Moe.ninoPf.ayer Meeting The Union Prayer Meeting will be held this morning iu Trinity M. E. Church, at 81 o'clock. These meetings are highly enjoyed by all who attend them.
Revival. The protracted meeting in progress at Trinity Church is growing in interest and importance. Last niht there were two conversions at the Altar of Prayer, and eight or ten persons arose for the prayers of the Church. The professors of religion seem to le unusually interested in the work, and the indications are that the revival influence will be widespread in its consequences. Cs?"Note Book3 and Drafts at the Journal Office. Recorder's Court. A. Stark got drunk. A policeman got hold of Statk and introduced him to the Recorder, who said he was acquainted with hiai." Oa investigation, we found thai Sutk had been sent to the leck-up two diys previously for drunkenness, and the Recorder had generously released him. He was fined $0 85, and again went to prison. Cleaning street crossings would le nice exercise for these chaps. County Commissioners. The Board of County Commi-eioners were in session yesterday. The mot important business transacted was the annexation to the city of a certain tract of land lying between Chestnut Street and the canal, and Tenth Street and the Northeastern Enlargement. No other business of interest transpired, and the Board adjourned to meet again this morning. Hogs. Nothing was done at the packing houses yesterday. The season is virtually over, but the pork houses will remain open for a short tini3 longer. If the roads are gaod this week, and the weather favorable, it is thought nearly all the remaining hogs will be brought iato market. Prices continue unchanged. MisrAKE. It appears we were misinformed in regard to the amount that wai taken by the chap who robbed the money-box of Street Car No. 2 on Saturday night. We were told that he got about two dollars, but learned yesterday that he had probably captared net to exceed thirty cents. Tb.2 money is always taken out of the cars late at nigh', just before the last trip, and the only money that is left in the boxe3 is what i received on one trip from the depot to the Salt Well. This accounts for only oae box being broken open. The thief was probably dis gusted with his first attempt, and did not think it through" the worth while to "go oihsr boxesi. The Quintette. We Lani that the sale of reset ve i seats for the Mendelssohn Quintette Club Concert is quite active, end the prospeols are favorable for the largest and most fashionable audietce that ever graced the hall. We lure the assurance of many persons all high authority ia musical circles that nothirg approaching them iu artistic and musical ability has ever appeared iu this part of the country. Their selections are the chef d'ecuvrcs of the best composers, such as Rossini, Alicneif, Schubert, Meyerbeer, Bricealdi, Alard, etc. We anticipate, with great confidence, the iieest musical entertainment ever offered oar eittzens. tT-J Scaling Wax the Journal Ofice. end Wafers at Criminal Court. Green Durham was arraigned for stealing a coat from Moses Wei!, a short time ago. Ho grabbed the coat uud ran, but was detected in the act and captured. Ilia case wa tried before a jury. The jury returned a verdict of guilty, and sentenced him to pay a fine of 55, and be confined in the county jail thirty days. Louis Ebert was tried by a jury, on the charge cf selling liquor on Sanday. He was declared guilty and sentenced to pay a fine of 10 and costs, amounting in the sggrf gate to about $21. ' An indictment was returned by the Grand Jury against Thomas McNair, for grand larceny. McNair stole a horse from Ton Bullen, en Saturday, and sold him in Henderson, where he was arrested, the particulars of which we gave in ycs'erdsy'a Journal. In the evening McNair was arraigned on the charge cf grand larceny. When the indictment was real to him, he said he would not enter a rlea until tho arrival of Mr. Dyer, his lawyer. When Mr. Dyer arrived, he declined to act. McNair then asked the Judge ta appoint an attorney for him, as he had no money to employ one. The Judge then requested Mr. Dyer to defend McNair, to which he assented. After a short consultation with Prosecutor Hargrave, it was agreed that McNair's trial should take place to-day, and a plea of . " not guilty " was entered. The Judge directed the Sheriff to empannel a jury of good men by nine o'clock thi3 morning, and then the Court adjourned. The Weather. The singular weather of the past few days has been (he general tcpic of conversation, in the absence of other subjects o? an interesting character. Oa Sunday tight tho weather was so warm that fires were not needed, and yesterday mornins the change was so great that the ground was frozen hard, and the wind blew keen and cold, A chap who wanted to fay something a little out of the usual style, Ucclared it wa3 tho " uniqucst weather he ever saw." A GREAT FLOOD V 0 M 1 V G . Orcr Fifty Feft at Cincinnati.
Klver tilsin Nine Inches Per Hour. The People Alarmed. We do not desire to alarm people along the river, but wish to warn them that they may prepare for a flood which is imminent. Our river dispatches from Cincinnati, to bo found on this page of the Journal, report the most extraordinary rise on record 10 feet in twenty-four hours, with51 feet, 8 iachea in the channel and rising at the rate of nine inches per hour, or eighteen feet in twenty-four hours. The terrible rain of Sunday night seems to have been general all along the river, and we cannot doubt that we shall have an unprecedented flood. People living within reach of high water, cr having property exposed, should look to it at once. Up to yesterday, such a flood was ucexpected, cr we sbculd have warned our friends sooner of the approaches danger. Oar fiieads cn the Wabash may also anticipate a flood in that classic stream, thcugh we have no positiva news from that region. The M endelssohn . Quintette. We have been called upon by a number cf musical friends, who have had the pleasure of hearing the Mendelssohn Quintette,,' requesting us to urge the lovers of niusio in this city to avail . themselves of an opportunity they may never again enjoy, ol hearing this matchless musical combination. The organization is one of the oldest, perhaps the oldest in the country, and has achieved a fame for pure, artistic music, never, attained by any other combination. Miss Jenny Busk, who accompanies them, is considered the finest soprano in the world, possessing a sweet voice, of greatstreugth and wonderful compass. The ether members of the company are all masters in their profession. Go to tho Opera House on Thursday night, and hear them. Common Pleas Court. la the case of Samuel C. Dixon vs."Jame3 Templeton. brought here from Mt. Vernon on a change cf venue, the jury gave a verdict for plaintiff in the sum of $300. In the ease of the County va. Victor Bisch, the Court sustained the answer made by Chandler and Iglehart for defendant. Judge Parrett asked leave to amend pleading?, and was granted untii Monday next. So far, the defenfo has come out ahead ia this contest. v In the evenicg tho ca?e of John Sch&efter vs. Joseph Stahihcefer, Markctmaster, was taken up and a jary empannelled. This is a suit for false imprisonment. Some time last May the plaintiff used seme blackguard language at (be Uppor Market House during market honr.-, iu the presence et numerous people, and for eo uoin.z was arrested LyStahlheafcr and fnroed over to the Chief of Police, who l eked him up in the city prison for about fifteen minutes. It 13 for this that plaintiff brings action for damages, which ho claims ia the sum cf f'6.000. CjI. Denby appears for the plaintiff, and Shackelford and Parrett for Stahlhoefer. Episcopal Sociable. The sociable meeting of St. Paul's congregation last night, at the residence of Mrs. Harvey, on Secoad Street, was pronounced ihe largest of the season, and we are coafldent that none have passed off mere pleasantly. The guests were elegantly entertained by Mrs. Harvey, assisted by Mrs. Thos. C. Smith, her accomplished daughter. We have not attended a more phasant and social party during the Winter. St. Paul's congregation is leading the van this Winter, so far as the " mite3 " are concerned. These meetings are productive of great good in bringing tho membirs together in the sccicl circle. Nothing is more conducive to genera! harmony and social pleasure than these weekly meetings. There id no "style," like on other occasions, and ll feel that they can meet together in a friendly way, acd whilj away a few hours in the most enjoyable manner possible. We vote the " Weekly So-iable" an exce-llent institution Rev. E. P. Hammond. Ode of our citizens yesterday received a letter from Rev. Mr. Hammond, and we are permitted to copy that pioitioa of it that refers to his proposed visit to our city. He says: " I am fctiil making all my t lats to visit Kvansviile after leaving here, flow soon I shall be able to be with you, will depend on the rapidity with which I recover my wasted energies. I am now much in need of a little re?t. I will write sgain scon." What a Cairo, Pa per Says of E VANSVILLE. 1 1 ia very seldom that wa Ece a favorable notice of Evansville i:i a Cairo paper and we were very much surprised to como across the following ia tho Cairo Bulletin. That paper, in an article heaiad " Encouragement to Manufacturers," re fers ia tho following complimeutiry terni3 to our growing city: The City of Evansvilla is now the leading city of Indiana, boas population ot forty thousand souls. Eighteen years ago it had scarcely risen to the dignity of a respectable village, numbering leos than 4,000 inhabitants. Its growth, ia the interval, rspid and always wealthy, is aacribahie to it3 manufacturing establishments. Foundrymen, furniture leakers, brewers, millers, maehinisti uud niir-.ufacturera of ail kind were encouraged to locate there, and if ths;y wcro short cf fuade. there were tl.ojo who were ready to expend ai helping Laud to taern. The Storm of Sunday Night Bv our diratche3 this morniDg, it
will he seen that the storm of Sun - day night, prevailed over a wide extent of country, and was of the most destructive character. The greatest damage was done ia the direction of Nashville, extending south and north. Betwceu Glasgow and Cave City, Ky., it is said every house was blown down, and twenty lives were lest. Continuity Ceased. The great etorm of Sue Jsy eight prostrated the telegraph lines ia various parts of the country, and our dispatches this morning aro very meagre. The Ohio River Line was badly demoralized, and had not been fully repaired up to dark last night. The Evansville and Wabash Line held out faithful, but east of Indianapolis we had no communication all day yesterday. Oar usual Pittsburg and Cairo di?patches are al?o missing. Yesterday wss a very dull day, so far a; relates to local news of any interest. The city is exceeding quiet, and sensations are sccrce. The various Justices of the Peace had bo cases to demasd their attention, and their offices were as quiet as a pauper's burying ground. The " bruisers " have retired from the fistic arena, and the "bummers" ate disponed to behave themselves, especially during the session of the Grand Jury and the Criminal Court. . A Great Change. At midnight of Sunday, the mercury stood at 4G above zero; at midnight l3t It stood at 20, and was declining, a change of 44 in the fpace of twenty-four hours.
