We were no little amused yesterday at witnessing the struggles ot an African to carry a bulletin setting forth the magnificent bargains offered by a fa mous Clothing' establishment not many squares fi'om the 'Journal office. The wind was blowing a spank ing breeze, and as it' chapped about, Scipio Africanus. found it a difficult task to keep, the .edge of the sign to the wind. As ho struggled forward, the, wind suddenly caught the broad side of the bulletin, and in a moment Africa and the bulletin were both prone upon the pavement. But the darkey was up again in a moment, and with a perversity characteristic of the race, seemed determined to carry it around the square or die trying. Nerving himself to the task, he again bent forward to the contest, when the naughty wind knocked off his hat and sent it kiting along the street. With desperate earnestness, he pounced upon thq fast flying hat, and drawing" it tightly upon his head, again hoisted sail but the wind caught it en its quarter, and again the intrepid darkey was thrown on his beam ends. Grasping tho staff close by the bulletin, with a desperate effort he succeeded in doubling the street corner; and made his way homo, manifestly of the opinion that it was a bad day for carrying bulletins uuon the street. RUNAWAY. About 9. o'clock yesterday morning, a team of horses attached to a wagon, and belonging to a man named Miller, having bcea left standing unfastened, at the nursery in the upper part of the city, took it in mind to run off, and presently afterwards came dashing down Second Street, at a! frightful rate of speed. They kept straight in the middle of the street, and when' they reached. Main Street the king-bolt bounced out and the hind wheels with the bed," parted company with the fore wheels and the horses, and were left on the corner quietly, while the horses, with the rest of the wagon, dashed furiousy down ; Second Street, and almast ran over a street car coming up, buf, fortunately they turned aside just in time to clear the street car, and kept on their mad career. What became of the horses We are not advised, but the ' probability ' i3 that they went home. ' This is a result of the very reprehensible habit of leaving horses attached to a vehicleithout hitching them, a habit that should be 6trictly interdicted by the city ordinances. Old Boreas Triumphant. The seagulls were rignt tney always ate and the fino "weather of Thurs day was 'only intended to give the mite societies a fair showing. Old Boreas was only getting the rein3 well in hand, and yesterday he took control' in earnest.. The seagulls were again on hand, and darted about over the surface of the river, which was gTadaally being stirred into rouh billows, as if they scented the stormking's wrath, and were rejoicing in the change. During the forenoon the wind, though strong," was not cold, but as it increased in force, it grew colder. T By two o clock the river was in a state of fearful commotion, the waves dashing furiously against the wharf boats, barges, aud other craft, fiiDging their white spray high Into the air. The wind nearly all day came from the southeast, but in the afternoon it veered towards the south, with a fair prospect of getting around to' the north. Signs creaked on their hinges, and some were torn from their fastenings. Thad. P. Gibson's tiu cotton bale was torn loose at one end, and hung beating against the wall. Loose window panes were driven from the sash; bulletin bov.es and boards were hurled prone to the pavement. To vary the phase of the storm, dense black elouds would gather and burst into rain, rendering the. evening ex ceedingly inclement. After dark. the wind rather increased than abated. The wind whistled and shrieked around the eaves, and the wildscrcam of the seagulls pressaged an increase of the storm. The mercury, which at noon ranged at 60, sank to 46 at 8 p. M., and to 40 at midnight. It was, unquestionably, tho roughest day and night of the Winter.

Til? UPK!?4 tiv rersnnnfe maue th;ir.nrt pplaranoe, for several yeara, at the Opera ; House yesterday afternoon, and wer greeted by a bil!y fashion able though not very large audience. At night,, however, despite the inclement. : weather. 'the house was crowded from parquet te to dome, comprising one of the most elegant and fashionable aadiences that ever graced the Opera House. The General looked more mature and manly than when we last saw him eight years ag3, but is not a hair's breadth taller, lie snow ports a handsome moustache and goatee, and time ia beginning to mark, bis brow, but -he possesses all the vivacity of hi3 boyhood days. Commodore Nutt is a little taller than the General, but not so corpulent, and looks smaller every way than the General,' unless they are side by side. Mrs. Tom Thumb is a very pretty, sedate and matronly looking little woman, and Minnie Warren is a very model of a lady in miniature. There Is something peculiarly attractive and pleasing about these little folks, and those who have seen them once, feel a strong desire to see them again. Their entertainment is wonderfully pleasant and amusing. Com. Nutt sings "Captain Jinks of the Army " most charmingly. They give audiences to day at 11 A. M 3 P. M. and 7 at night, thus affording to all an opportunity to see them. Everybody Bhould go," as no' one's education can bo said to be-com-pleted until ho has seen Gen. Tom Thumb." The Cumberland Mite; Tho ladies of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church gave another of their pleasant entertainments last night. The inclemency of the weather and Gen. - Tom Thumb's entertainment bad a tendency to thin out the ranks somewhat. f Still there was a very fair attendance, and everything passed off pleasantly. In consequence of i the slimmer attendance than usual, the ladies will Eet an elegant and sumptuous lunch in the "basement of the Cumberland Church from 10 till 2 o'clock to-day, to which all are invited. .- . . Recorder's Court. A man named Mike Nelson appeared before the Recorder, yesterday, on charge of drunkenness and disorderly conduct. He was taxed in fine and costs $7 25, and was sent to the city prison. A young man, whose name we omit, because there appears to " be some doubt about his being the right person, on charge of stealing some clothing from Joseph Lyon, had a hearing, and was held to bail in the sum of $300, for his appearance at a higher court. His employer went on his bond, and the man was set at liberty. The person referred to ha3 hitherto borne a good name, and it is ruspected that he has been victimized, and that he is not the real thief, though the circumstantial evidence was of a na-' ture, it was thought, to warrant his beiug held to bail.
