WEEKLY REVIEW. Financial. We have no material change to report in our money market. Loans from Hanks can be obt.--.ined only on short bills drawn against shipments to New York or New Orleans Local bills are not taken at all, except in renewal of old paper. Eates of interest remain firm at Hi to 12 per cent. Exchange on New York is in good demand at par, buying; and 1-10 premium, selling. The supply Is equal to the demand. Gold remains weak. The buyiDg rate here is 1 per cent, below the New York quotations. Tbe holiday sea mm always affects the wholesale trade unfavorably, and thejast, week has beeu no exception to the general rule. Country dealers re at borne enjoying the lestivlties, or clcsiDg up tttelr business for the year, and orders are withheld until the beginning of, the n-ew year. Thee.in-floenct-8 "have operated to make up a dull week among our jobbing bouses. Ourmereha ts, however, are profitably occupying the tiine:JP taking account-of' stock and squaring" ftp the i operations of the past twelve months. Considering the steadily declining tendency of prices and the very stringent condition of the money market, the general results of business will be as satisfactory as could be anticipated. The increasing tightness of the money market is having an unfavorable effect upon business operations, leadiug to much caution In purchases and a general retrenchment of stock and expenses, making the demand 'for goods consideraoly lighter than usual. Some nervousness has been obtervable within the past few days in Mtiancial and mercantile circles of th s city, owing to the development of o d embarrassments of a few of our business men, which, to the regret of all. appear to be greater than was hoped they mould be. This, together with some vauue rumors of further troubles, have tended to create a feeling of uneasiness and doubt. But we are glad to be able to assure the public that the business men of Evansville generally are upon a solid foundation, and even though the worst of financial revulsions may overtake the country, will be able to come out with unimpaired credit. Cotton The public sales for the past week amount to 1S1 bales, which brought satislactory prices. The sales were well attended and marked with considerable Bpirit of competition on the part of" bidders. Evansville is rapidly growing in importance as a cotton sales market, and is attracting the attention both of planters acd speculators. We quote the market for middling at 123 13c, and firm at the close. GROCERIES. This department partook of the grand dullness of the week, and the amount of business transacted was not large. There is very little life in the market, and quotations are generally without important change, although we correct our figures be'ow on a number of articles.
