D'JLL.-1-Local matters of mora than ordinary interest, are exceedingly dull, aad wo have notbicg of an agi . tadve uaturc to lay before our rcad, trj. Basicess in the city is tolerably ' f..;r, but not so brisk in the retail " stoves as ono might suppose Samuel Orr's new building is :raiujlly ; approaching completion. Th3 arches over tho doors have been but up, and from present appearances, v V. : n oomplcted, it will bo a very handjome bu?inC33 liouje, and one v trthyof the enterprising firm that vvill cccupy it. llECQExmr.'a Couet. The Police Court cuts a very email figure now-a-eui. Only ono victim, Matthew Comolly, who had engaged in hi3 iicv Year eclobratioa a little too soon, and therefore got drunlc, was axed t the tuae of $5 25, and in default of the cash, was s:nt to pri-r-c. v 11 ed Ri3 30N3.-r As it is customary i'cr tbe gentlemen to call on tho ladies on New Year's Day, and in order to e.ye trouble and inconvenience, it is the prevailing style, we believe, with those who are "receiving," to hang a red ribbon on the J.'-sr knob, thus giving gentlemen nct'.c-e that they will be welcome, end ::- calls duly appreciated. ' ocit Court. Tho only bust- ; before the Court yesterday, was i' t ial, beforo Judge Baker, of the casj of Neu vs. Fuhs, J. J. Chandler and Frank Allen; and was an action tor ejectment. Tho caso waa bo mixed p.ni complicated that we could not pst tho head or tail of it, and had not " decided when we left the Court Room. The Good os Advertising. As an illustration of what advertising will sometimes do, we were told by a nc-nfhman this week, that by investing cae dollar and sixty cents ia a notic i a tho tbirty-cent column of the Journal, ho mado a splendid trade, iccdviag money to the amount of t'uLr thousand fiva hundred dolhrs To a1! who desire to secure good barcams, good trades, etc., we say, "Go thou and do likewise." Praiseworthy. We omitted to rc?ntij, yesterday, that a gentleman vLo had attended the High School exhibition, was so favorably im pressed with the experiments, and knowing the great need of new appa ratus, g'lnerousjy sent tho class a do-.tioa of ten dollars, and also ;ada a present cf five dollars to Mrs "5 '-.lis Pcrhir.?, for her lecture on f ompoauds cf :iyy"n aad hydro-
'I ha losi tJ Jir. -iiaaoipa iroin lue fire in his pri.itir-sr cGce, over tho Adams Express Office, on Wednesday night, amounted to seven hundred dollars. The room was u-:ed as a store-room for paper only, and the fire wns "onSac l to this room. How it originated is 'a mystery that it is likely will never be solved, although
it is supposed to have been th8 work ofan incendiary. The paper burntd very slowly, othersvis-j a disastrous coc-iRratioa would have ensued. Mr. Rudolph's biock was insured in two asencie?, represented by Hallock and Stackhonse. The loss on the building will net be very large. Before Justice Ejizry. Paul Ruark was tried before Justice Emery yesterday for a?sulting Joseph Ki'tenbacker, (coi Wej. Schuile, as stated yesterday). The plaintiff made affidavit against Ruark charging hira with assault and battery with intent to kill. The cvideuca was clear and positive that Ruark had knocked Kiltenbackcr down with a dray-pin. at tr.e depot, and tLat tho praintiu had not said cr done anything to justify such an attack. Williams ap peared for the pliintiff and Kumler for the defendaLt. Six witnesses testified to the assault, while none testified for the defendant. The Justice, however,, only fined Ruark ?20 and costs, and we think he was exceed ingly lucky in getting oiT so easily. If the case had bien sent to tho Crim inal Court it is very likely he would have farsd much worse. Firemen's Ball. The Fire . Department will give a grand ball this evening, the proceeds to be expended in uniforming tho members. Not lorg since a ball was given for the samo object, and about ono hundred dollars waj realized, but the amount was not sufficient, and a3 the "boys" were so successful, they were recommended by a number of our best citizens to "try agaio." They concluded to act Epon this advice, and wo hope to seo a largo attendance at the National Hall to-niht. A goad supper will bo served by Mr. Seelig, and arrangements have been made in such a manner that all will no doubt greatly enjoy tho occasion. FiaE Below Town. It will b3 remembered that, in last Tuesday's Jotjrnal wo stated that a fire had taken place below town, which we supposed to b3 in thevicinity of tho Stim;on farm. We yesterday learned that tho buildirg wa3 on the Stinson farm,' and it was empty at the time, the former occupant having moved out a fsw days before for fear the house would be burned, an attempt to do si having bceu maic only a short time previous. The house belonged to Christian Von Allman, and was insured ia tho Underwriter's Ageney, represented by Bsnnett & Decker, for $300. Thero is no doubt that the fire was tho work of n incendiary. Two Very Old Ladies. From II. C. Nannie, who lately returned from a trip iu Warrick County, we lcara that tbcra'are two ladies in Grier Township, that aro each over one hundred years old. Mrs. Dolly Ilucnicu't will be 103 years old next March, and has seen tho end of five wars, commencing with tho War of the Revolution, and ending with the great Southern Rebellion. This old lady walks about quite lively, and Mr. Nannie saw her washing tho dishc3. Tho other centenarian is a lady named Thompson, and is 102 years of age, and was. apparently in the enjoyment of excellent health. Accidexts. Mri.Backhulser, who lives ia the country, while oaher way to the city at a very early hour yesterday mornisg, when ntar the railroad crossing on the cemetery road, atd while running to get away from tho track, 3 a train was just passing, tripped and fell, striking on her head and cutting a very ugly and painful wound in her forehead. Miss Mary Esper, who lives at Mrs. Davidson's private boarding house, on the corner of Locust and Second Streets, also met with a Eevero accident by falling into the cellar. She wa3 very badly stuuned, and was insensible for a short time. Postponed. From Deputy U, S. Marshal Sam. Day, who arrived from Indianapolis yesterday at noon, we leara that the caso of Wni. Hedges, for having counterfeit money ia his possession, ha been postponed until the Jilay term of the U. S. Circuit Court. The defendant made affidavit that owing to trials ia" Warrick County, and his inability to secure tho attendance ot witnesses at present, he was not ready for trial His bond was fixed at $2,500, which it is supposed he can readily give. Arrested on Suspicion. We are informed that Joseph Roaey, mato of tho Pink Varble was arrested at Troy, Tuesday evening, on suspicion of being the murderer of the woman and boy, near that city, of which we have made fVequent mention. Wc do not know what grounds exist for this ter rible suspicion. Roney was formerly second mate with Wm. Knight, cn ona of tho Eouisville and Henderson packets, and W33 always esteemed as a good man Removed, By an advertisement elsewhere it will bo seen that the Ohio River Telegraph cfliao has been removed to tho room over Kaba & Wile's candy factory, No. 5 North Water Street, where it is cow pleas antly located ia a spacious and hand somely furnished room. Pleasing Eihl'-SUaa of SplensIIJ Costumes. 51 airiiilloio . x. JlTireiCv A REGAL REPAST. AT-e rtc7 National nail was, hst night, the scene of one of the most brilliant and pleasant social entertainments ever witnessed in this city. Indeed, we ere safe in saying that no assemblage of tho kind ever approached it ia elaborate appointments and real msgnifioer.ee. The assemblage was large. and comprised the very elite of the city, wil.li many beautiful ladies and gallant gentlemen from abroad. Every preparation, both general and individual, was on the most liberal system. The ladies were net only the most beautiful of the city and vicinity, but the elegance and richness of the costumes excelled anything ever before attempted here. Wo do not propose to play "Jenkins," and enter into a minute description of material and stylo of tho many elegant end costly drerscs displayed, tho ornaments worn, or the particular make-up of. each individual. To allude to all would occupy too much time and cpace; to mention a part would be invidious. White was the prevailing color, and tarleton of various qualities the prevailing fabrio. There were, however, several rich e&tias, silks, etc , all generally trimmed with excellent taste, some with almost regal elegance. Costly laoe3 and expensive ribbons were abundant. Tastefully cut overdresses and basques were numerous, and a few elaborate paniers found a place. ... . " The gentlemen vied with tho ladies in real elegance of their apparel, though there was less diversity of style, E3 bhek was the invariable color of pnt3 and coats, with a very gsncral display cf white vests, gushing shirt-bosoms and white kids. All the ladies were beiutiful, of coursesome traascsndeDtly beautiful. Taken altogether, the assemblage of ladies was the handsomest - and "best dressed" that ever graced a hall in Evacsvilie. Henderson, Jessamine County, Ky., and Madison, Ind., lent some of their most beautiful damsels and dames to add brilliancy to tbe occasion. . , The music was conduoted by Henry Hart, onl comprised tea instruments, forming tho most extensive orchestra that has been seen on suoh an ocoision, comprising among its members several distinguished professors. The musio was, of course, of the finest character, and filled the whole building! with its rich melody. Tho scene of mirth and gusniaf joy opened about a quarter after 10 o'clock, and was' kept up during tbe whola night. At 11:30, refreshments wcra announced, and the spacious Euppcr room presented an array of sumptuous luxury that could not be excelled. The supper was prepared and tho tables arrangod by Col. Ed. Wehler, and the arrangement dis played his consummate sagacity and good judgment. Tho viands were of the most dainty character, and of the grcat3st abundance, and the manage ment was of such a character that all were attentively waited on, and there was no crowding or confusion. All were satisfied and well fed. The managers did them3elvo3 in finite credit by the skill and dexterity with which they arranged the sets, and not the slightest jar was felt cr a Eingle harsh or unkindly word heard during the whole entertainment. No plca3anter scene has ever boen wit nessed in tho city, or ono that reflect ed so much credit upon the Rood character of our young men. Evea in the coat-room everything was managed with great ability and skill by the colored gentlemen who had been selected to superintend that department, and coat3 and hats were ever in the right place when wanted. The programmes used on tbe occa sion were unique, and by far the moat recherche ever Ecen in the city, and wero universally admired. They consisted cf a miniature fan composed of four finely enameled French cards, printed and decorated with gold, fastened with a silver eyelet, and hung to tho coat button by a silk cord with a satin tassel of red, white or blue. It is unnecessary to say they wero furnished by the Journal Job Office. The entertainment will long be re membered by all who participated in, or witnessed it, as the most brilliant, fashionable andelegant ball, as well as the most pleasant they ever saw. Summary of Local Events. In to-morrow's Journal we shall pre sent to our readers our regular an nual summary of local events of tho past year, taken from our daily files and made up in a chronological form. It will giva a " bird's eye view," as it were, of the events of the year past, and will be found exceedingly interesting. Those who desire extra copies to send off, can secure all they desiro by leaving their orders at the counting-room. Confirmation. Rt. Rev. Bishop Talbot preached an exceedingly interestiag and powerful sermon at St. Paul's Episcopal Church last night, taking for his theme the compatibility of an active business lifa with religion. After the services the solemn rite cf confirmation was administered by the Bishop to a number of persons. At 7J o'clock this evening, services will bo hel l at the Church of the Holy Ionocuots and a larg. number ! will t confirmed ty the Biihop.

Daring the last 6ix or eight day. Sunday School Festivals have been the rule, and hardly a day or night has passed without some kind cf a school anniversary. The Mission Sunday School of Walatii Strs-t Presbyterian Church held thir holiday Festival at their school room in Lamasco, yesterday afternooo, and all present had a real tiat time. About one hundred and fifty children were present, and the tine passed off in the mosS agreeable manner. Short speeches were made by RT. Mr. Kumler, T. W. Turner, and others, and a good time generally prevailed. The little folks were trated to a rich entertainment of good thing! prepared by the kdlci, and et th close retired to their tomes light-hearted and happy. EAPTIST SUNDAY SCHOOL. The pupils o f this school ra.i ia tho basement cf tLe new Firit Baptut Church, yesterday afternoca, at oca o'clock, to enjoy their holiday anniversary, and th. room waa crowded. The exercises consisted of singing and addresses, and the Rev. Mr, Andres delivered a very inttrestia spteoh to the children, which we did aot arrive in time to hear, but which, w were assured, was highly pleasing and entertaining to tht adirses. An abundanco of goo-l this, Bach as cakes, candies, oranges, etc., whioh had bsen prepared by tho Udies, were given to ths.litllo boys and girls, and the festivities ' closed abont three o'clock, when th erowJ disparsed to thtir homes cumberland presbytbria sunday ; .:::.. school. :. . The Sunday Schcol of the Camberland Presbyterian Churoh, assembled at the churoh last night to celebrate their 'annual festival, and . the exercises were., of an interesting nature. The programme consisted of songf, addresses and recitations. Among tho songs was ona entitled tho "Golden Nine, which 'was beautifully rendered by nine young ladies, wearing white aprons, and each tearing a banner with " The Golden 9 "inscribed upon one side, and on the reverse side each had different mottoes, which wero 3 follows: "Love," "Joy," "Peace," "Long Suffering," "Gentleness," . " Goodnes?," . " Faith," " Witness," and " Temperance." The song "Over There," led by Wm. StortoD, was also suog vory finely. The concluding feature was the distribution of packages of confectioncry, which made glad the hearts of the pupils. It was a very pleasant occasion, and the church was crowded. Amntriueiiti. Opera House. The Metropolitan Star Company, and tho sparkling and dashing comedienne, Miss Kate Putnam, will return from Henderson today, and perform at tho Opera Houso to-night. The attraction will be tho fine play of "Littlo Nell, the Mar chioness," in which character Mis3 Putnam is said tj stand without a rival, although so very youn?. Wo hope to seo a lull hou.-o to-night, and as tho- compmy have e?tabliil.eJ a first clas3 reputation, we believe they will, bo liberally patronized. To morrow night will bo their last performance. In this ccnaectioa wc aro requested by tha lady managers of the Evansville Orphan Aylum to velum their sinoere thank3 to Macajrer Browce and his company for the benoSt to unexpectedly fiiven the Orphan Asylum. Tho benefit was unsolicited, and the ladies feci grateful fer the generous spirit that prompted the action.
