem, by the addition to their exquisite collec tion of flowers, &c, a new infusion of gold fish and other aquatic beauties. Examine the collection of beauties. Their place is on Locust Street, between First and Second. Arkansas Lands. The advertisement of Messrs. Terry & Swepston, of Marion, Ark., is recommended to tho attention cf the readers of the Journal. Mr. Terry was, for some years, a resident of Evansville, and is well known in the city. We recommend t'ae firm to thoso intending to invest in Arkansas lands. Buchanan Troupe. Several cords of baggage, piled at the door of the Opera House, yesterday, announced the arrival of the Buchanan Troupe. This promises well for the wardrobe, and tho opions of the press on Mr. " B., and his supporters have raised high anticipations as to the treat they bring. To-night, they open at the Opera Ilouse. : EXPRES3 Matters. The announcement in a city paper that the American Express Co. had withdrawn its ofScc from Evansville, was premature. Their agent here had orders to do no more business after the 1st; but as the Adams Express Co., were not yet ready to assume the business, the American will continue until they are ready to take their place. m Attempted Burglary. A few nights ago, the office of tho County Clerk was the scene of an attempted ljurglary, while the occupants were at i upper. The thieves pried the north door of the office so far open, as to admit a good sized stick of wood, but the inside bolts were too strong for them. The obket of their designs cannot be conjectured, unless they wasted to steal a breach of promise, or seme other suit, Lyons would be a better place to procure a suit. Recorders Court. The presiding justice was unemployed. Sitting wearily in his chair, with his eyes absently resting on the half empty bot- ' tie of pepper Eauce which has stood upon a shelf in the corner room, since he last lunched iron head-cheese-sandwiches' he soliloquises: " Oh solitude where are the charms That wages have seen in tby lace, Bet.'er dwell In themidst of alartu Than not see a pi issuer's ace," A person who had probably been en rapport with Lira, camo in and swore out a warrant; tjie result of which was a trial for Saturday next.

IRE RELIGIOUS IXrEBKST. UNION MEETINGS. The services at the Trinity Methodist Church, last evening, were under the direction of Rev. S. K. Leavitt. The church was a3 full as on any previous occasion for the past two weeks. The sermon was preached by Rev. Mr. Dodge, cf Iowa, from the text "J hate played the fool, and erred ex ceedingly," 1 San.uel, xxvi 21. It wa3 a most logical effort, appealing to the reason of the hearer, and carrying conviction with it. It was largely illustrated by incidents in the lives of eminent characters who had been forced to make the acknowledgmect Saul made, and which forms the text, exhorting his hearers to fallow the example cited, tho preacher poured forth a powerful appeal to the hearts of the audience. About twenty persons rose for the prayers of the congregation. The usual services concluded, an enquiry meeting followed. The voices of such a large numbeT of children and young people mingling so harmoniously in the hymns, made the music especially inspiring. Lent. The custom of observing the season of Lent, as one of fasting, prayer and humiliation, is cf great an tiquity and undoubtedly of Jewish or igin, and correspond with the Jew ish season of preparation for the year ly expiation. Its duration is forty days deduct icg Sundays this number probably being emblematic of the duration of the delugo and the forty years in the wilderness, forty days being the du ration of tho ancient seasons of re peotance or fasting, and was the num ber which Moses spent on the Mount, Elijah in the wilderness, and the fast of the Saviour. During Lent tho Gloria in Excel ces Deo is omitted in the Catholic church, and the songs of triumph and praise in tho Episcopal. An ciently, no marriages were allowed during Lent, and this is the rule in the Catholic churchstill except by a dispensation. . Lent terminates with Easter Sun day the feast ot the resurrection. The last week being called Holy week, or Passion week, as marking the ar rest, trial, sufferings, crucifixion and sepulture of the Savior. Below are the regulations for the government of Catholics in this Diocese: 1. All the faithful, over twenty-one and under sixty years of aga, are, unless legitimately dispensed, bound to ob serve the Fast of Lent. 2. They are to make only one full meal a day (Sundays excepted) which meal should be taken about noon. 3. Both fish and flesh are not to be used at the same time, even by way of sauce or condiments. 4. A collation is allowed in the evening. No general rule as to the quantity of food permitted at this time is or can be made; but the practice of the most regular Christian is, never to let it exceed the fourth of an ordinary meal. r; 5. General usage has made it lawful to take, in the morning, a cup of tea. coffee, or thin chocolate, made with water, with a small slice of bread or a cracker. G. The use of hogs' lard, instead cf butter, is permitted in preparing fish, vegetables, &c. 7. The following are exempted from the obligation of fasting: Young persons under 21 years of age; those who have completed their sixtieth year; the sick; pregnant women, or those givinc suck to infants; persons who aro obliged to labor hard; and all who, through weakness, can not fast without injury to their health. 8. By dispensation, the use of flesh meat is allowed at any time oa Sundays, 'and once a day on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, except the Saturday of Ember Week, and on the Thursday and Saturday of Holy Week, 9. Persons dispensed from the obligation of fastisg are not bound by the restriction of usiDg meat only at one meal on the days on which its use is granted by dispensation. Tobacco Sales. Ash Wednesday, begins the season of Lcnt.whieh is observed by the Cathol ics, Lutherans and Episcopalians as a season cf fastiDg, self-denial and prayer. Ash Wednesday is so called from the custom cf the primitive christian penitents to express their penitence on that day b7 lying in sack cloth and ashes, or by casting ashes or earth oa their heads in token of their humiliation, and to remind them of their mortality. In the Roman Catholic Church the custom yet prevails of putting ashes on the Leads of the faithful, and as many as can do so usually repair to the church on Ash Wednesday morning, where the pastor imprints on the forehead of such as may present themjelves for the purpose, the sign of the cross in ashes of the evergreens or blessed palms that adorned the church on Palm Sunday of the preceeding year. One Day Earlier. The Bu chanan Troupe will open to night at the Opera Ilouse with Richelieu, be itig enabled to reach here one day earlier than they anticipated. Richelieu is one of the most interesting plays ever put on the stage, and tho character of Richelieu is one of the most subtle and difSoult to personate. It wa3 a favorite character with the late Gustavus V. Brooke, and in it he e: rned much of his bright reputation. From the many and high recommendations of Mr. Buchanan by able dramatic critics, he is probably fully equal to the difficult task and will treat Evansville to such an entertainment as will be well worthy of their patronage. Tobacco Sales. Weldon Bros. & Co , sold yesterday at the Planters, Warehouse, seventeen hhds. Tobacco a3 follows: 6 hhds. common to medium Leaf at from $900 to $1025 ; 7 hhds. common to good lug at from $G25 to $350; 4 hhds. frosted to trashy lugs at from i $450 to fCOO. Tiie Terpsichoreans. This Club held a Mardi Gras party at the house of A. II. Foster, Esq., last night, which was pronounced by those who attended as the most brilliant of the series. The company composed of the of the Club, rather yielding was very largely young people the elder ones the party to them, which opportunity the young people improved to the utmost. One feature was missing, viz: The literary treat that marked the party at Mr. Ford's. The absence of the "Little Joker" was deplored by many. A Card. Kvaksviixe, March 1st, 1870. Editor Journal : Sir You have in this morning's paper, ao article from tho Union headed, "An abusive Driver," and reading a gentleman entered Car No. 5, and tendered the driver a pass signed by the Secretary, whereupon the driver poured fjrth a torrent of abuse on the passanger's head, etc." The latter part of this statement is untrue; when the gentleman showed me the pass, I politely informed him that the Superintendent had instructed the drivers to i?nor, all passes; that under the new rule even the President and officers of the Company paid; and therefore, the gentleman roust deposit hi3 fare in the box. All the abuse was on the part of the gentleman himself. It is also untrue that I said anything disrespectful to any officer of the Company. Yours, &o., Peter McGurIv. MAUKIED.
