It is estimated tliat an equivalent of twelve tons of bay can bo produced on one acre in roots. , The plan of awarding agricultural periodiotls snd book9 as premiums at agricultural lairs j.3 becoming more common. ... :" It is stated that considerable quantities of wool have been shipped over the Pacific- railroad from Colorado and New Mexico. In a farmer's family neither hair, 12105?, cor leathers need bo procured lor bed?. Soft inside husks, well hetcheled, arc wlnloinc, elastic and durable. ' In the praise the "Norway' oats are receiving it should ba remembered that there are two kinds sold under this name. The one is a black or dark oat, sometimes called the Ramsdell oats; the other is a white oat, claimed to have been imported from Norway. ; . CI A correspondent of tha Courdry Gentleman says that hand friction always rubbing down will certainly keep wind galls from increasing, and if well applied for half an , hour at a time, twice a day, will remove a new one, or materially check one of long standing. .... ' . . ; ; , The. New England Farmer is not inclined , to favor early digsring' of potatoes.' It thinks no place is better adapted to preserve them than the bed in which they grew. "Then they are not crowded, are kept from the light, and arc moist enough to prevent undue evaporation. " i A hundred years ago it was settled that the shortening of the tap of the root of a tree was no injury,, and at the present day some of the most practical of our pear growers cut the tap roots so as to induce the tree to throw out laterial roots, and thu3 save the trees from swaying too much bv hiah winds. P. Pusey, Commissioner of Statistics ' in Minnesota, furnishes some, statistics and estimates as to the crops of thi3 year. JUo put3 the increased area of land in : wheat in Minnesota this year over that of 1SC8 at twenty per cent., and the average yield at eighteen and a half bushe'es. The area he places at a little less than. one million one hundred thousand acics and the yield at a little over twenty million bushels., .', , ..' - -'; HflW Tfl M 4Tv V. KTTTVnT.V.S T. AST. ' Silas Brown says that twenty-five years ago, he dipped finmgies in a large kettle of lime wash-to which salt had been added and the whole kept boiling. A few shingles , were dipped in all over at 8 time, long enouah to soak them well,, and then thrown Aside tn Arv. Tn a short time all the shinales were thug prepared; Al though what are termed "sap shingles," they have lasted twenty five years. and may do so for years to come. Several experiments of" a - similar character have been made sine!, with very successful results. Albany Cultivator. 1 . '. " . : MCLCUING SMALL FRUITS. A member of the Oneida Commu mty, writing on the importance of mulcuing Iruit trees and plants ot every kind, eays that he mulched a row of the Franconia raspberry, and also one of the Philadelpha, side by side. The effect was very marked. While the Franconias which were not mulched wero literally scorched and leaves crumpled in -the sun,' the raw which received the mulshing carried through nearly double the crop of fruit. The material used for mulching was old half-decayed buckwheat straw. . , . - . .' CHOW-CnOW, . ' - Two quarts of green tomatoes. m F 1 a I J. wo quarts oi wane, onions, one dozen green peppers, one dozen reen cucumbers, one largo head of ; cabbaee. chop fine. Season with mus tard and celery seed, to suit the taste. Cover with the best cider vinegar. Boil two h3urs, slowly, continually stirring. A'i soon a3 you take it from the . siove add two tablespoonsful ot" Ealad oU, Cover tight, and keep in a cool plaae. ' - CCRCLTLI03 KEPT OFF BY HOGS. ; In confirmation of the theory that the curculio will not meddle with the fruit on trees standing in a hog-pasture, a correspondent of the Kural New Yorker relates the result of accidental experiment made by him on his farm in Indiana, some years ago. Wishing for a lot to feed his hogs in, he made a fence which - enclosed about one-half of a parcel of twenty plum trees, which blossomed full every year but matured no fruit, as it all fell off before ripe. "That season the trees outside the hog-yard dropped their fruit as usual, while those inside, though tho hogs, almost dug them up bv tho roots, not only , grew well, but were so full of plumai that , tho branch a had to be .propped ud. The next si is-oq the fence was changed so as to take in the trees left out tho year bt lore, and the result was plenty of ripe fruit from all of them lor several years. Others, ho ! said. tried the experiment wuh tho same result. ' - . , , MODES OF FATTENING HOGS. Not a few farmers feed corn in the ear. an some even raw potatoes, to their fattening swine. One half woulJ. probably bean under estimate of tho loss by this easiest but most slovenlr ahd costly practice. A large r umbar mix dry meal with coll water on slops, and immediately feed it to their hogs. The loss in this civ-sc is not so much as in feeding ' the corn unground, but it can not be less than from fifteen to twenty-five rer cent. Stiil others cook their meal with their potatoes. both thoroughly, com pletely mixing the one with the other. and then adding to tno conglomerate water sufficient to make a thick mush, present it to the gratified and hearty eaters, thereby sivmg nearly all tnc fat producing value contained in the grain of tho potatoes. For several years wc have adopted this plan. Everything led -to our hogs, while fattening is cooked, but nothing ground. To one bushel and a halfot potatoes (mashed) we ?.dd three peck3 of dry corn in the ker nel, and then with a liberal supply of water in a kettle almost stcamtight, we cook lor at least three hours The kernels are then three or four times their original size, and the potatoes are mush, and when thoroughly mixed the uisn is as acceptable as can be presented to a lot of fattening hoes. And as every particle ot the food is (or can be) rcduced to a pasfe bv the slightest mastication, much mnrft bv the action of the stomach there can be little if any loss. Hearth and Home. Zatlklel's Prophecies for lSiO. ' Zidkiel" Lieutenant Morrison ha? issued in London bis almanac
predictions for 1870, of which the London Daily News says: "The work is indeed a multum in parvo. ,.ltis suited to the want3and requirements of all ages and stations. Those who have neglected the warnings of the last number had better examine the list of fulfilled predictions at the end of the Almanac, and note how foolish crowned heads have been in not seeing to their nativities in time. The Queen of Spain was
warned that Mars was inimical to her, and soit turned out.. Tho Conservatives in our country were warned that the sun was in Aries, and not having made preparations for the event, they were overthrown. If people defy Sagittarius or Yirgo, and even turn their backs upon - Tauru3 or Leo, what are they to expect? "Zadkiel particularizes in the most courageous manner. J? or example, on the 1st, 6th, 11th, lGth, 20th, 29th, of January, deal with merchants, bankers or clergymen ; begin new un dertakings. On the 5th, 24th, 29th, woo, marry, engage female servants, visit or invite friends, and so on. ' On the -.4th,: 9th, 19th, 23d. deal with farmers and old folk. ': 'Farmers and old folk;' this is a, strange conjunction, and seems somehow- disrespectful to the azmulural interest. In March Victor - Emanuel - (if alive) is likely to be in a bad way. Jupiter, by moving in Taurus, seems well dis posed to Ireland; but Uranu3, by ret rograding in Cancer, brings strange sudden mischief on Holland, nuKM. ouuubu - uiiauujci vu axviiouu, ! ccotland and Manchester. "Both the Prince Imperial and the Prince of Wale3 are exposed to perils in 4 November...
