EVANSVILLE JOURNAL CO. city Tews. Hossa Stolen. A light bay horse was stolen from C. Armstrong, on last Sunday night. County Commissioners. The Commissioners were engaged yesterday in canceling orders. Dull. Business was generally dull yesterday, and locals were few and far! between. Left. John Ingle, Jr., "Esq., left yesterday morning, en route to Europe. i Filled. The hotels were pretty' well filled yesterday, with visitors to the tobacco sale that takes place today. Pabty. George Stockwell, Esq. has moved into his new house, and a grand party was given at his residence 'last night in honor thereof. Still There. Tho Democratic pole still stands at the corner of Third and Locust Streets. Let it be cut down. .City Council. The Council has regular daily sessions as a Board of Equalization. It will bo some time before they will be able to get through, as it h a long and tedious job. Comin'O Back. I. L. Bowlsoa, the best cutter that has ever been in Evansville, has fully recovered his health, and will return from New York on the 1st of August, to take charge of Lyon's custom department again. Did Get Out. We were misinformed in regard to the Kate Simpson habeas corpus case in yesterday's paper, as she was released from the Lock-up by order of Judgo Jone3. The cause assigned, we believe, was that she was in prison over twentyfour hours, without being accorded a trial. We also heard some talk about a suit against the city, or somebody connected with city affairs, for false imprisonment. The Fire ox Monday Night. We have ascertained a few more facts about the buildings that were burned, which belonged to Sebastian Kuhn. The corner building was insured for 0Q0 in the Manhattan Insurance Company of New York, and the inside building, adjoining, was insured for $C0O in the Western Insurance Company of Buffalo. Both of the above Companies are represented in this city by Bennett & Decker. The Courier of yesterday indulged, a3 usual, in " flings " at the Fire Department, and asserts that it was a fearful long while after the alarm was sounded before any water wa3 got on, the fire. Lngine No. 2 was out in as quick time as usual, and is always prompt, and No. 1 would certainly have been on hand promptly, if she had not been taken down in Lainaseo. The Courier also says that after the water had given out in the cistern used by No. 2, that about fifteen minutes elapsed before any water was thrown by any of the engines. The truth of the matter is that a time did elapse, though not over eight minutc3, during which period no water was thrown, but why it was so we do EOt know. As we stated yesterday morning, the great want was hooks and ladders, and without them we are, to a certain extent, completely at the mercy of every fire that visits our city. Recorder's Court. Business before the Recorder was somewhat lively yesterday, but very few stamps were collected. Joseph Giser, for running a theatre on Sunday evening, ai the corner of Eighth and Locust Streets, was fined and costed in the sum of $9 10; and for giving a theatrical exhibition without license, was fined $14 00. Giser took an appeal. Jim Johnson, a colored cuss, for being very drunk and disorderly, was called on to shell out $5 50. Another negro, named Brown, was brought before the Recorder on the charga )f larceny, but the matter was comprotuiaea, and Brown departed. A man named jsl.arion Morgan was arrested on the charga pf vagrancy, but was discharged, as iho c?se would net stick.
BASE Mil,
The Ilafilps In tli3 Field. Pursuant- to previous announcement the grand muffin game of base ball took place yesterday afternoon, and quite a number of persona were attracted to tbc ground t, owing to the novelty of the affair. Ed. Wheeler and Mr. Qaackenbush respectively were chosen to command the opposition forces, and after settling all preliminaries they went at tho game in good earnest, but only played seven innings. Several of the old base ballists were on the grounds, and the game caused considerable sport, especially among the veteran B. B. Fs. Two young men eminently distinguished themselves a3 numbec one "muffins," and there was some talk about having a couple of leather med als made tor them. Another young "muffer" seemcU to hold the opinion that base ball is a cross between "bull pen" and -"town ball," and wanted to cross out the players by throwing the ball, at them. Tsay that he "wasted his sweetness on the desert air" would be almost poetical, but to say that ho did not put any one out by "crossing them out," would bo only stating a most positive fact. However, the boys went out to have some fan, and they evidently enjoyed themselves. Mr. Wymond, the Umpire, held them closely to the rules of the game, although' it was rather a difficult matter.- -' After tho game was over, tho muffins " in council assembled, and unanimously -V : - ': .'Resolved, That the thanks of the muffins are due to the members of tho Evansville Base Ball Ciub. lor their kindness in allowing us tho U3Q of their bats, bases and grounds." Large The biggest sale ot tobacco tua has ever taken place in this city, wil bo made to-day. Martin, Gardner Co. will sell about 27u hogsheads and Welioa Brothers & Co. will offer about twenty-five hogsheads. A gran free lunch, to which all tobacco men are invited, will be spread at 11 J o'clock this morning, at the Nationa Hall, and as soon s.s the lunch is over, the tobacco sale will begin in the hal Contrary to the usual practice here the tobacco will be sold by samp! only, the tobacco having all bet? broken and sampled, and the "headed up" 2gain. Among the tobacco that will be sold to-day, we desire to call particular at tention to the fact that some choice selections of the weed are on th breaks for sale, among which we no tice some extra fine Manufacturic Leaf, Manufacturing and Cigar Fill ler3, fine black wrappers, and som fine ShiDDiDg Leaf, from Ballard Graves and McCracken Counties, i Kentucky. Also, some of the bes Green Riverland Indiana Cutting Lea and rich, heavy Clarksville Lugs and Shipping Leaf. A large number of planters an shippers, principally from Kentucky, are in the city. Largo delegations arrived on the Armada and Ada Lyon and a full delegation wnl probably come up from Henderson, to-day, on tho Mollie Norton. Among the principal tobacco men who are here, we note the following R. J. Daniels, Cromwell, Ky.; Dr. S A. Jackson, Pnradise, Ky. ; J. U Martin, Lewisburgh, Ky.; Mr; Rice of the firm of Early & Rice, from Cumberland River; J. P. Boyd Princeton, Ky.; W. A: Walston, from Tennessee River; Mr. Rothrock South Carrollton, Ky.; R. A. This will be the last large sale o the season, and every buyer and every merchant or citizen in Evans ville, who has taken any interest in the tobacco movement, is expected to be bresent at the sale and - lunch to-day. : . The Cotton Cnor. A gentleman who has lately returned from a trip through Northern Alabama and Middle and Western Tennessee, in forms us that the prospects for a good crop of cotton are very flattering, and the planters feel satisfied that a larger yield than usual will be experienced The cptton trade is a matter in which our people are considerably inter ested. We have already permanently established a tobacco market, and our business men should now take hold of the matter, and make this big cotton market. There is no good reason whv it cannot be done. Tho samo reasons that apply to the to bacco market, will, in a certain way, armlv to a cotton market. We have the money and the disposition on the part of buyers to invest, and the only thing needed is for the cotton market to be taken in hand by men of enerev. in an energetic manner. Let us lose no chances to mako Evans ville a great city, and the commercial metropolis of the State. All pur merchants have to do is to make up their minds that we must have a cotton market, and we will soon have it. Smart. The astute mistake corrector of the "Busy Map" of mistakes, yclept the Courier went for us yesterday because we accidentally located the school house at the corner of Ninth and Division Streets, in Sullivantown. Wo intended to say that a school house had been selected at that point, for the benefit aud convenince of the residents cf Sullivantown. We will wager that the Courier local did not know the difference himself without being informed thereof by somebody. There are a few mistakes that have occurred in the Courier lately that we did not call attention to. One day last week it published a3 a fact that thrco negroes had been sent to the Pest House; one was sent. In another article it stated that Court had been held in Copelh's eigar store, next to tho old Court House building. And, yesterday morning, it gave a list of the officers of the Tobacco Board, and says they were elected on last Monday night, when the fact is, they were elected on the 5th of J uly. We do not consider the above items worthy of note, only that we want to take the " conceit" out of the " great statistician," who has never been to M the lakes." Complaints. Complaints have been made to U3 that the persons whose duty it is to light the lamps on the bridges over Pigeon Creek, neglect their duties about half the time. A great many persons do not like to go through these bridges when they arc dark, as it is considered a dangerous proceeding, as several robberies have been committed at these bridges. We hope the proper authorities will look into the matter. Invited. The many strangers in the city to attend the tobacco sale today, arc cordially invited to call and look through the Journal Steam Printing Establishment. A visit through the different departments of our office will prove interesting. We also do job printing in a style not to be excelled in the West, and at prices so low that we defy competition. Call and see us.
Out Again. We are pleased to announce that Justice Emery is again able to be out, and has secured an office next to J. P. Elliott & Son's Grocery Store, on Third Street. He will be ready for business to-day. The 'Squire has? been laid up just six months.
Drowned. About 121 o'clock this morning, a man named Michael McGuire, while on a spree, fell off the steamer Armada, and was drowned. After falling in the river, he floated until opposite the Mason, about 150 yards below, before he sunk to rise no more. Aft effort wa3 made to rescue him by John Smith, the watchman of the Armada, and one of the deck hands, who got in a yawl and went to his assistance, but the uofortunate man sunk before they got to him. . Cared Fob. At one o'clock thia morning officers Kelley and Huber wheeled a drunk man to the lock-up in a hand wagon.
